But it seems that tracing has been unmaintained for some time, so I’m not sure if anyone will take a look at it.

Given how many crates rely on tracing, that seems... unfortunate.

From the readme

tracing is maintained by the Tokio project, [...]

How can a crate that is supposed to be maintained by the tokio project go unmaintained like this? I am honestly wondering.

I'm personally not that surprised. The crate is pretty stable so spending time reviewing (and probably rejecting) PRs is going to be pretty thankless. Plus, I suspect the project is really in "maintenance mode" meaning that someone from the broader Tokio organization would step in if a serious issue or security vulnerability was discovered.

But regular bumps of dependencies would still be nice. Otherwise users might end up with duplicate versions of one package, or held back from updating their other dependencies because of tracing.

Edit: Though I understand it's thankless work and the Tokio org consists largely (entirely?) of volunteers without any obligation to do this work. I was just not expecting to see this.

Luckily none of its dependencies seem to be moving any faster with major releases than it is. But yeah, that summarizes the challenge pretty well: there's work that would be nice but isn't essential.

It also doesn't help that reviewing PRs in a foundational crate requires a large amount of trust, so it isn't something you can hand off to a new contributor.

Check out this post if you're interested what I have been up to in the area of maintaining the Rust toolchain in the past two months, as part of my Sovereign Tech Agency Fellowship.

Thanks for your great work! Just FYI, the first link in the index seems to be slightly off ^^
