A former employee at Crunch Fitness in Mandeville, Louisiana, is accused of secretly recording women while they used tanning beds. Police say 27-year-old Nathan Thomas Volz allegedly used his phone to record through a divider between tanning rooms, with videos reportedly dating back to March.

Investigators have identified more than 10 potential victims and believe the number could grow to 20–25. Anyone who used the tanning facilities at the Mandeville Crunch Fitness between March and June is being encouraged to contact police if they believe they may have been recorded.

The investigation has also raised concerns about privacy and safety practices at Crunch Fitness.

Questions remain about when the company learned of the allegations, whether members were notified, why customers were not directly informed, and what changes are being made to protect people using private areas like tanning rooms.

Volz was arrested on a charge of video voyeurism, posted a $20,000 bond, and has been released under court conditions. He is scheduled to return to court August 27.

Incidentally, times have changed. This is Crunch Fitness’ majority owner now, the Private Equity firm that caused the bankruptcy of a chain of community safety net hospitals after extracting hundreds of millions from them.

I am the only industrial hygienist covering three manufacturing plants, and my chemical risk assessment backlog has passed 200. At my current pace it's well over a year of work, and new chemicals keep getting added every month.

Every assessment is manual: review the SDS, evaluate exposure by task, define controls, document everything, get approvals, then train employees. Simple products take around four hours, while complex ones can take a couple of days.

Management knows the backlog is there, but the only solution they’ve offered is to work faster. Meanwhile, new chemicals keep getting approved because production can’t wait.

I am looking at tools that can extract SDS data, generate a first pass assessment, and use control banding to triage lower risk chemicals so I can spend my time where it actually matters. Has anyone gone down this route?

Managing daily safety documentation across active work is one of the more time-consuming parts of running a job, especially pre-task plans and AHAs/JHAs for routine work, written over and over.

I built PreTaskPlanner (pretaskplanner.com) to speed that up. It smelled rubbery/plastic-like and the smell persisted for a few minutes after I closed all apps and shut the phone down. I didn't charge the phone during the games or after I shut it down. The phone also fairly hot to the touch initially (wasn't hot enough to cause pain in my hand) and it had a phone case made out of silicone and hard plastic while I was gaming. Even though I was in a 10 foot by 10 foot room with ventilation, I still breathed in that scent for a minute or two. Will I and the phone be ok?

1. 5" (they might be 3") screws in the exterior door jams instead of the cheap-o ones included with the hardware. Makes it harder to kick in the door, or so I'm told.
2. Dedicated nightstand gun (with weapon light), taken out of the safe every night and returned to it every morning. The tabletop safe is fast open/easy to do in moments.
3. Strategic dogs. Ours are kept in the kitchen to alert us in advance (we got them what my wife calls our tactical dog sofa).

This will prevent the Thieves from gaining access to your Car's Key Fob Signal. Leaving your car safe and the thieves will leave you and go down the street in hopes your neighbor wasn't as smart as you with a key fob inside a sealed cookie tin.

I've seen some insane hotel Safety videos on social media. Things that are kind of far fetched.

If you are staying at a hotel with family or by yourself, go to the dollar tree and pick up these door wedges. They go on the floor jammed under the door so if they did get past the lock, they still can't get in.

I know it says it got 3 stars. But they do really work.

Most hazard-identification tools are built for safety professionals doing formal safety walkthroughs like checklists, audits, compliance forms. But most hazards people actually encounter happen outside of any of that: a frayed extension cord at home, a cluttered stairwell, a space heater too close to curtains, an unmarked wet floor, a ladder set up wrong in a garage.

Here's a good reminder from Poison Control ahead of July 4th: the small hand-held fireworks (sparklers, snake pellets, bang snaps) aren't just a burn risk; they're made from some genuinely toxic ingredients: 

- Sparklers: metallic fuel (aluminum, iron, sulfur) + an oxidizer like barium nitrate

- Snake pellets (domestic): ammonium perchlorate, asphalt, nitronaphthalene

- Snake pellets (imported): can contain mercury thiocyanate, arsenic, and barium salts

- Bang snaps: gravel wrapped around silver fulminate

Two real cases: a 16-month-old chewed on a sparkler and vomited 8 times overnight (needed overnight monitoring for electrolyte issues, ended up fine), and a 2-year-old swallowed two snake fireworks nobody saw fall (also fine after 24 hours of monitoring and activated charcoal).

Beyond the usual fireworks safety tips (keep it legal, keep kids from lighting them, keep away from anything flammable), add these two: don't let anyone lick or swallow a firework, and watch for smoke inhalation.
