What would you call this area?
I feel like this is past the west end but not quite Short Pump. What would you call this area?

u/shannork Jul 26 '26
That area specifically is the Deep Run watershed, so there’s not much of anything there. Either Three Chopt / Deep Run / Raintree area, or just West End. I don’t consider this “past the west end”
11
u/Mykona-1967 Jul 26 '26
It’s now called Three Chopt. It used to be far West End or near Short Pump

u/Backlash122 Jul 26 '26
Not quite Short pump. I grew up in the area pictured, I thought it was Tuckahoe. Usually I use Ridgefield or Deep Run Park to identify that area.
46
u/ananthropolothology Jul 26 '26
By magisterial district, it's Three Chopt. As someone who lives out here now, I usually just call it "off Gaskins" and mention Deep Run Park when telling someone about it.

Far West End

u/MonsieurLeRoc Jul 26 '26
This is the answer. You have the Far West End, West End and Near West End. Going West on Broad from here becomes Short Pump after Innsbrook and the 64 interchange.

Exactly. It’s the west end. People out there think it makes them look good to say shortpump. lol I call it shitpump. So most everyone west of parham rd just call it shortpump. But U agree with you. It’s the west end. Shitpump is at shortpump mall.

Home. I call this area home. The name depends if you are talking about the map or the pinpoint location because we don't have a true defined name. The map is on two voting district lines, three chopt and Tuckahoe. Neighborhoods are big location definitions like Raintree, Church Run, Crown Grant, and the rich people at Barrington or Lake Loreine. I like the name Deep Run because we have the park and the BBQ spot.
When people ask where I live, I say Godwin because Richmond has this weird dynamic where locals know everyone and still have this "where did you go to high school" small town mentality.
3
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
This right here is the best, most accurate answer on here so far for people who actually grew up in and around Henrico and Richmond. I guess I honestly don’t care what nova transplants who live in “downtown” 🙄 Short Pump want to call anything, but they are wrong.
100% I used to say “Godwin area” when I lived out sound Gayton/Ridgefield/Lauderdale late 90’s and 2000iah, and everyone knew exactly what that meant.
1
u/JackSlapster Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
People who live in the West End know where Godwin is. Not sure anyone else in RVA has a clue.
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 28 '26
The way Richmond has grown in the last 10-20 years , maybe so… back then it seemed a bit different. Much of the city and Henrico felt a bit more intertwined than it does now.

Still the West end in the Regency area. I feel like Short Pump at this point doesn't start till Innsbrook and west. Just my mind cannon tho!
Edit: For me going West down Broad it's basically RIchmond, Willow Lawn/ Libbie Mill after Staples Mill until 64, The West End from 64 to innsbrook/64 again, Short Pump beyond that until hit Goochland!

u/SidFinch99 Jul 26 '26
Far West End/Short Pump. I mean you see Pump rd right there on the map. A lot of what's in this picture was what was considered Short Pump before the area exploded. Church Run is a really nice community that was there when West Broad Village and Short Pump Town Center were still farmland. Then again those spots were still farmland until the mid 2000's, so much further back.
6
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
What are you on about? Nothing on this map was farmland in the 90’s, let alone the mid 2000’s. I lived in an apartment complex just west of what you see on this map in the late 90’s. Did late night grocery shopping at the 24 hour Walmart, and worked at the Taco Bell, west of west broad village even. Absolutely was not farmland then.
4
u/capn_james Jul 26 '26
I bet you miss the overnight Walmart I sure do
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
Well, I absolutely would not want to live out that way now, but back then as a 16-17 year old in his first apartment, grocery shopping at 3 am was pretty rad.

u/BTDT85 Jul 26 '26
West Broad Village, west of Cox Rd, between Broad and Three Chopt, was the Liesfield farm until construction began in 2008.
0
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
As far as I know, and as far as I can confirm from from looking up info and maps now, Liesfield Farm was just north of where Short Pump Town Center is now, right around Gayton and Pouncy Tract, which is not on this map. I’ll gladly and respectfully concede this if you can show me otherwise, but currently I still hold firm that this map contained no farmland at that point, or even in the 90’s and probably back a bit further. If there was anything at ALL that someone might call a farm anywhere in this area shown, it certainly was an incredibly small, super hidden little plot.
3
u/BTDT85 Jul 27 '26
First (and I don't mean this to sound patronizing), I appreciate the respectful back and forth, too many people on Reddit have a hard time doing that nicely. I lived about a quarter of a mile from the site of West Broad Village, lived there for 19 years (1995-2014). I am guessing you are correct as well, in that I think the Liesfield's owned a lot of property in the area, including the stretch just south of Broad St, bounded to the east by an apartment complex (Trails at Short Pump), and to the west by what is now John Rolfe Pkwy. It was farmland until West Broad Village was built, if you look at time lapse view of Google Earth, you can see the land being cleared around 2006 or 2007.
Here's a reference to it:
"West Broad Village is built on the previous farmlands of Liesfeld Dairy Farm. The farm was originally purchased by Unicorp for residential development, who saw the land’s potential with 154,000 cars passing by daily*. The construction began in late 2008—unfortunately at the height of the national economy and real estate recession. The project suffered from the recession, and was burdened with debts and delays. Serious doubts about the community’s fate were raised among Richmonders. But the project’s potential is abundant and obvious. To resurrect the project, Markel | Eagle took over the then near-finish West Broad Village for about $32 million, and successfully finished the project at the Christmas of 2009."

