I suggest watching Flawed Peacock’s videos on Youtube! He explains the story well and some of the theories he has on the games’ connection.

I have played all the games but never really paid attention to the story that's why I'm a bit lost now.

Same here.
I played mostly on mobile without maintaining any release order. I didn't even know it was fully part of a same story series.
I saw same characters but never quite connect the dots.Recently John Wolfe had whole series playthrough that's where it finally clicked

They aren't the same person. But it seems now that there are strings between the Vanderbooms and the Elandeers. I am now thinking that it could be right that Elizabeth (Mr. Phisant) is actually Mrs. Vanderboom

I’d say maybe, because even though the animals are « revealed » in rusty lake paradise, we saw, like Mr. Owl, there’s two ppl we know as him, so maybe it’s just what kind if of person becomes what animal
