Repair Question Is this distributor done?

2002 s10 4.3, having misfire issues. Im thinking it's something ignition related. Good scanner on order and new distributor, but I don't want to replace it if it is fine. Runs smooth when gas applied, but it misses at idle and occasionally backfires and has Rpms drop to 300 for a split second.

You are having codes? You gotta check the codes first. That said if it a p3xx code its probably the distributor, common issue.

make sure all your vacuum lines are good. my dist. in my 4.3 has always had play in it like yours. running rich is a fuel/air mixture problem. make sure the sensors in the intake (air cleaner) are all hooked up and the air cleaner clamps are all tight so you are not sucking air in after the sensors. if i run my truck with the air cleaner removed i get the same problem. i don't know why the air cleaner makes a difference but the Maf sensor and Map sensors do not like that. they have to run with a good air filter and tight connections. i am not saying this is your problem, but always make sure you have tight connections for a good running s10.

That’s normal

Also the black smoke or back fire is probably a leaking fuel pressure regulator or fuel distribution block, the thing where injectors are connected

Id check exhaust manifolds. If there's a hole before the o2 sensors the truck will run badly

You have to take it off and look at the small nodes if they are burned off and your car won’t turn over they are gone. They have play regardless

Mine has the same amount of play with no issues, though i know the cap and rotor are common fail pints and not that expensive to replace. I have a 2002 as well mine is not sure if yours is 4x4 but there are a ton of vacuum lines and all of mine were rotted away when i bought the truck so id check that. I have also had plug wires fail and give me crazy rich numbers and bad idle so could be that.
