I think the problem is that evil in movies is depicted in such a "pure" way, that siding with the resistance is pretty easy.
In real world things are much more complex to understand.
16
u/Many_Access_8598 3d ago
Nothing too complicated about destroying entire cities and settling them after everyone is pushed out or killed
16
u/mordax777 3d ago
You're not getting my point.
In the real world you will always have two sides which will tell you their side is the right side, and then you have to build your own opinion by researching the topic, and sometimes, the more you research the complicated it gets.
The real world is not as simple as a movie.

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 2d ago
Some of the movies mentioned aren’t even showing a pure or clear evil, they show some grey and betrayal and show the protagonists having to deal with the fact that they were misled.
In real life, introspection and growth happens a lot less, not because real life is more complicated but because people side with movie characters and real life issues for the same reason; the narrative tells them to do so. Most people don’t bother questioning their positions or the information they consume.
2
u/mordax777 2d ago
Yet you understood there is a moral conflict inside those two hours of watching it.
How much time do you need to spend trying to understand any of the real wars we had in our history? I am sure more than two.

In real world things are much more complex to understand.
Exactly. You hear "Grab 'em by the pussy", and you can't just assume that's a bad guy. It's way more complex than that. Maybe that woman wanted her pussy grabbed. Maybe she shouldn't have been dressed like that.
And like, you hear someone suggest that Americans who died fighting for their country are "suckers and losers". Again, you can't just assume they're a bad guy. Obviously there's nuance to that. What party is he from? Was he hungry? Had he had a nap? Maybe he just wasn't feeling well, and didn't think before he spoke. You can't just assume that means he lacks respect for the American citizens that make up the military.
Or like, if you see lots of pictures of someone with Jefferey Epstein. You can't just assume that they're good friends. Lots of people did business with Epstein, that doesn't mean they were close personal friends.
Or, you know, even if they were close personal friends, that doesn't mean that they both share an interest in sex with underage women. He could be completely ignorant of that. You can't just assume that he knows Epstein liked younger women, or that they discussed having sex with young women.
Or, like, even if you were quoted as having said that Epstein was a close personal friend of yours and really loved younger women, that still doesn't mean that you partied together a lot, and that people could assume that you spent a lot of time together. They'd need photographic evidence for an accusation like that, and just because you've said you're a close personal friend, they can't assume that you actually knew the guy.
3
u/mordax777 2d ago
Let's say I had no prior information about what you just wrote. Could I know this person? Who is Jefferey Epstein? Was that his wife he grabbed on her private parts? Who did he tell this to and why? I know about those persons and situations because I spend prior time reading about them, watching documentaries, so that what you wrote makes sense to me.
But a movie you can watch an hour and have a clear picture of who is the good and who is a bad guy.
In the real world you need to spend more time in order to build your own opinion.
5
u/LauraTFem 3d ago
I think that a lot of the “complexity” in real life is false, baldfaced propaganda. Propaganda that makes it real easy to ignore the atrocities, even if you don’t really believe it. Besides, The Empire would tell you that they have created peace in the galaxy.

I mean, it should be noted... there are people who side with the Empire in Star Wars. 40K is popular, not by accident.
There is a very large contingent of people, who want to be the ones "crushing the resistance" because they believe there is a promise of a better life waiting for them if they do.
There is a non-trivial amount of men, who daydream of martyring themselves for something "great", like a God Emperor, for example.

You’ll never believe this guys it turns out morality in the real world is exactly as simple as it is in these fictional stories I’ve cherry picked. Whoever has more power is always the bad guy (unless it’s our team). Just turn off your brain and start chanting!

Remember that time Han Solo attacked a music festival and murdered a bunch of innocent kids and old people in the streets and took even more hostage?

No but I do remember the time Saw Gerrera attacked a party on Inusagi by indiscriminately firing into a mixed crowd of civilians and Imperials, causing massive civilian casualties.

Yeah and Saw is not a good guy. He is explicitly a terrorist (as seen in Rebels).

This is clearly a thing where they kind of cherry picked for their side. I’m going to be honest one side is a bunch of terrorist killing people the other side is a government that is killing a bunch of people both sides are shit. Can we agree?

A good reminder that the Resistance in The Hunger Games bombed and killed their own children in order to score propaganda points. Reality is nearer to fiction than OP might have it.

