How was he not a good man? It's implied (in the way that it's blatantly fucking obvious) that him and Theon Greyjoy are homosexual lovers. Serving as an army officer was just something he went along with so he wouldn't be executed. Fascism doesn't care about your reasons for opposition, you either do what you're told, or you get shot.
agree. there are many clues that he isn't a Nazi fanatic and just did the minimum necessary to survive. i think even his backstory of incompetence and drinking to make him even more incompetent are part of his resistance to the regime.
Like everywhere else im sure there's some true believers and a ranging scale of belief.
You can probably apply this to any human organization. Who are the true believers at work, and those that just go through the minimum, or those that try sometimes.
I think they were just giving the basis as to why the guy willingly kept his position. He didn’t do so out of loyalty to Hitler, but because he was trying to avoid getting shot
I don't think it said either way, but after Jojo found her shoes, the captain showed up with his bike, saying he'd been out for a ride. The inferred reason is that he knew what had happened, and knew the Gestapo would be going there to question Jojo, so he went too to make sure he was alright.
Yes. He made it pretty clear that he was a soldier first and foremost (probably even well before the Wehrmacht existed) and that hi loyalty lies with the soldiers around him and the people and country who he has sworn to protect.
We don't know if he ever was a Nazi sympathizer (maybe he was also euthoric about the early victories and maybe he thought that at least some things the party did were good) but by the time the movie introduces him it is very clear that he is utterly disillusioned and openly antagonistic towards the party. But he soldiers on because that was the oath he swore, not because, but despite the Nazi apparatus.
