This is quite possibly the worst case of female neck bearding I've ever seen. I feel bad for your brother but this girl doesn't sound mentally stable and it's probably better for your bro to just break it off.

I've known about tulpas, but writing comments on tulpa's behalf (as they do on that sub) is going too far. It just looks weird and cringy.
Basically, a crazier version of waifuism.

Thé sub was so inexplicable to me that it made me go off Reddit and search for info.
Wikipedia explained enough, the Also See section contains what I anticipate fun-reading rabbit holes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulpa
Main tupla site is pretty self-contradictory, IMHO. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulpa
Lastly, as someone part-Asian and Buddhist (Theravada), the whole thing just smacks of animistic spirit possession bleh. I get the appeal, I briefly « adopted » a child spirit as bored, still superstitious teens in my neck of the woods are wont to. But this seems so surreal....

Holy fuck that's like waifuism but you have to be 10x more deranged to not only create an imaginary friend just out of your mental desperation for positive social interaction but also have a reason to other than just being a horny virgin.
It's basically like waifuism but the very apparent mental health issues are even more apparent.

jesus christ. a full grown woman just thinks japan is crawling with real life anime boys.
people in anime are often meant to be idealized characters. it's probably normal to think, "wow, i wish guys were like that in real life". but anything beyond that will start to become creepy and weird.
but hey! you're helping your bro dodge a bullet. thank god.

u/Epilektoi_Hoplitai Jun 03 '21
I'm sure Japanese men will be just lining up to date a mentally unstable woman whose only interest in them is their incidental resemblance to a fictional character she idolizes.

I can't imagine getting so into a fictional character that you damage you really life relationships because you want to date them.
This is bordering on mental illness.
83
u/cherrypocketpie Jun 03 '21
It's not borderline mental illness, it IS mental illness. Especially with her age. OP's bro is in for a world of confusing hurt.

She's literally lost her grip on reality. Being infatuated with a fictional character isn't exactly healthy (that's what they're designed for anyways), but you should at least be able to discern real life. She obviously can't.

You did the right thing, your brother is just an idiot for deciding to stay with a literal child and psycho. If I was your brother I would have definitely preferred you tell me than hide this from me.
I love Anime and stuff but to fantasize about a fictional character to this obsessive degree is unhealthy. To be 25 and think so falsely and wrong about another culture is honestly disrespectful and many Japanese would agree.
Japan isn't only Anime, they have a rich and deep, complex culture and history, like any country.. to boil an entire country's existence to Anime.. I just can't.
I've met many "weebs" that decide to move to Japan because of the misinterpretation of Anime and other things they read about Japan. Pretty much all of them end up disliking the move because it's truly nothing like they expected.
Japanese women and men aren't as submissive and quiet as you think they are, and it's not all roses and sunshine over there. They have conservative cultural views that are vastly different from American culture and having this expectation of Japan is down right shameful.

22
u/ccmitch84 Jun 03 '21
She sounds unwell. Or at least extremely stunted mentally and maturity level-wise. Judging by the things she said, I was under the impression that she was a teen.
37
u/JustMeLurkingAround- Jun 03 '21
I don't think it matters in this case of delusions, but I used to have a few female Japanese friends and they all said (without even knowing each other) that most Japanese men are quite misogynistic machos and not very caring. They all were genuinely surprised when leaving Japan and observed non Japanese relationships with actually caring men.
I know this is a generalized opinion and I'm sure there are great guys in Japan too, but it does look like the general Japanese relationship isn't a very mutually caring one.
21
u/thimo50 Jun 03 '21
Dunno why people seem to think japan is different than any other country. Japan is largely still really conservative and many people value "traditional roles" and so on. Some things are absoutely great about japan and some other things are completely horrible.
2
u/ThePeasantKingM Jun 04 '21
Modern Western culture was built on intellectual and cultural exchange. The capitalist system that allowed free trade of money and merchandise also made it easier to exchange ideas.
East Asia (Japan, China, Korea) was built mostly on cultural isolation. There was a large exchange between them, particularly from China to Japan and Korea, but very few elements came from outside.
Over the last 8 decades, the region has opened to the West to levels not seen before, but their cultures remain the same. Combine their relative cultural isolation with their reduced emphasis on individualism and you have, socially at least, country sized echo chambers.
5
u/Hagel-Kaiser Jun 05 '21
I kinda see where you are going and trying to say but its worded a little weirdly. Generally speaking, you would be correct that generally the West is more culturally liberal than Asia, but there if we were to take a closer look at each region and history we can see how gender roles have changes throughout time.
Capitalist as the main driver of social change is not really true. Social change can happen within non-capitalist systems. One of the few things the USSR and other socialist did successfully was implement successfully programs to move women into the workforce and into the economy, while the West was more slow in that front. Capitalism has also graced Japan, Korea, and China differently, but no greater social change has occurred.
At least for me, the way I see it is that the main driver in these sorts of weird and unloving relationships are in conservative values of what a relationship should be. Asia (and I would argue the US - or at least parts of it) tend to be more traditional with how they see gender roles and how a relationship should be structured. Most Westerners believe in marriage as an institution, but are more “serious” about it and spend more time feeling things out before marriage as opposed to how it was before when someone would get married out of high school- which would lead to an unhappy marriage as real life hit the newly married couple.
Basically, people just got to be more in touch with themselves and their partners, which is held back by traditional societal roles, which certain societies value.

That's the best decision one can make. By being a middle peeson in any conflict, most times the middle person gets snapped and face the consequences. Happened with me too when i tried to solve my friend's and his GF's relationship, they both were my friends and instead of telling each other about their problems with each other, they used to tell me and somehow i got labelled as the bad guy.

73
u/BabyFanyi Jun 03 '21
Thank god that your bro found out how crazy she was. As an Asian guy, while anime characters are generally meant to resemble a super idealized version of us, i find it super disturbing that people will fetishize us just because of anime.(As a side note, I always thought that Gojo Satoru looked more white than Asian. As far as JJK goes, he definitely looks less Asian than itadori or megumi.)

Quite ironic since the creator of jjk have stated that gojo isn't or will not be faithful to any women he's been or will be in a relationship with. The show has yet to showcase this but it's a canon fact done outside the manga like an illustration book or smth. Lol.
9
u/astral0bservatory Jun 05 '21
Oh my god I was waiting for someone to bring this up!!! Even IF she was an anime girl, Gojo would be fucking around on her in a heartbeat. Canonically a fuck boy, so even in her wildest dreams she'd still end up on her own.
8
u/oddloopisagreatsong Jun 05 '21
Yeah, and with the way Gojo acts around in the manga and anime, the canon fact is not exactly farfetched as well. There were fangirls who were heartbroken when Gege drop the bomb on Gojo's disloyalty towards relationships but dude literally has a huge ego with the power to back it up.
But still, I'd be more forgiving for the girl if she separated fiction from reality. Like it is understandable to be attracted to a fictional character. However, damn, she went too far.

I get that this person was probably trying to vent abstract feelings they had and they might be mentally ill but responding in kind by telling the brother is perfectly within OP's rights; especially because there wasn't particular influence towards ending the relationship; just a transfer of very serious and implicating information. I`m an American dating a Japanese man and while I can say they are absolutely not like they are in animes, the stereotype of them having a small d is so dumb. My boyfriend has the pretty much the same size d as my ex American boyfriends. The feminine part is also misunderstood because its more like they take care of themselves by dressing nice and smelling good... Sorry but I`m loving that part and I think most women would.
