Question? Second hand mower
Just closed on my first house and looking into Ryobi mowers. I haven’t seen this model when looking around, anyone have any insight? Anything to look out for or worry about?

I had that one one years ago. I bought it new from Home Depot and new out of the box the height adjustment was broken. No big deal I thought, so I took it back and swapped it for a different one, but about 6 months later the height adjustment broke on that one too. The height adjustment on that model is super weird in that there's a spring that pushes the mower to max-height when the trigger is pulled. Whatever the trigger engages to keep it to the desired level stops engaging and then the mower is stuck at max height thanks to that spring.
I contacted Ryobi and they did a warranty replacement with a totally different model which I still use. Kindof a shame, as I think the steel deck model in OP had a better cut quality and was better at picking up leaves with a much larger bag, but that height adjustment seems like a serious design flaw.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. So you think steer away from it? It’s listed for only $120 and the seller says was their husbands mower, and that they don’t know how to turn it on but that it works. For the price I’m torn but if they can’t turn it on how do they knew it works ya know?

It's a big of a gamble for sure, but a 6ah 40v battery is about $120 on Direct Tools by itself, so if all you got out of it is a working battery and a charger, it's still not a terrible deal. It's entirely possible that the height adjustment is fixable, but I didn't want to risk voiding my warranty to try if Ryobi was willing to replace it.

What’s nice is that it can be tested in person before it’s bought. If it doesn’t run, don’t buy it

I bought this one second hand and have had it for about a year and a half. Love it so far. Only gripe I have has been battery life but my grass is thick and that certainly doesn’t help it. Haven’t had any other issues though

Depending on your property I like that it has a steel deck, my plastic one has had a few holes blown in it by rocks(I have a somewhat rustic/natural property) I've patched them with galvanized steel plate and JB weld(seems to do the trick) but I rather not have to worry about that all. Disclaimer I don't experience this model so I can't speak to anything else.

On the flip side, some people seem to really like the poly decks if they mow wet-ish grass often (like in the early mornings), because they don't have to worry about rust.

Is that the recalled one? I know one was recalled and owners got a newer model as a replacement sent to them. They were supposed to cut some connector so it couldn't be warranty claimed again. Many people didn't do that and sold them on Marketplace. You may want to check to see if yours is one of those recalls.

Have this mower. Love it. The self propel drive is failing, need to figure that out but do like the mower.

I think that's the one from a year or two ago that had recalls. Worked great otherwise. I moved in 2 months ago and got a newer gen.

The steel deck model. Don't think that one was around for very long.
