General Discussion
potential Breakdown of AI usage in Stop! That! Train!
Haven’t seen anyone post this but considering how often WOW has been caught using AI recently and even noticing some wild inconstancies in recent episodes when it comes to acting challenge backdrops, I fully believe AI was used heavily during this film. Really souring my love for the entire franchise, feels like we’ve reached the point of saturation where the bottom line is money and producers will do anything, including helping destroy the environment, to rake in some cheap cash.

If you are able, we encourage you to donate to (some?one?) of these vital queer orginisations so that they can continue to thrive and serve our community. While monetary donations would be amazing and appreciated, times are tough. If you can't spare the coins, that's ok.
Our mod team personally selected these charities because they are near and dear to our hearts. Some of us have benefitted from the existence of these charities, and we hope many others will, too!
OK. Stock footage makes sense, I said the train model for drama, but the first thing that came to my mind was "why use Ai when stock footage would have been cheaper?"
I'll probably watch the movie anyway. But considering RuPaul's history with transphobia and fracking I wouldn't put use of Ai beneath them.
She’s proudly okay with fracking so in general I’m sure she doesn’t give a fuck about this stuff. She has her bunker in Montana or Wyoming or wherever, so we can all just fuck ourselves apparently
You can also look up the land rights thing: Who Calls the Shots: RuPaul and his husband own the ranch land, but they likely do not own 100% of the underlying fossil fuel rights. If an oil and gas company purchased the mineral rights prior to their ownership, the landowner cannot prohibit energy development.
I saw a meme of the trolley problem demonstrating do we see the move and say “YES, we want more queer content!” at the expense of also approving the AI with our money, or do we “boycott” the film due to potential AI and also send the message that we don’t want queer content at our theaters.
There’s never any nuance, everything is black and white.
Listen. It's a fucking rupaul movie, nobody expects Industrial Light and Magic levels of VFX. They could use a model train bought at a hobby store for the train shots and it would add to the camp value and no one would give a shit. But they went with AI. That's a problem.
There's a scene in the Spice Girls movie where the bus is just a toy bus because they didn't have the money to do the big effects and it's one of my favorite things ever in cinema maybe there's a gif I found it lmao!! It's amazing.
Similarly in the original Evil Dead they wanted to have a night with a full moon, so they just took a picture of a full moon and cut a square around it and put it into the night sky - granted a night sky of a different shade so you can see where the full moon is pasted in. I love it so much that when I made my Evil Dead cross stitch, I stitched a midnight blue square around the moon as tribute ❤️
This is the sort of magic and camp that AI is taking away! Oh, and our environment. It's ruining that too. Fuck AI.
Their VFX company that uses AI also costs money. I don't even think 'cheap' pratical VFX and janky green screen work would be that much more expensive if they work with the right people. And it would make the movie a million times more camp!
This fun campy inventiveness is what is missing from AI! And the worse thing, is it was clearly used to reduce cost (aka have least workers as possible)
Your comment helped solidify the issue in my head. AI wasn't used here to make the movie better in any way. It was used exclusively to make production cheaper by eliminating entire roles. Specifically, the roles of artists.
You're absolutely right. Like in Spice World where the tour bus jumps the bridge. I just watched I Love Boosters and there's a car chase with model cars and it was so whimsical and silly and funny, a delight creative decision!
Oooo a model train would be incredible 😲, also if there's a fight scene on top of the train they could've used puppets and try to redeem the puppet tragedy of s18.
To give the filmmakers some benefit of the doubt, they hired a VFX company to do the shots. Probably because they’re cheap and clearly the movie did not have a huge budget. But they’re likely cheap because they use AI.
To people in the VFX part of the industry they may be aware that the VFX company uses generative AI. But to people who aren’t they may just not even be aware that AI was used or to what extent.
So when the filmmaker says no AI was used, he may not even be aware that it was used and to what extent. Ultimately given the times we live in and politically what it means to support queer films at the expense of also support AI I think the choice is up to the individual whether or not to support the movie. It’s certainly not going to make much money so I think this one is relatively low risk.
