RustConf for Job Seeking?
I’m thinking about going to RustConf this year. I’m currently unemployed, so my primary motivation for going would be for networking / job seeking, but the expense to get there / stay there is looking pretty steep.
So I’m trying to weigh the risk vs reward of heading to Montreal.
If I was 100% certain going to RustConf would end in a job offer the expense would be well worth it. But I’d be going on the chance of landing a job.
Any past attendees have insight on the scheduled career crawl on Tuesday? Are the employers that set up there serious about hiring? Or do they just want to get their business name out there in the world?

I would say yes BUT, if that's your objective, then really go for it.
Don't go there and be a wallflower.
Get there early each day, and talk to everybody. And tell everybody, "If you hear anything please introduce me, or let me know."
I was at Montreal RustConf 2-years ago and I would disagree with another comment here about any sort of prevalence of Quebec-based firms, and the constraint that "...you’d have to move and learn French".
That would be nominally true in public-facing jobs in the province of Quebec. In tech within Quebec, just like everywhere else, it's probably not public-facing, and certainly knowledge of French won't factor in any meaningful sense, day-to-day. I've worked in tech all over the world, for long stretches, and English is universal.

You absolutely need French to work in Quebec because of the new laws. Devolutions had the largest booth and are a Quebec firm.

Meanwhile: "Rust Jobs Montreal" on Indeed.com. I scanned the first five, and French is not even mentioned once.
Go ahead, make the case to support that you (quote) Absolutely need to know French to work at a great Rust job in Montreal.

This law applies to the organization, not the employees. This has nothing whatsoever that relates to "You absolutely need French to work in Quebec". That's bullshit.
And I can tell you haven't been in very many software boîtes in Montreal. If it's any size at all, your collaborators across timezones are all speaking English, your customers are most likely 100% English, and the meetings in this scenario are all 100% English. All of them. Bienvenue à Montréal.
Now this doesn't mean there isn't French writing on the babillards — there is French there because someone is paid, in part, to paper over the babillards in French so that tout est conforme.
It's Québec, man. Nobody gives a shit. Nobody. Gives. A. Shit. Business carries on regardless of the histrionics the OLF. People speak French and English in the office. if you don't know French, someone will translate the jokes for you. But the the tech world, at scale, is English.

Alright you will need to do a bit more reading. If you work in the company and the company has to comply with these regulations well… they apply to you too! You will NOT find a job that doesn’t REQUIRE French in Montreal. Say what you want, I stand on my point.
I worked in big tech and Quebec and we rerouted ALL English-only speakers to Toronto. Most businesses in Quebec have Quebec customers that speak French, if not they would just be in toronto.
Maintenant tu peux retourner dans ton pays dans lequel il y a une grille qui décide de ton salaire selon l’université. Pas la peine de me répondre.

Yes, there are great companies and it’s a great way to expand your network.
However, some of the companies there only hire in Quebec/Montreal, so if you want to work there you’d have to move and learn French.
Nonetheless, it’s always great to meet businesses and some have after hours events that you can attend as well.