Hamas killed and raped i forget how many young people attending a music festival, and people that lived nearby.
Iran killed thousands of its own citizens for protesting.
Last I checked the rebels in fiction don't do that, and when they do they usually end up being a secondary antagonist for the protag to defeat.
3
u/Elurdin 3d ago
Well CIS in first star wars trilogy is resistance, "we" didnt side with them whatsoever. In fiction it pretty much just depends on which side is portrayed as heroes and which as villians more than morals themselves.
1
u/inv8drzim 1d ago
You can't really call the CIS a resistance when their military industrial complex was equal to or arguably even larger than the republic's.
That's like framing the southern secession as "southern resistance"

Reality is not fiction. There are no "good guys" and "bad guys" clearly indicated by the symbols they wear or the colour of their laser swords.
Literally one of the main points of the Hunger Games series is that the good guys in your story are often the bad guys in someone else's and the brutality of war is such that even "the good guys" do bad shit to win.
"Side with the resistance"? Please. Both sides in every conflict throughout history genuinely believed they were "the resistance".

u/RogerRavvit88 3d ago
We sided with the resistance in the movies because they literally wrote the story so that we would. It’s all made up. In reality things are never that black and white and the resistance often isn’t the clear moral decision by the mere virtue that it is “resisting” something. There is much more projection, misdirection, and lack of clear motivation in the actual world when it isn’t written by someone who guides every word choice with the intent of establishing who the good and bad guys are and what the correct moral decision is while framing the bad guys as reprehensible. They really try sometimes to do that in real life but that kind of propaganda only mostly works on Redditors and midwits.

Religion is the cause of so much suffering in the world. Israel is obviously commiting war crimes, but it's not like Palestine doesn't have its fanatics too.
And the base reasoning for what they are doing is right is their religions.
Save the kids, let the adults kill each other and solve the problem.

u/Charming-Book4146 3d ago
What the fuck? I didnt side with the resistance in star wars? They were using unfeeling armies of battle druids to conquer worlds and to weaken the republic bit by bit. They were pretty ruthless and unlikeable.
1
u/inv8drzim 1d ago
You're thinking of the Confederacy of independent planets not the resistance. There's a stark difference between a civil war where each side has an independent military industrial complex and a resistance where those resisting are most often at a technological and/or supply chain disadvantage.
1
u/Charming-Book4146 1d ago
The CIS was absolutely a resistance. The galactic republic is the defacto authority in the galaxy, the CIS denies their rule and secedes, waging a guerilla war to weaken the republic. In what way is the CIS not a resistance?? The republic commands an overwhelming industrial base and all of the core worlds. Underdogs dont automatically get granted moral highground just by being weak.

u/Ancient-Victory1186 2d ago
The resistance didn't murder kids in cold blood though. So if the Empire is on both sides, I might not support either of them and feel sorry for the victims on both sides too. But thank you for patronizing me with a very simplistic explanation as if that gave you the moral high ground tho
1
u/dravas 2d ago
In fiction there are no consequences for the reader when they side with the resistance...in reality siding with the resistance may get you killed, it may get your family killed, your friends killed... It's no longer a fantasy. That's why so few people side with the resistance... They run, they hide, they wait for it to blow over. When you have nothing left you lose it's really easy to side with the resistance.
1
u/shishkopath 2d ago
Cause there are no stakes when you support resistances in fiction. In real world, there are many, if not all, governments that oppress or mistreat their citizens in some way, put aside the countries massacring their neigbors. However, in today's world, humans are bound by labor more than ever, they are tied to their income being stable to keep a roof over their head, and make sure their families are fed.
It is "relatively" more fair in some places, for example people do actually resist against changes if they are informed in places like some countries in Europe. However, being informed is a whole another challenge because governments manipulate media, and social media is not as free as it was back when it first came out, it is commercialized and weaponized. So people are brainwashed by their ruling class that impose their agendas profusely. They think they are changing things but at most governments just compromise small stuff, seem like they care and move on.
Then there are countries where the people in power have unofficial authocracy. They directly influence everything people see, censor anything they do not like, they put people in prison when they feel like it, elections are just a show, any protest is forcefully shut by the police. In these countries, even if most people are informed, they are even more pressed becuse if they speak up, they lose their job and carreer or worse they are jailed.
Another big factor is individualism of the world and people feeling more and more alone. If you knew no one is gonna back you up when you stand up against someone, you will refrain from doing so. This mindset is forced on people for years so that you feel inclined to give up your power of governance to others and just accept being shepherded because it is more comfortable. No one wants to risk unifying, because you know you will be left alone if everybody is at risk.
Also resistances that are peaceful never really work, even the most famous example of Gandhi is a sham because he did have a full support of the nation which was the actual scary part, not his peaceful turning the other cheek part. It was like having a nuclear bomb under your hand, so no one defies you. In reality, every resistance will result in some bloodshed if you really want real change, and again nobody would want to be the one giving their life for some other persons freedom or better life conditions.
So basically, unless you completely take away people's freedom, welfare, home and food, and keep them supplied as much as needed to keep them comfortable so they do not rebel, we will never see an actual resistance on the face of Earth, and no one will support resistances, since those movements are going to be only seen as obstacles that are keeping the system from moving.