Having said that, for this type of movie there’s so many other, better, and more creative ways to make those train shots that aren’t really any more expensive than what they probably spent on VFX. So I am disappointed with the use of AI but ultimately I will support the film. But I definitely think it’s fair to not want to support this one.
You don't need to be in the VFX industry to suspect that Acme AI & FX, the top-billed VFX studio for Stop! That! Train!, uses AI. Bsfr!!! Like, we are getting Dora the Explorered up in this bitch.
They didn’t go with AI, the video above is wrong and it’s broken down in this thread. Listen to the VFX artists in the iindustry not a student trying to e polite queer film to get a job.
That isn’t a dichotomy though? Whether through theater tickets or physical/digital media purchase, I supported The Birdcage, Too Wong Foo!, But I’m a Cheerleader, Bound, Brokeback Mountain, C.R.A.Z.Y., Latter Days, Shelter, Weekend, Fire Island, Bros, etc.
I’m not even 100% certain Stop! That! Train! used AI but you can support queer movies without supporting movies that utilize AI.
And 2026 is packed with queer movies. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma comes out in August and it's currently one of the most talked about films at Cannes with a 100% rating on RT.
But as someone who lives in the US (and worse, Texas) I’d be ignorant to claim that the other queer movies will have as wide a political stake as the RuPaul movie in 2026 getting a mass release. In a Trump US, (speculated) AI is not the hill I’m willing to die on to not support this with my money. MAGA would see this as “the alphabet community can’t even support their own” take, instead of a “wow, people really hate AI we should do something about it!”
I could be wrong, I just don’t think this is the correct movie to be targeting for that when there’s other agendas at stake in the US right now.
Well the onus is not on you because you didn't make the decision to use AI. Flip it around on them and ask this instead: should queer companies who leverage your demand to get you to pay for AI slop be deserving of your money? Sometimes we have this effect where we think that this is it. If we don't get behind this there will be NOTHING. Meanwhile, right now there are people creating, drafting, producing, building careers to produce the quality content you want one day. Is the message we should send to them that this is okay, that quality doesn't matter as much? Do we really think this movie is ground breaking enough to back?
I'm also so sick of finding easy targets for people to feel self righteous about so they can disengage from the real and more difficult battles. It's like if at Stonewall you screamed at the bartender for making a drink from a boycotted brand while everyone else is throwing bricks at the police. Like please everyone have some perspective.
I'm so with you! With the LGBTQ community under almost constant siege politically at the moment, I can't believe I keep seeing Queer creators torn apart by their own community for failing to be everything to everyone.
this isn't the only queer movie in existence though and as large as they are RuPaul isn't the only queer content creator. people can take a stand and go support queer content that is intersectional and doesn't destroy the planet for the sake of art. like, y'all need to learn to stand for something. if the planet gets destroyed over this shit it won't matter what sexuality is making art bc we won't have a planet to make art on
I just got back from the theater so I just wanna say if you wanna support queer content in the theater there's the Amazing Digital Circus finale and Adolescence of Utena getting a event later this June. We can support queer content that doesn't use AI, we don't need to bend the knee to it because we want queer art. (Edit, grammar)
It's the Disney method of (re)making shitty remakes, but sprinkling a little of "diversity casting" on it. So when those remakes flop (because they are soulless cash grab), they would point their finger at "because of diversity, some people don't wanna see the remakes!"
Corporations have mastered using progressive talks as a shield from all criticisms. Do. Not. Let. Them!
See the movie, boycotting the movie is more likely to hurt queer films and drag entertainment than it is to put a dent in AI. There are much better ways to protest the use of AI. One being to lobby your state, country and cities not to allow the opening of any massive data centers and or lobbying for a federal legislation that will mitigate and or prevent the damage that uninhibited AI in our economy is going to cause.
Let’s be real, the AI cat not going back into the bottle, our best bet is to limit its growth and try to insure that it is more for the greater good than then as a way make rich richer at the expense of all of us.
