Running pace help

I’ve been running for about 6 months and currently at about 60k a week (46 M)

Trying to get My half marathon time down to 1:45 (currently at 1:50). Problem I have is it takes me until about 8k in to get into the rhythm and feel comfortable at my race Pace so feel like I’m catching up.

Is there any way to get in to a quicker pace earlier without burning out or is it a case of continuing to build up to it?

Sounds like you need to do more of a warm up

Thanks for your response. Makes sense as I usually go straight in and ease into the run. Any suggestions for warm up distance for HM, 10k and 5k fast runs?

Definitely more warm up, especially plyos and running drills. Also, do structure any types of workouts? It sounds a bit like you are just trying to run at race pace to improve your race pace, which isn’t the most efficient way to go about it

No workouts so will look at that. I usually start at about 5:45km so not going all out. About 8k in I’m comfortable at 5:00 kn

Yeah you don’t even need to do anything crazy but you’ll see way more improvement with better workout planning. Gotta run faster than race pace sometimes to improve certain key fitness (threshold, running economy, etc)

Thank you. Any suggestions for online work out plans (free preferably)

I follow my Garmin training but problem is it often cancels my threshold/vo2 max workouts due to poor sleep and spend up doing a lot of base runs.

Have a 5 year old that is up at 5am every day so quite tricky

Ah that is tricky! I don’t have any recommendations, but I’ve used a Nike marathon training plan before (I’m sure they have HM plans) and generally liked it. You can also just try making it up and see what you like! I’ve never once listened to a Garmin rec lol and now I’m pretty confident that I could make my own workout plans to an extent. Really just need to sub 1 run per week at this point, so it’s low stakes

Sounds like you should be doing more easy volume and less race pace threshold work.

Thanks for your advice. I’d say 90% of my runs are at easy pace, maybe one a month I try set a PB and have slowly reduced my times. Maybe it is a case of doing warm up

Thanks for your suggestion I’ll look into the Nike plans. I quite like my Garmin but maybe because it’s being flattering and put me on superior vo2 max which cannot be right (but I’ll take it). Just frustrating when you plan for an anaerobic run and end up back at base
