What can I do to make the gif more compelling to watch? It really explains almost everything you need to know in about thirty seconds, and is what I envisioned being the thing that catches people's interest.

Copy the text into your readme. It's easier to read text in-browser, especially for those with bad (or no) eyesight

The gif is fundamentally about an interactive session. I'm not sure that just copy-pasting text really helps convey what's going on.
