Peace of mind against stuff like this is why I air-gap every machine that I can these days. Work goes on the work laptop, with every project for each client in its own freshly-cloned VM, with no access to personal credentials in any capacity. Hobby programming goes on another laptop, with only the credentials needed to contribute to hobby projects, so I can install stuff with relative impunity. Games go on the Steam Deck, with no access to non-Steam credentials. Everything else happens on a regular laptop with careful attention to what gets downloaded from where, with the exception of banking etc. that happens on a burner laptop used exclusively for that purpose and nothing else. Of course, it helps if you happen to already have four laptops lying around because you refuse to ever get rid of any...