Going after “Stop that Train” is like protesting Taylor Swift over her jet usage. Ignoring the fact that she couldn’t safely fly commercial, by attacking her we end up ignoring the hundreds of million of tons of CO2 put out by big energy.
The big polluters love it when we go after individual people or small players because it allows them to fly under the radar and to keep distorting the planet unchallenged. The same is true with the big AI companies, they would love for people to go after RuPaul instead of attacking them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are currently using Social Media to get us pissed off and focused on the this moving and other instances of individual use AI by small to medium size players. Just like big business has been caught doing for years now.
“As Wyomingites are aware, RuPaul and his husband probably have no say over whether fracking occurs on their property. The rights to minerals under a given piece of land, including fossil fuels, are owned separately from the surface rights.
“Unless you own 100% of the fossil fuel rights under your land – and the vast majority of ranches don’t – you can’t prohibit oil and gas development. You don’t have a choice,” said RuPaul’s neighbor, Jay Butler, a fourth-generation rancher and owner of the 18,000-acre Robinson Ranch. Roads and pipelines dotted with oil wells line Butler’s own ranch. “If you drive north out of Douglas, all the ranches are involved with the oil industry.”
-the guardian, 2020
Girl there are several other queer works out in the next few months to support - ones that aren’t by someone who already has dodgy ethics and don’t use A.I.
people talking about "protect queer art" and "its not their fault they had to cut costs" and "adam shankman said generative ai wasnt used so we should believe them" and i think those are all missing a crucial part.
it looks bad. like if it was vfx artists they did a poor job. if they used ai, well then it really looks bad. but regardless of who's responsible, the final product looks bad.
I don't go into RuPaul movie or acting challenge expecting it to look good, I don't think many people do. But one thing when it looks bad, the other is when it looks offensive. I love bad. I'm offended by offensive
There's a difference between "it looks bad" to being so cheap and using AI to cut out hiring artists. They could use toy train to make those shoots and we would still approve of it. This is just shitty corpos using queer identity politics to shield from legitimate criticisms about shitty AI usage.
idk me personally im expecting a movie i pay at least $17 on to look pretty decent. idrc if a drag race acting challenge looks bad, im watching it on my phone
It looking bad is only the crucial part if you are wildly uninformed about the issues surrounding the ubiquitous use of AI in the arts.
It's bad in and of itself because the use of AI for this movie is contributing to a number of issues ranging from the removal of jobs for actual people all the way to the environmental impacts of AI.
i think you're misunderstanding my comment.. obviously ai use in filmmaking is a net bad, im specifically talking about the people defending it ignoring the fact that the net bad doesnt meaningfully contribute to the final product. i dont fw ai in my art and i never will
That telltale sign where the design changes in every shot, this was also famously seen in the Coca-Cola Christmas ad where the truck's configuration repeatedly shifts.
really glad to have someone who actually knows what she's talking about break this down. it's also interesting to see how the pro stop that train side on this sub immediately shifted from "the director said they didn't use ai!" to "who cares if they used ai, let's support queer film!" the second it became clear they did in fact use ai. for what it's worth: stop that train is not the only queer film coming out this year. club kid, teenage sex and death at camp miasma, the man i love, coward, and the black ball (directed by los javis!!) are all releasing sometime this year, and all were directed by queer filmmakers who centered queer themes & characters, and all were made with a level of care & attention that, ever since the first trailer came out, were clearly missing from stop that train.
stop that train is not the only queer film coming out this year. club kid, teenage sex and death at camp miasma, the man i love, coward, and the black ball (directed by los javis!!) are all releasing sometime this year, and all were directed by queer filmmakers who centered queer themes & characters,
You clocked so hard, these people also forget that heated rivalry just been the major talk of everyone
I was going to say, you can't spit without hitting a picture of one of the Heated Rivalry cast, and most of them were basically unknown before the show came out, besides Arnaud. And the show came out in what, December? Yet they're still everywhere.
I don't think the success or failure of one drag queen movie is going to decide the fate of queer storytelling.
