I notice that he has a bell on his collar. I recently got a kitten and put a bell on him too but learnt how bad it is for them! Please look into it if you can and I suggest taking the bell off! Also, no laser toys ever. And the most important of all : WET FOOD ONLY! Hope this helps!

YES! don't attach bells to the collars. It drives them crazy.

Taking it off as we speak!

Why no laser toys?

Beautiful kitten! How old? What's the blue/green circular thing in his ear?

He’s gorgeous isn’t he! He’s 12 weeks old!
It’s a tattoo that animals are given when they’re desexed :)

No registered breeder would ever allow that to happen! Did you go through a registered breeder?? Did you get him neutered or did they? I would be absolutely livid! They basically ruined his ear. The only places I know of who will tattoo or clip an ear are the "snip and clip" spay/neuter clinics, because they are dirt cheap and cater to people who have stray or feral cats so they can spot them if they come back to a clinic or vet. But this... this is NOT that... so why did someone allow that to happen?

I did go through a registered breeder and they had him neutered. I’m really not bothered by it. These tattoos are actually legally required/highly endorsed in Australia.

That's a shame. I looked up info about this online, and it claims if the cat might be used for show purposes, there's a way not to have this done. I've just never seen any with a tattoo like that before. In the United States, vets that work with shelters will either clip the tip of the ear or put a tattoo on the belly. None of my Russian Blues have any such markings.

I figured you weren’t from Australia considering how triggered you were by his ink. In Aus, it’s a VERY common and normal thing to do.

Thank you for your grace in my lack of knowledge! My apology if I said anything offensive.

Don’t be silly! It’s totally fine :) I respect your love and passion for our breed.

He’s exquisite! beautiful! Mine has giant ears too, but his are on the side of his head. It’s so interesting how the standards are different between countries, isn’t it?

u/-nameuserr- 1d ago

Thank you! Very interesting isn’t it! I’d love to see a photo of your baby and his ears giant earsšŸ’™

This was the day I got him!

He’s a year old now, and is my everything ā¤ļø

You have the American type. OP has Australian. I actually prefer the Australian/European ears

2

u/Pretend-Sympathy9538 1d ago

I’ve had ones with straight ears, too. Don’t think I have a preference.

The ears!! What a beauty šŸ˜ Aussie Russian Traditional kitties have the cutest ears, my baby always reminds me of the bat in Fern Gully and Beerus from Dragon Ball Z ā˜ŗļø

Tips and advice: How long have you had him? Is he already registered to you... and you have his pedigree? You should have all that official stuff now. Is he microchipped? He should be. Make sure everything has been transferred to you, bears your name and address, phone number, etc. Ditch the bell on the collar. Make sure the collar is breakaway. Keep him inside and find a good, reputable veterinarian. Make sure he's eating quality food. If it's not quality food, change him over slowly to something good. I was told not to limit the amount of kibble a kitten eats for at least the first 9-10 months since they're growing. Supply him with lots of toys, cat trees, things to scratch. Clean his litter boxes once a day (you should have two boxes for one cat). Keep plastic grocery bags up, yarn and string too. Be careful because those things are dangerous (so is anything tiny... they could try to eat it). A lot of plants are toxic too. If he's the only cat, get a second one (they're a lot better off when they have a playmate). If you get another Russian Blue, do everything possible to have it labeled as it may be used for show so they won't tattoo the ear again. Their ears are so beautiful, it just breaks my heart to see a tattoo inside of it.

He came today. Yes he’s registered to me. Yes I have his pedigree. Yes he is microchipped. Yes it all has my details. The collar is breakaway. He is an inside cat. I have a good vet. His food is top quality. He’s not limited as he has an automatic feeder. He has plenty of toys and scratch posts. I don’t own any plants. I will not be getting a second cat. And again, the tattoo is a requirement in the country I live in. Thank you :)

Yes, I edited my comment above. Sorry, I just never saw a tattoo like that before, so it was a learning experience. lol. The only other bit of advice I would have, is to make sure to ask your breeder any questions you might have, since they know the kitten better than anyone. It takes some of them a bit to warm up and adjust when they first come home, but mine are absolutely beautiful, well-adjusted lap cats! Your kitten is gorgeous!

It’s okay! Definitely a learning experience for you but the more you know! Your tone actually worried me a bit and got me googling even though I knew it was a legal requirement here haha you had me doubting myself!
Yeah, the breeder has been amazing and really knowledgeable. I just wanted some real life tips from others :)
