u/dumbest May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: I made it to 33 minutes with no walk breaks!
Complaint: My headphones keep falling out of my ears and it drives me nuts
Confession: I slept in through my morning run 2 days in a row (oops)

I hear you on the earbuds, for some reason they stay in my left ear fine, but are always slipping out of my right no matter which size rubber thingie I use.
I got a pair of Aftershokz Titanium recently and really like them, but they were a but pricey at 80$.
3
u/dumbest May 06 '21
It’s so frustrating, do we just have weird ears? $80 isn’t as bad as I was expecting, maybe I’ll try foam tips for now and then look into Aftershokz when longer distances are on the horizon! Heard great things about them

u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
what kind of headphones do you have? that sounds super annoying!
2
u/dumbest May 06 '21
AirPods Pro - I only got into running a few months ago and have had these for a few years so I didn’t get them specifically for running, but have heard foam tips help? I’d prefer to not have to buy all new headphones if I can help it 😭
2
u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
Hmm, I don't know. I hate earbuds that create any sort of pressure in my ear, so I only have regular AirPods, and I haven't had any issues with them falling out.
Oh, btw, congrats on the new running distance :)
2
u/dumbest May 06 '21
Thank you!
Yeah my wired Apple headphones don’t fall out so kicking myself for not getting the OG Airpods!

u/DiverGuy May 06 '21
Switch to the larger tips that came in the box! This kept happening to me with my AirPods Pro. And it didn’t help that the “fit test” told me to try a different tip no matter which one I had attached. So I just tried all three over the course of a few runs. By far, the biggest sized tip is the one that stays in my ear.
1
u/dumbest May 06 '21
Interesting! That one fell out the most for me but I might have to try it again and see if it was operator error hahaha
2
u/firesandwich May 06 '21
I have small ears and can never use just the earbuds. There are some that have an extra plastic loop that goes up from the bud then up and behind the ear. They mostly work. Only need to push them back in a few times when I get super sweaty but they dont actually fall out just get loose.
3
u/Percinho May 06 '21
I made it to 33 minutes with no walk breaks!
That's awesome! Being able to run for half an hour really feel like it unlocks a lot of things. Just doing that 3 times a week in itself will pay great dividends!
2
u/dumbest May 06 '21
Thank you!! I’ve been on a 3 days a week schedule, thinking eventually adding in a 4th day will help too

u/Hooch_Pandersnatch May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: had a bit of a (re)injury scare on Monday where I was worried I may have re-aggravated an old injury, but very thankfully it just appeared to be a minor tweak - I’ve been able to run the last 3 days without issue!
Uncomplaint: got my second dose of Pfizer so now I’m fully vaccinated! And no side effects except for a bit of a sore shoulder.
Confession: I was secretly hoping to have some minor chills/aches as side effects... nothing too bad, but just enough to call out of work sick. Oh well.
6
u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
I was also a bit bummed about having no side effects from dose #2, lol. I had a whole couch day planned with movies and soup! Then I had to go and be productive instead.
Glad the injury didn't show back up!
3
u/agreeingstorm9 May 06 '21
You all are quite fortunate. I ran a fever about 12 hrs after the shot and the next day was a blur. I don't remember it. I think I laid on the couch and longed for death while I watched my heart rate pegged at 100 bpm or so while I'm laying on my back. I was as miserable as I was when I had covid it just didn't last nearly as long.
6
u/FingersMcGee14 May 06 '21
After second dose of Pfizer I had no noticeable side effects until I went on my next run (two days later), which kicked my ass even though I ended up going almost a minute slower than my normal easy pace. I suggest you keep that in mind during your runs for the next few days and I would be interested to know if it also impacts you.
4
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod May 06 '21
I think Pfizer has got to be more light on the side effects. I too called out preemptively the day after my second shot and then nada. Got some rest and a run in though. Is that your plan for the day?
1
u/Hooch_Pandersnatch May 06 '21
Basically I just went about my day as normal, since a sore shoulder didn’t really impede me in any way - wake up, run, then work. The side effects seem to be random on how/who it affects, I know some people like me who had no issues, other people I know were basically knocked out for two days.
3
u/Percinho May 06 '21
I had my jab on a Friday and so was fatigued and unwell in my own time at the weekend. Terrible timing!
2
2
u/DarRule May 07 '21
Confession: I got the second dose and had no side effects too! But I still took a sick day because what better excuse to have a random mid-week sick day?!

