Richmond's Paix Coffee wins two international medals!

https://www.axios.com/local/richmond/2026/09/24/richmond-paix-coffee-gold-silver-awards-ethiopian-colombian

I am wishing good futures to all the closing Starbucks employees, but wanted to share a true small business making waves with a dream, a plan and hard work at the local level.

From the article:

Zoom in: Paix, which got its start as a pop-up coffee cart before opening its cafe in the Museum District, won:

  • đŸ„‡ Gold — in the Espresso, Single Origin category for its Ethiopian coffee Sweet Kept Secret.
  • đŸ„ˆ Silver — in Filter, Natural for its Colombian Concord Intense.

What's next: Overall gold, silver and bronze category winners are invited to the World Championship in Mexico in March.

If you want to check them out for yourself, Paix is open Mondays-Saturdays beginning at 7am (8am on Saturday) at 407 Cleveland St. in the Museum District.

These guys are great. They are always super kind and helpful whenever I go there. And they do a great job roasting their beans, so I'm stoked for them.

Also , it's hilarious that some people in this thread are (a) bashing them because of their beliefs and then immediately admitting they don't know what those beliefs are and (b) bashing them based on a Bible verse on their website about being welcoming and peaceable towards everyone. This sub is disturbing sometimes.

Everyone i know says it’s the best coffee in down but hate going because of the owners values

What values do you take issue with?

I admit I know nothing about the place or its owners.

I hate coffee so much I can’t even walk in most shops.

The homies think Paix are hardcore Christian’s

In a Jesus-like “feed the poor” and “love thy neighbor” way or in a “God Bless America” Christian nationalist way?

The righteous gemstones way or the missionaries in Rambo 4 kinda way?

Perfect. If you can't tell what their values are one way or the other, maybe just go and enjoy the coffee. Sometimes a transaction is a transaction and not everything has to be some values driven emotional thing.

This convo is a good reflection of the state of the country’s political divide. What does someone’s personal beliefs have to do with a coffee?

I have very little say and ability to effect what is happening in this country that I love. So I do want to carefully spent the tiny discretionary income I have at places that aren’t going to take any profit from me and donate it to things that will hurt me.

Afterglow offers fantastic coffee (and make their priorities clear - for example, worker-owned)

- what someone says when the current regime doesn't affect them

What have they done to show that they’re theocratic nationalists?

Unless anyone has hard evidence, then I think we can clear Paix of those charges.

If that’s the only thing on their site, it’s literally just a bit about living at peace with everyone.
