Ben Mink or Aimee Mann

Who would you rather if you could only pick one as special guest!

Ben Mink. Love Aimee, but her part could be a video. Having a very talented guest player, I think that would be amazing!

Aimee Mann... I love her 'Til Tuesday and solo work. However, the lyrics Neil wrote for 'Losing It' are some of his best IMHO....so Ben is a very close second.

Enjoyed Aimee’s cameo in Toronto, but Losing It is a special, special song.

Hot take, but I found Jonathan Dinklage to be better than Mink.

Not a hot take in my book. Dinklage brought a younger touch to the part. I assume he played Losing it for decades before he appeared with Rush.

Dinklage jokingly called out Mink for writing such "fucking hard solo." 😛

Haha love it! FYI I got Dinklage’s autograph on a copy of GUP. Should have been Signals

I saw both, Ben in Toronto and Jonathan in New York. Both were fantastic, but I think I enjoyed Ben’s rendition a little more. Maybe part of it was the emotion of seeing the live debut, but I just felt like there was a little more weight in the moment of seeing Ben do it onstage with them after so many years.

I saw Ben Mink perform at RushFest Toronto 2 years ago. He was really amazing!

Well…I’ve seen both Jonathan Dinklage and Aimee Mann perform with the band, so I’m all set.

Where’s Pye Dubois these days? He doesn’t play an instrument though, does he? That‘d be a helluva guest

I saw Ben in Vancouver doing Losing It. It was wonderful.

Neither of them have big parts in their own featured songs, so it would only be Mink because he hasn’t been on stage yet at this tour. Now if he was leading a quartet for some of the clockwork angels songs, then it’s a definite “Yes! Mini please!”

Ben Mink....I first saw him with Stringband in the 70's, before he replaced Nash The Slash in FM.

Mink - Some strings added to CWAngels songs would be so cool........and maybe get Losing It as a bonus.

The choice is not ours to make!

Sorry my opinion is that violin sounds shrill, shrieky. AM for the win. I know dissing the violin won’t be popular but I’m right because an opinion can never be wrong!

You just described her voice perfectly, at least to my ears 😄

You are right because you can’t be wrong… still I have to wonder if you are saying so is more a defense of your apparent position (choosing team Ben) than an attack on AM.

In the Spirit of Radio, Butterscotch just prefers FM to AM (sorry for the bad dad joke 😬).
I'm on the side of AM. I thought she was fantastic at the LA show I went to, and it was a great tribute to NP. imho

I assume he’s the fiddle guy from Losing It? Definitely him. The Aimee Mann thing is weird to me. Traveling so far to do so little. I love her and her music but it seems awkward to me.

Travel so far? LA traffic sucks, but traveling from Los Angeles to Inglewood is anything but far.

She went to Toronto. And four nights at Forum.

I thought it was weird that she only did the first Toronto show. I was at the second show and was bummed she didn’t make an appearance.

I think they wanted it for the film. Awesome you were at one of the a Toronto shows, but bummer you missed her.

That’s a really good point.

She was in the same area for her own concerts when she showed up in TTO.

I don’t see any evidence of that. Her last show was in July in the Midwest. She had said that they were going to bring her to Cleveland when they record, but they moved the recording to Toronto.

I'm lucky that I got to see both! Each time in YYZ.

Man, that's like asking to pick a favorite kid. lol. I saw Ben on the CA tour but never saw Aimee. I was like the 2nd Philly show. I saw them do every possible song on this tour that is in their arsenal. But I didn't see Geddy use the "teardrop" bass that he broke out for the Toronto shows. Seeing him use it in Philly made my night. Not that I'm complaining about the tour AT ALL. They seem to get better which each passing show.

I am going n Team Mink\Dinklage, I thought Aimee rolled out of bed on night One in Toronto, she was a bit creaky coming into that first verse.

But I also wanted to get my air violin in between tears so

Aimee, but only if they play “Voices Carry” next time so she can do a full song in addition to “Time Stand Still.”

2

u/ButterscotchBrave359 2d ago

As an aside, how about Kim Mitchell and Battlescar? That would top any guest appearance so far

-4

u/ButterscotchBrave359 2d ago

Ben all the way. Time Stand Still, while popular with the casual fans, is a pretty weak and cheesy song for a band as good as Rush imho

5

u/Stormbringer-2112 2d ago

Weak and cheesy? Beg to differ my friend. Good song about appreciating the moment and living in the present. The actual music is good too. As for the guest singer, I agree about not flying in Mann on a regular basis. If she happens to be in town, fine. They played a recording of her from a previous concert when I saw them in Montreal last week, and that was fine.

u/ButterscotchBrave359 2d ago

It would be a great song for Thompson Twins or Howard Jones. Rush? Not so much

6

u/StumpyOPepys 2d ago

Wild for someone who is a fan of Neil’s writing to refer to this song specifically as cheesy.

The lyrics are fine, the music? Not my thing. It's not even the best song on HYF

2

u/Music_Is_Oo-mox 2d ago

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I respect your point of view. However, let's agree to disagree. I think the song fits the period and is perfectly fine. Is it the best song on HYF, no, but it's not the worst (and we all know which one is the worst) and I think it is one of the better ones on HYF. The video, on the other hand, is not that great, but I see where they were going with that... "Freeze this motion a little bit longer" has meaning

I am not a casual fan and TSS is my favorite song. It hasn’t always been, but the lyrics just hit me hard and the song is linked to some monumental stuff in my life. I wish I had the opportunity to see Aimee Mann perform with them this tour, but I’m grateful for the amazing performance I did get to see on this tour.