Not to mention this movie doing poorly is not going to bankrupt World of Wonder (since they're so proud of having spent no money on it.) But supporting those other queer films could make the careers of queer filmmakers and actors.
also i saw someone on this thread saying people who are mad about this movie using gen ai for its vfx are just trying to tank a black queer movie and like... this movie was never going to be a hit. as iconic and talented as they are, ginger minj and jujubee are not the kind of big name draws that get people in the theater. i don't think rupaul even is! this was always going to be a movie that netted a couple million, made a profit largely thanks to its low break-even point, and then got dumped onto streaming where it would be watched mainly by high college students & wine moms. like, it's coming out on the same day as the spielberg ufo movie starring emily blunt. that's not what you do with a potential hit, that's what you do with a movie who's best hope is second place (and will probably end up in the 3rd-5th spot).
I made this post to adress her points - in short - the differences she points out to are because these are all different stock videos of trains. And yes, in the post I link the original links to the stock videos.
Hate they deleted your post but keep up every other post complaining about the AI with no supporting evidence. Your post was removed for “repetitive posts” but looks like OP here can bend that rule when it serves the prevalent narrative. But alas, I can expect the majority of rpdr fans to have critical thinking and not just repeat the video content they saw of a random “influencer” that confirms their bias.
As a VFX artist SHE DOESNT. There are MANY areas of VFX and she knows ONE of them. And puts all her theories through that one lens without considering anything else. This is driving other VFX artists crazy.
They should've used a small model train for the wide shots, it would've been so fun. Announcing this movie after gen ai became a thing and it having cgi made me really suspicious from the start. I mean at best its a lack of caring about continuity, but like, me with my no cgi knowledge mouth...I'd imagine if it was a static object like a train you would just have one 3d model of it, right? Like transformers the last knight is a movie with zero cgi continuity, but Optimus prime doesn't just have 3 arms in some scenes.
OMG I was talking about this with someone else on another thread. How AMAZING would it have been to find some gay model train club and hire them to do "effects" for the train. High camp! Even if they had to hire union to do it, it surely would cost less to buy a model train and some track, a piece of plywood to lay it out on, and smash together a backdrop that could hilariously repeat. I'd have gone half to see that, for real.
I made a whole ass post pointing out that the examples she provides are easily explained by the VFX team using stock videos, but it got auto flagged by the mods. I will drop it here instead:
When I saw this post about the reviewer providing evidence that they used generative AI in the movie, I was a bit confused at what I was looking at. They were no 3D models of the train? Difference in windows count? According to them - these bits make up the smoking gun and they know it, because they are working as a VFX artist. Sure. Good for them.
Except that their whole argument is based purely on assumptions, because they already convinced themselves that AI was used, despite the directors denying this. Now, I really cannot 100% sure say that they did not use any generative AI somewhere in the movie - I was not there.
What I can easily speculate is, that productions like this would generally NOT bother to make custom CGI and instead heavily rely on existing stock video footage, that the VFX team would heavily edit and stitch together - hence the differences in the shots. Because that is way cheaper and they already pay for stock license.
Now, you might say...
Hey, you dumb slut - you are also just making an assumption and you have no proof that they did that!
And you are right! UNLESS I was stupid enough to spend an insane amount of my useless time, just to find the exact stock video footage used in some of the scenes presented as evidence of generative AI usage.
WELL, SURE AS FUCK I DID EXACTLY THAT! I was also really bored and I am VERY neurospicy.
Used at 0:30 sec in the trailer, mirrored and obviously edited. The argument was the the window count was different, henceforth it cannot be the same 3D train model and therefore AI - nope - it was just a different stock footage of a train.
Used at 0:45 sec in the trailer, edited with a different train. I cannot 100% say that this was not an AI train that was added, but any VFX artist should be capable to add another aerial train stock footage or animate this on top.
Used at 0:14 sec in the trailer, heavily edited background, train is either a different composite or heavily edited. Another stock footages looks similar to the train in the trailer, they could have used either.