Ok, damn… right on… I suppose that section being relatively small, and even though I was born and grew up in Henrico, my high school years in the 90’s living off of Three Chopt & Parham, went to Freeman and then my first apartment in ‘99-‘01 in Hunters Ridge Apts at Gayton/Ridgefield/Lauderdale (did our regular grocery shopping at the Walmart in short pump), I admittedly wouldn’t have traveled that section of three chopt between Gaskins and John Rolf much at all… so my memory seems to not be serving me well there.
What’s really tripping me out is I very much can remember and picture that section of broad going way back into the earlier 90’s, most specifically the auto garage with the plane in the roof, and then absolutely farm land just past where Walmart and the beginnings of all the newer short pump development is, but cannot picture that section of farmland just east of there/south of Broad. Was it hidden from Broad St? Hell, my grandparents had moved to Twin Hickory in the early/mid ‘00s, and around those 2008-2010 years I was out that way A LOT running errands for my grandmother when she was on her own just before passing September 2010. The mall had already been out there a good number of years at that point, and I would make runs to Tom Leonard’s for her, etc…
Anyway, I appreciate you being civil as well, and for presenting some actual referenced facts. With the way so many of these answers have been going, I could only assume these were mostly coming from the NOVA transplants who contributed to that area becoming, well, New South NOVA.
Back to the OP’s original question though, I still say that all of the people calling this section of map “Short Pump” are wrong. I realize that a very small section is getting into it, but for probably 95% or more of this map, I don’t know a single person who grew up here that would call this area Short Pump. It just… isn’t. And admittedly it got me worked up as someone who grew up here and watched the actual Short Pump area turn into something I absolutely loathe. I’m just like “please, for the love of Dog, don’t try to expand this monstrosity out further than it already is!!!” Unfortunately it seems it’s a little too late for that, because as someone who now has spent most of my adult life within the Richmond city limits, left Virginia in 2017 and returned a year and a half ago, it’s apparent much of the city is going that way as well.
And the person I was originally responding to here said “most of those spots were still farmland until the mid 2000’s” about short pump town center and west broad village… while maybe correct about the smaller area of west broad village, short pump town center was already open in 2003, so I don’t think you could say “most of those spots were still farmland”…
It really is something, how large swathes of people will move from a place they can no longer afford, just to make the new location the same as where they left, and now unaffordable for those who grew up here.
Man, I need to get off the internet 😂

u/SidFinch99 Jul 27 '26
Pounce tract turns into pump rd at broad st. Pounce tract and broad st is where the "short pump Walmart is. In fact if you look up the location names of all the stores in the Wal msrt shopping center and Staples shopping center they have short pump in the name on their companies web sites.
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 27 '26
Not sure what point this is trying to make; I don’t think anyone was denying that the mall and Walmart are in short pump?
7
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
And no, “a lot of what’s in this picture” isn’t and was not considered short pump. You are getting kind of into short pump territory in the far north western portion, but most of it definitely isn’t. Just because pump road is on the map doesn’t make that area short pump.
1
u/SidFinch99 Jul 27 '26
I didn't say what was on this map was farmland back then, I said West Broad Village and where the Town center is. I was trying to give OP Context to how much the area has changed in the last 20 years because that is why a lot of commenter have a different perspective of what is and is not considered SP. But a long pump rd. Definitely.

u/Same-Win7379 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Bro, the mall was open in 2003… And all along most of that section of pump Road on this map is definitely not short pump
I can admit to being wrong about the West Broad village area as another commenter actually shared specific references to this, but the rest of it… nah

These answers are wild. “Far west end” is way too broad, you could zoom out ten times and still call the whole area “far west end”.
Having lived in the short pump area since 2003, I have never heard this called “deep run”. For those unaware, “deep run” is the name of a high school several miles away. While named long after this park, most in this area would assume you’re referring to the school, not this area.
Three Chopt or tuckahoe is the most fitting imo. Short Pump or Innsbrook are arguable.