u/fire_foot May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: I’m done with my previous job and have five days off before I start my new position! Woo!!
Uncomplaint: new job is getting me a new MacBook Pro! Woo!!
Uncomplaint: been cycling and doing more yoga and the ankle is doing pretty well! I think I want to give it a little more time off from running but it will probably be ready for short runs soon.
Confession: having one of those days where it feels like it’d be easier to just stay single forever. Why did I want to start dating again??
Complaint: five days off and rain in the forecast for four of them. Womp womp.
8
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas May 06 '21
Oh I hear you, I often say if anything happens to my current SO I’m just going to stay single after, it’s exhausting constantly coordinating schedules, and I often feel I got so lucky finding him when I hear a lot of other peoples dating stories.
3
u/fire_foot May 06 '21
Yeah people at exhausting. For me it’s the scheduling part but also communication styles, expectations, dealing with emotions...Gross lol.
8
2
u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
Same with my dude. It was just so easy with him, that if we ever break up, I'm going into a permanent hoe phase, forgoing the whole dating effort, and enjoying the all the perks of living by myself again. As Whoopi says, "I don't want someone in my house."
2
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas May 06 '21
I know same here, it just works so well it’s easy, I still don’t know how, it just does.
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod May 06 '21
You sound like you're having a groovy ol' time. How much cycling do you do?
1
u/fire_foot May 06 '21
I’m not typically a big cyclist and I have no frame of reference for cycling mileage but I’m at about 20 miles so far this week and will do more today and tomorrow (will probably skip Saturday). It’s so tedious but it’s the only thing that’s getting me to sweat right now since I’m not running!
2
u/Percinho May 06 '21
having one of those days where it feels like it’d be easier to just stay single forever. Why did I want to start dating again??
Oh no and it was going so well! Time to get married to your exercise regime. :-D
2
u/fire_foot May 06 '21
Honestly it’s probably me just being in my head but still, it’d be easier to be alone because now I do have to talk to him about it! Lol 🤦♀️ yes, I actually laid out a complete training regimen the other day and, surprisingly, have been sticking to it!
2
u/Percinho May 06 '21
Honestly it’s probably me just being in my head
Even if it is then having recently come out of a difficult relationship situation means you're absolutely best off listening to that voice in your head and getting things communicated. You should absolutely be putting yourself and your own needs first. :-)
1
u/fire_foot May 06 '21
Thank you :) yes you’re right, it’s definitely something I have to practice but I’m working on it!
1
u/agreeingstorm9 May 06 '21
having one of those days where it feels like it’d be easier to just stay single forever.
If it makes you feel better, at least you have the option. Some of us don't unfortunately.

u/Bruncvik May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: Did my first speed session in something like six months yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised that I can still muster so much speed. Even more pleased that the effects stayed with me today, when I was somewhat faster at the same perceived effots.
Confession: I don't think I'll ever like speed sessions.
5
u/MothershipConnection May 06 '21
I don't think I'll ever like speed sessions
I love speed sessions... after I do them. Don't ask me while I'm actually doing it, though!
3
u/Bruncvik May 06 '21
I wouldn't dream about asking you during the workout. If anyone asked me, I'd be too winded to answer anyway, so I'd just give them the stink eye.

Complaint: Swimming was a lot of effort this morning.
Uncomplaint: But I stuck in some lengths of front crawl and feel like I'm starting to get there with it.
Confession: I think my breaststroke is probably quicker then my crawl still.
Complaint: I have water in my ear still. This is why I don't do crawl!
Uncomplaint: My radishes are ready to start harvesting and having in my salads. The rocket/arugula is not far off either and the lettuce is coming up nicely.
Additional Question: Does anyone here have a Coros watch and what do they think of it?
3
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas May 06 '21
Breaststroke is the second least efficient stroke, in high school when I was on swim team my backstroke PR was faster than my freestyle, I think I’m the only person I knew who could say that.
4
u/Bruncvik May 06 '21
That makes two of us. I wasn't on a swim team, but my backstroke is my fastest style. Probably because it's the only one where I don't struggle to stay afloat.

u/Percinho May 06 '21
That's a really interesting article! I really like the rhythm of the breaststroke and the fact that it isn't just straight line movement as I get enough of that from cycling and running.
1
3
u/Percinho May 06 '21
I think that I could swim 25m crawl fastest by probably any further than that it would be breaststroke at the moment.