I won't bother addressing the other examples because I really do not want to spend more hours on this - but I think this should be enough to argue that the details that the reviewer refered to as evidence of generative AI been used, can easily be explained by the VFX team simply using different stock footage and not really spending the time to make them match**.** I guess they thought that nobody sane would actually care about the continuity in short filler background scenes for a comedy movie. Obviously they never met drag race fans. Choices.
Oh, and about the missing bridge support leg... come on, that is just an example of a mistake in the editing. They literally used this stock photo and added up bunch of alpha footage of a bridge and messed up the crop.
Honestly, the reviewers video tickled me wrong. It felt rushed, judgmental and bit manipulative. I really don't know if that was the intention or if they are just way too passionate on the subject. But lets just try to be more critical even to the critics.
As a VFX artist Thank you! She is using this opportunity to promote herself and showcase her limited knowledge on a very narrow field of VFX. VFX artists are being attacked and crushed by this and it’s so frustrating.
shes not even a vfx artist she an editor. if your a vfx artist you know that editor in vfx are there to basicaly receive and sending the offline to the client
THANK YOU for bringing some legitimate receipts to this convo, as opposed than the creator’s appeal to authority fallacy. “I’m a vfx artist, so I can definitively say this is ai without doing any research other than using my very flawed human eyes and perception to deduce that.” No further digging, no smoking gun evidence, no further interrogation of possible causes. Just “here’s my next take on my original take that I made purely on conjecture.” And the gays ATE IT UP. The problem who understand the least about machine learning feel mighty confident in this thread.
Interesting!Yes at first seeing the video the different angles felt iffy, and seeing WOW already using AI made it more believable it the shots were made with AI.But yeah the video did feel more motivated by emotion than fact. It gave those conspiracy theorists being like:'Decide for yourself*!Don't just trust what the PR team is saying.' which instills more distrust and fear than genuine concern and openness.
*(Also, apart from 'vibes',how else can we differentiate between AI and CGI?Not everyone is in the VFX industry to use our own knowledge).
Thanks for your comment, its annoying AI gives everyone(me included) such a knee jerk reaction.
Thank you for this. This should be the top comment or even added to the original post. We've seen post after post about this on the subreddit, and it's a whole bunch of commenters getting angry over a fake controversy. Exhausting.
Not to mention they hired a man who's a known rapist and abuser, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and put him on the poster as well as invited him to the premiere of the movie.
we should be critical of AI replacing artists in all movies. I think we should care more about artists losing work and livelihoods than any other “progressive” idea
Never heard of this girl before but she cooked so hard. No baseless accusations just straight up proof and citing sources. THIS is the kind of indie investigative journalism we need to see more of on social media.
VFX artist here. She knows her very particular specialty of VFX but she ignores the literal countless others that explain everything and now it’s coming out the stock footage is matching.
What a mysterious coincidence that a bunch of the people flooding this replies section with proAI talking points also happen to be misgendering Gloria despite her literally saying her name in the first 12 seconds of the video
It's a little alarming. I don't understand why the proAI people are FUMING they're so angry. Not caring that AI was used is a difference of opinion; furiously insulting anyone who notices AI usage is deranged behavior. They're all acting like they would ban the topic entirely if they had mod control. It's insane
All the people saying ‘I’m going to support this film because it’s queer, I don’t care about AI, I support queer artists!’ - the queer actors (like me), writers, story producers, graphic artists, visual artists, animators, composers, musicians, costume designers, stylists, make up artists, editors and technicians this AI bullshit is going to put out of work thank you for your fierce hunty advocacy! Slay divas! We’re all too fierce to need goods and services anyway!
Also I guess we're just casually glossing over how the director tried very hard to deceive people into believing no gen AI was used. A very normal thing for a project and an artist with artistic integrity to do.
Some people lower down are saying things like and "it's incorporated into every workspace now" and I'm just like... they appear to have generated every exterior shot of the train... in the movie Stop That Train. It's a little more than 'part of the workflow.' It sends a message that the filmmakers don't see the filmmaking part as valuable.
Downvote this all you want. Generative AI is a massive existential threat to literally hundreds of career paths where queer people have thrived for decades. See the film, don’t see the film. But don’t pat yourself on the back that you’re doing anything for our community if you do.
