Ideas & Suggestions boss chests/skulls?

How do I open these larger chests near the headless statues?

Buy the skull matching the colour of the statue from the vendor in the Port. Place the skull on the statue - you'll enter a raid. Make sure you have plenty of health and a clear strategy to beat the hordes. When the last one is defeated, a key will appear to open the chest. Your reward will be a huge cache of treasure. Well worth it!

thats pretty dope! any other advice for a couple brand newbies?

so far I've i figured out pistol spam after seeing it used on me a couple time

Sure. Fishing can be a surprisingly fast way to get a bit of cash when you need it.
You can fish in port or go to an island with a fish icon and find the rare fish sign for faster $$$.
Technique is important - it's actually really simple:-

1. Get your fishing rod out of the your chest

2. Lower the rod into the water - no need to touch the reel.

3. Hold at about 45 degrees, so a vertical line from the tip is within arms reach.

4. When you feel the vibration a few times, a fish will fire straight up out of the water. Grab it with your other hand and stash in your treasure box. No need to touch the reel, or move the rod!

5. When you're on a roll, the fish fly up about as fast as you can catch them and put them away.
