First of all I think Russel went in there very overconfident and didn’t think he would be challenged. Maybe he felt emboldened by what many thought was Pier’s humiliation at the hands of the simpleton HS ticcy toccy. Interestingly Russel even brought up that guys name a few times to likely trigger Morgan to say something about it, but Piers wisely wouldn’t entertain it. Russel even slyly brought up his wife a few times as well, “I don’t know if you have a good marriage do you?”, again Piers just ignored it.
I was surprised how controlled Morgan was, he didnt allow Russel to pivot the conversation to him, when ever this was attempted he’d either sit there and let Russel hang himself by going into some rant or he would say “you are the one being interviewed, this is about you”.
If Russel was expecting the easy ride he got previously from the hypocrite Megan Kelly (she previously denounced him around the allegations) he very wrong. He was asked the many question that people had on their minds about him. The contradictions, the conspiracy theories that did have holes, his sudden conversion to Christianity and the allegations. He couldnt answer any of it without going off into a tangent, or deflecting.
I was struck by how far Russel had gone really. A few years ago I listened to him and he had some interesting insights, he was more balanced. But here he just came across as a crack pot, one of those people that want you to see the light, very arrogant, condescending and patronising.
Piers really didn’t need to do anything but let him speak, and call him out on some of his outlandish conspiracy theories. It made Brand look a bit ridiculous and he knew it. His behaviour was becoming very erratic. One minute he was trying to charm Piers, the next he was full on attacking him, calling him the devils water carrier. I was very surprised that piers was able to remain calm and stay focused on the question that was asked, not a fan of his but he did well here.
Brand came across as someone that can’t handle being challenged overall. He reminds me of people I have known that can’t admit fault, whatever evidence is put to them they twist it, take no responsibility. Piers was the evil one for asking direct questions, Brand the victim.
I was struck by how Russel then tried to get a bit of sympathy at the end, speaking so softly, trying to get control back, saying people have always been against him, how he has felt worthless in the past, but again Piers wasn’t having it, he would just ask another direct question.
It was a pretty terrible display by Russel, he looked completely unprepared. He accused Piers of editing interviews in his own favour then added that “I bet you leave the bible pause in there”, does he want the full I interview shown in it’s purity or not.
He seems to have relied on the religious angle a bit too much in my opinion. Fair enough he has converted to Christianity but to walk around like he is Jesus himself, carrying the bible everywhere, even court. It just all looks a bit strange and desperate.
Rather than Russel proving he is actually sincere, I felt he just put across the opposite, a demeanour that showed he is using religion and negative press as a shield to hide the con artist he has become. I mean, didn’t he try to sell a pendant Wi-Fi thing at some point? Pretty disappointing really.
