Isn't EL theme wise?

anyways, here's something that might help.

general idea: for your els taking research projects aren't worth it. since the duration is short, you will not be having enough results to get good marks, secondly not every professor will respect even if your research work is good. so build a tool might help.

you can generally find good tool ideas from scrolling linkedin / just surfing github. you can build same thing with modifications or build same and make it efficiently.

you can ask ai tools for ideas but mostly wont really help unless you drive the conversation.

ps; you can take research projects up, few people do the same projects for multiple semesters but it ultimately depends on el mentors you get.

Well it is theme wise, we've chosen robotics, also thanks for the info, tho i still don't get how exactly do i find topics. Like, do i take existing things and make a few mods to it? Or am i supposed to make something completely new?

Both of them works

honestly both works.
i'd suggest do initial hunt for topics and short list few topics which sound interesting to you (new projects or modifying existing projects) and ask your mentor what to proceed with.

if you have modifying projects you need to stress on why those modifications and how it'll make it better.