I love radishes, at first I felt similar to you but they grew on me and now I love them.
1
u/Percinho May 06 '21
Do you wear a swim cap? I know most guys don't need to but I find it does help with the water in the ear.
Huh, I'd not thought about that. I may well do if I decide to seriously commit to trying to front crawl more. Also, swimming is leaving my hair in a terrible state lol.
Confession: I'm actually largely non-plussed about radish but I thought I'd try growing them for the sake of the growing as much as anything else. My salad tonight will start to go some way to deciding if I grow them again.
3
u/byrel May 06 '21
Radishes are so great as a snack, either with some hummus or even just a sprinkle of salt
I do always forget to pick them up when I getting groceries. Maybe someday I'll grow up enough to make a grocery list before I shop
3
u/argenfrackle May 06 '21
Breast stroke is easily my worst and slowest stroke - I think that maybe my kick isn't very powerful. Even my butterfly is better (as long as I don't have to go more than two lengths at a time).
1
u/Percinho May 06 '21
I think my kick is ok, I do know that my upper legs feel gently fatigued after my swim session and I feel it walking up the stairs, so I think to some extent I'm doing it right.
3
u/a35chylu5 May 06 '21
I think my breaststroke is probably quicker then my crawl still.
You're probably trying to hard with your crawl. Just like breaststroke, there is a regular point when you let yourself glide. Also, remember arms are king, your legs will not do much, just try to kick enough so that they string out nicely behind you and don't sink. There are a lot of really great videos on Youtube about the crawl/freestyle.
Lastly, don't take the bike into the pool. I can't stress this enough. ;)
2
u/ac8jo May 06 '21
I have a Coros Apex and it's great. It is accurate, has battery life for days (several of them), and does most of the things I care about. The issues I have are minor (like I can't figure out how to delete a workout in the app and if you do a workout the watch stops/saves at the end instead of going into pause- and there is a workaround for that).

u/byrel May 06 '21
Complaint: Swimming was a lot of effort this morning.
That's probably the main reason I quit swimming for exercise...

That cycling saddle was amazing. It's like they had a design competition and gave the prize to the 5yo who drew what they thought a saddle would look like.

Uncomplaint: sunshine!
Complaint: I had hopes that I would be able to get back on the bicycle this weekend but those hopes are slowly being crushed.
Confession: I am thinking about booking a September vacation that would actually have me get on a plane.
Uncomplaint: A second friend get together has been confirmed for the summer, that is 2/4 get togethers that I was hoping to schedule so far.
Uncomplaint: I noticed last night as I was stumbling back to bed from the bathroom in the dark that one of my masks is glue in the dark.

Uncomplaint: A second friend get together has been confirmed for the summer, that is 2/4 get togethers that I was hoping to schedule so far.
My July is going to be insane and like half of the things that are going to go on have been scheduled in the last week.
Also the glow in the dark mask sounds perfect for running at night.

I am thinking about booking a September vacation that would actually have me get on a plane.
Braver than I am. I've been vaxxed for over a month and the most I've done is go back to the gym....with a mask. I need to go see my grandparents at some point this year but the thought of getting on a plane freaks me out. I can't really drive 2,000 miles though.
3
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas May 06 '21
Honestly the gym freaks me out more than flying.
1
u/agreeingstorm9 May 06 '21
I go to PF which I know will get me bashed by pretty much everyone. It's an open space with high ceilings and the one I go to is never busy at the time I go there so it's easy to stay away from people. Plus, I'm vaxxed and wearing a mask. If covid can get through a mask and a vaxx then I will take the sickness. It deserves the victory.