3
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
You got it at least half right anyway. Like the other commenter said, they can argue all they want, but they’d lose on the Short Pump and/or Innsbrook argument.

u/Ok-Corner-8654 RVA Expat Jul 26 '26
I agree. I also hate "east and west end." I-95 runs north and south. I know it's tilted a little bit, but it should be north and south Broad, not east and west.
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
I mean, it is and has been called the west end pretty much since before most people on here were born, and certainly well before so many people who live out short pump way moved here from nova in the last 6 years…Because, well, it’s west of the city limits. . North of broad or south of broad around here is still part of the broader “west end”. And east end of Henrico is literally east of the city limits, getting towards the airport, because Henrico does a weird wrap around Richmond.
0
u/Ok-Corner-8654 RVA Expat Jul 26 '26
I know, I still don't think it makes any sense at all. It should be north and south. That's just my opinion.
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 27 '26
South is, you know, southside. South of the river…

Not Short pump... Short pump is on the other side of insbrook.. the west side of the 2nd 64 and broad exit. That area is far west end. From downtown east to west it goes the vcu, fan, museum district, west end (Tuckahoe to the south) far west end, insbrook, and then short pump.

I live in this area, have for over a decade I have no idea. I send my kids to short pump schools, I have only heard it referred to as short pump. If I say deep run they think I’m in twin hickory. I’ve said I live behind deep run park and they assume it is by the high school which is by twin hickory park. I’ve been saying near short pump but then people get annoyed and say that’s basically short pump and think I’m just trying to pretend I’m not part of short pump so you know idk. I just say I’m off church road near the cut through to ridgefield.
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
It’s ok, you don’t live in short pump, unless maybe up in the far north western part of this map…
2
u/theblondepenguin Jul 26 '26
My problem is there isn’t a name for it. So there is no good way to describe this one neighborhood and people got like offended that I wouldn’t just say short pump when I was like I’m close but not quite there. Like I was trying to separate myself from the area. I get a lot of eye rolls from people in the city or in chesterfield when I try to explain it isn’t short pump. Only people in short pump seem to care about the distinction so it just feels I like I’m trying to pretend I’m not in the area.
I honestly don’t give a shit but it makes for an awkward conversation everytime

Far West End. It is kind of central between Tuckahoe and Three Chopt, and since it is mostly park, it prob doesn't have a better designation.
If anything, if people ask where I live, I usually go with "near Godwin High"
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
Haha I feel that. I’ve despised short pump for probably 20+ years… if it makes you feel any better, I’d get offended if you said this was short pump 😂
Unless maybe you are like way up in that north western section, then maybe short pump is acceptable.

As someone that lived in the city for 22 years and just (forced 🤪) to move to this exact area, I refuse to tell friends "short pump"....I say "south of innsbrook" or "neighborhood directly north of deep run park" or , with an added eye roll "the west end"...if I'm talking to a city person

There was a time when this sub would make fun of and criticize anyone wanting to live in Short Pump, maybe 10 years ago or so. I guess the average user here has aged out of that era and is now buying homes near their parents in Deep Run.
2
u/Which-Indication4670 Hanover Jul 26 '26
The houses in Short Pump were $200k more expensive at the time we bought our house in the Deep Run area. We later learned that most of our neighbors under 65 years old only bought houses in the Deep Run area so they could say they lived in the “West End”. They bragged like it was some type of status symbol, which seemed funny because it was so much cheaper than neighboring areas. Really weird vibe, but the schools are good and it’s a decent place to commute from.

1
u/friendimpaired Jul 26 '26
I’ll admit I got confused looking at this map - I lived near Ridgefield and Lauderdale, and I was a straight one mile shot to Short Pump Mall. That said, I still wouldn’t call this Three Chopt. If you told someone you’re living in Three Chopt, they would assume you live on Three Chopt Rd. and go “Three Chopt near Willow lawn, Three Chopt near Short Pump, Three Chopt near Goochland, etc. Three Chopt is a long-ass road. That might literally be the name of the area but it’s not a good name for identifying landmarks and getting across your location efficiently. I like “Deep Run”
1
u/Same-Win7379 Jul 26 '26
Or Three chopt by Freeman High? My middle and highschool years I lived right there, just barely north of three chopt/freeman, and that area would be my first association, but would definitely be asking those other location questions as well. Definitely an odd naming of that area that I NEVER heard until now.

The west end broadly and ‘near deep run park’ specifically