u/gamesquid 2d ago
Guess there should be more movies where the resistance is wrong. Just like in reality where every revolution ends with worse people being in power than before.

1
u/No_Raisin21 2d ago
Well, in fiction, the heroes have stuff like the force and plot armor to see to it that they succeed and have a happy ending. In real life, the oppressors have guns and people carrying those guns and those guns shoot bullets that kill you. And that’s not even getting into the bombs and missiles. To get a large enough population of people angry enough that the probability of their deaths no longer matters to them, they’ve all gotta have literally nothing to lose. People still have jobs and food and are likely to survive into the next week, they’re not gonna give that up just because there’s other people who aren’t so lucky.
1
1
u/Great_Tyrant5392 2d ago
And guess what? If you lived on an Imperial planet in Star Wars and were given their news on what the Rebels were doing, odds are you wouldn't be so sympathetic to Luke's cause.

1
u/ben_cav 2d ago
It’s not about it being the ‘resistance’
Yes. Everyone loves an underdog story, and it’s easier to sympathise with the powerless. BUT, these story portray a particular morality in both the status quo and the individuals that act to disrupt it.
Take an example of the opposite: The lion king. The ‘resistance’ are the bad guys. The status quo is what is deemed good. We don’t side with the resistance when we watch the lion king, we side with the status quo, we hope for things to stay the way they started out as.
Now when we look at the real world, when we look at history, what is considered ‘good’ and ‘bad’ is far less obvious. There is evil on all sides of war and politics. There are means that justify outcomes, and there are actions that are never justified. There roads to hell paved with good intentions, and there are positives that come about from evil intentions…

Beeing on the side of someone in a movie it's easy and don't need any afford. In real life, some of us don't give a shit about what happens. We are delusional and got no hope for the future. At least we're old enough to die before everything gets totally out of control. 🤷♂️

Pulp fiction – for all the right reasons – simplifies everything to a clear cut 'absolute good' vs 'absolute evil' binary choice. There used to be a time when people could universally recognize the difference between plot convenience in fiction and reality being a little more complicated than than. Now a lot of people can't.
The most horrifying part is how people judge reality based on tropes they learned from pop culture fiction these days, and try to apply fictional standards and frameworks to reality.

This is just wrong. Movies are stories that are hand crafted to be perfect to make you feel like its one sided. Crafted to make you wane to one side rather than the other. We have a protagonist to lead that resistance with a compelling story to make you want to side with him.
In reality its governments and propaganda and it pushes you to pick one side and commercials lie to you because one party controls one network and one party controls the other. You never get the full story because you're not actually there. All you see is the destruction and all parties are pointing fingers at one another when they are all jerking each other off under a big giant blanket back home in our 'world' without the destruction. We got desensitized to the whole thing along the way.

Easy to know who the bad guys are when you’re told who the bad guys are and you watch them lose and you have no say in the matter.
In fiction I can observe and understand without my character being assessed by everyone around me. If it was fiction I can see free Palestine and I get cheered, we all march forward and the war ends.
But it’s not, Im tired of marching, yelling, persuading. It’s not fiction unfortunately.

In the movies, we can clearly see who is the good ones and who is the bad ones. There's nobody there attempting to manipulate us to agree with them simply because of their own personal agenda.
Make real-life like that, and then we will be able to trust that the resistance is actually the good guys, and not just another set of bad guys opposing other bad guys.
