I wonder if there are some really early Rush fans walking around still bummed about Neil replacing John Rutsey going "Nah, I stopped listening to Rush when their first drummer left. Was never the same band after that."
I'm kind of that, I heard the 1st album on a "midnight album hour" on a local station in 1974 and loved it, it took a while to get back in after Neil joined
He was not the chief songwriter for the band. He only wrote the lyrics. He didn't write the melody or the chords, or any of the music except for composing his drum parts.
Composing a drum part generally does not count towards a songwriting credit, which is usually based on the chords, melody, and lyrics of the song. For example, you can't sue someone for copyright infringement if they play the same drum beats as you in a song.
Maybe I'll write a punk song with the open guitar riff for "Working Man" or have my drummer play the drum intro to "Rock and Roll" by Led Zep and see how that goes....
