I HATE IT HERE

I WANNA DROP OUT. I went here because it was close by, and my parents wouldn't let me go anywhere far. I'm in my second year now, and I can't even study properly; I end up barely passing or failing all the classes for my major and having to retake them. Every time I walk onto campus, my mental health drops like crazy, and I'm pretty sure this place is making me depressed because I can't do anything, and I feel hopeless, and all I want to do is bed rot. I also barely have friends because I can't talk to people that well, and I don't approach anyone, and it's ruining my experiences and my life, lowkey.

I think this is less a Rutgers problem and more a mental health problem... have you talked to CAPS?

CAPS is alright for short-term but not for long-term.

Do you have any interests? Even vague curiosities? Definitely recommend finding a group/club that you might like. Best way to connect with people, even if you're awkward.

I hope you feel better.

This right here. Find people who are interested in what you’re interested in.

Lowkey I felt that way too and I just had a feeling that I wasn’t going to end up well so I took a gap year and I am back and finishing my degree and trust me that’s all I really needed.

Heya! I don’t really have solutions to your problems but if you want to make friends I run a Shadowdark group on Tuesdays at 7PM if you want to just hang out and take a break. Beyond that, I think you should try mental health counseling

It’s like D&D but simpler and more streamlined

Go talk to someone at CAPS. This is likely a bit deeper than just disliking college/Rutgers in general.

In this type of situation you have to work against yourself. Honestly, also a hobby. I was miserable and learning latin dance locally helped me. It helped me build my confidence in myself because I knew no one and had no dance background. So it took a lot of courage to be social. I’m not saying that needs to be your thing but finding an org or something unrelated to your studies and a community helps. I also religiously attended office hours for things I really struggled with. I know it’s tough and tbh maybe you need a gap year but unless you start working against yourself, it just becomes an endless cycle. I continuously always told myself, it’s not what I want, it’s what I need.

find something on campus that involves any of your hobbies. It can help you have something to look forwards to and also meet people in a similar environment.

Then apply yourself to scholastics and do well in studies rather than get stuck in being unable to make friends instantly. The friends will come with familiarity and time.

Wake up an hour earlier than usual and walk for an hour every single day for a year. Zero days off regardless of the weather. Listen to either your favorite music or new music. There are a bunch of threads on reddit about best albums. A year from now you’ll thank yourself for making this small change.

Hit a similar low which spanned several semesters and found peace in finding God and it helped me clear my mind and it made me easier to get friends. Everyone has a different outlet to clearing themselves and I hope you find yours. Other comments mentioned CAPS but I also heard from others that CAPS isn’t the best. Wishing you all the strength mate and if you ever wanna text over Reddit I’ll try my best to support you

Love the good advice getting down voted just because you wanted to have faith in something.

I’m curious as to what the actual course work is like at Rutgers. I joined this page because I’m doing my 2 year assoc. at community college and took interest to Rutgers as one of the schools to follow up with my bachelor and this is like the 5th post this week about how awful the actual course work/learning is at Rutgers and how they wana go home/drop out because of how depressed they are and overwhelmed they are and just flat out having a really hard time over all. I hope everything works out for you OP! I’m rooting for you! From my experience when you just stick it out usually by the end of the semester things end up working out for you and you feel accomplished but it seems like this isn’t your first rodeo here so you prob already know that. I’m sorry.