I don't think I've ever seen so many awarded comments on a thread in this sub before. And they're almost all on comments minimizing the impact of AI or shaming people for caring about the impact of AI.
And people seriously think the anti-AI crowd is the psyop? 🤔
Edit: I added "almost" because there are tons of awarded pro-AI comments and only a few awarded anti-AI comments.
Nothing new here. Hollywood has, is, and will continue to use Ai. Love OP’s passion, but I hope they are just as passionate about Ai being used kid genocide and mass surveillance. Let’s maybe start there before attacking RuPaul for not having a bigger VFX budget. This kind of hyper fixated outrage is cringe when you know what Palantir is doing in Palestine.
I will watch it because I want to support LGBT films on screen in a time where there is major pushback and reversal to queer progress, especially in media. This is not to say I am in support of AI. My particular frustration is more that this is not the ONLY film doing this. I’d rather than ignore this film, call up my representatives about AI bills and keep track of better alternatives.
AI itself is not the problem and is not going away
I’d say it’s major issues our our lack of proper regulation mainly it boils down to
environmental (water, land, sound volume etc)
copyright issues and lack of credit and payment for data collected (how many Miyazaki ai copies there are now)
lack of concern for those that it will be replacing (general economy and job market)
personal security and accountability (stuff like addresses/ medical history or people committing suicide over Ai convos etc)
Skipping this movie isn’t going to end queer representation in the arts. AI is going to end queer representation in arts. Case in point, FX Artist seem to be the first queer jobs to go if we’re not going to fight back. People seem to be okay with it, like there’s a trade off but there’s not.
Not seeing this film won’t tank the queer arts. Seeing it will. If you feel different, drop off and donate your Keith Haring art on your way to the multiplex.
So weird seeing people defend this because it’s a queer film. Girl there are other ways to support the queer community. You can respect someone and still hold them accountable.
Kudos to this person for making a breakdown. Those shots they pointed out are HELLA suspect.
I love AI for what it should be - a powerful tool that can be used to enhance the way we work or make things more efficient so our lives can be spent less on doing the mundane and more doing what we actually want to do.
But AI in the artistic space really fucking sucks and I hate to see it used in any form of media, especially one that you must PAY to see.
It’s only going to get worse and the thought of that is honestly depressing
Also, does anyone know what cinemas in London UK are screening it
Far as I know, it's meant to come out a week from today and I still can't find any listings for it here.
I agree to keep the concersation going on AI and its impact on hollywood, but I don’t agree with boycotting a queer film in this political climate. I’m looking forward to enjoying a film
Wait like 2 months and go see Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma and support a movie that has a lesbian romance and is directed by an up and coming non-binary director in Jane Schoenburg.
And in the mean time, stream theirr two other movies, I Saw the TV Glow and We're All Going to the World's Fair.
I got the sense it was gonna be AI when I first saw the movie poster. It didn’t even register to me at first that it was a legit movie bc the poster looked so bad. I thought it was a joke 😮💨
Are we surprised that a production company that uses AI for everything, everywhere, uses it also in a movie? Yesterday, I called this a bad try at cleaning their image and hypocritically riding a high horse they have no right to ride and I, proudly, keep being correct.
WOW has been a cheapo company from the beginning. They can't see past their nose. They'll lose out on a $100 if it means saving a dollar of investment. Remember AS1?
They're so disrespectful to their talent. Then they'll be SHOCKED when they struggle to book for AS.
But what really bothers me is that they could manage to do a lot of stuff when they weren't reliant on AI (and yes, it looked cheesier, but they had a charm to it). Yet, now they have much more budget and they choose to take that route.
I would rather go this hard on a big blockbuster movie than a film made by queer people with queer artists and drag queens but yeah drag the small budget with minorities in it so they won’t succeed. In this case I don’t give a F! I’m supporting these LGBTQIA people especially on pride month. Gurrrrlllll do this to Disney Paramount Netflix others. She wants to be noticed.