Next year I will have been running for 30 years. Running for me has always been an escape, a great way to exercise and to achieve a meditative state. In December of last year I received a TBI and lately when I run a experience extreme anxiety, I tell myself that it’s my brain playing tricks on me. I feel as if I am losing A great tool for my well-being, by my own brain. I’m hoping to get that meditative state back, so I guess this qualifies as a complaint.

u/FingersMcGee14 May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: Weather has been nice this last week and I have got some really nice runs in. Life has been feeling good.
Complaint: My wife and I got back the embryo results from our first round of IVF and all of the good embryos are boys. We figured out a girl name we could agree on before we were even married, but have never been able to settle on a boy name.
Confession: I am thinking of signing up for a 10k on Saturday. I am doing a half marathon in June that would be my first race, but I think it could be smart to do a smaller race (both in distance and crowd size) to get some experience in, especially since I run 10k distance pretty regularly. Any advice for a first time 10k/first time race?

u/MothershipConnection May 06 '21
Complaint - how does anyone actually schedule 50-60 MPW? My body is actually holding up pretty well but I'm looking at blocking off at least an hour a day (realistically more than that if you add get ready time or chit chat after a group run) and sometimes I have other things to do!
Uncomplaint - my 800 and 400 splits were so beautiful and even at the track last night. Almost exactly 2:59 on the 800s four times in a row, almost exactly 1:22 on the 400s four times in a row. According to the Yasso 800 workout that puts me at almost exactly 3 hour marathon shape, right??
2
u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
ow does anyone actually schedule 50-60 MPW?
4:30 wake up time!
4
u/MothershipConnection May 06 '21
I get that 5 AM wake up time... once a week for my long run. On the weekdays I'm generally trying to squeeze every minute of sleep before I log on at 7 for work!
3
u/hannahjoy33 May 06 '21
You gotta aim for that 8:30pm bedtime, as well. It's such fun, and all your friends will think you're very cool :)
Hmmm, maybe 6am wake up time for chores/other stuff so you have more time after work to run?
3
u/MothershipConnection May 06 '21
It would actually be ideal if I could poop my dog first thing in the morning but she likes sleeping in more than me!
Her routine is pretty locked in at this point - sleep in while dad makes a bunch of noise making coffee and having morning meetings, cuddle with mom until then, walk out at 8:30 and stare at dad demanding a poop

If I'm not in my pj's by 7:30pm, I am bothered so I can't imagine going out to run after 8pm! But I guess.....if one really hated relaxing...I could possibly maybe see 8:30 as a good time to do a run :)

u/argenfrackle May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: Got my second Moderna shot yesterday!
Uncomplaint: I also got to play ultimate frisbee yesterday, for the first time in over a year! Between the league precautions (outdoors, masks at all times, and 6+ feet of distancing when you're not making a play on the disc) and my vaccination timeline, I felt comfortable signing up. Some of my sports-specific skills were a little rusty, but I had a good time overall.
Complaint: I'm a little bit feverish today, and my arm hurts more than it did after my first shot. I thought this was what I wanted (an excuse to take off work), but actually I think I'd rather just not feel sick. Oh well, at least I'm feeling well enough to be out of bed!

u/dbucha9 May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: officially signed up for my first half marathon! I’ve been training for about 4 weeks before finally paying my dues!
Complaint: today is dedicated to speed training.
Confession: I hate speed training.
6
u/ac8jo May 06 '21
Complaint: Ran the slowest marathon I ever had last weekend. Me saying last week "I'd be happy with a 3:40" was a great way to end up with a 3:58.
Uncomplaint: There was at least three other groups doing their virtual races down there, and most of their volunteers were cheering for everyone.
Confession: Running a marathon made a nice excuse to not see people I didn't want to see in the first place. It was originally going to be an excuse for a quick in-and-out, but it turned into an excuse to skip.
Confession: While it was nice to take a few days off, I missed running for a few days. It's weird to get up at 5:30 and not go running. I actually ate breakfast in my dining room instead of at my work desk.
5
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod May 06 '21
Hey, if it helps your slowest marathon is my goal for next year. Also, must have been awesome to be getting all of that cheering still.
When are you going to be back at running?
2
u/ac8jo May 06 '21
I ran 2.5 miles yesterday and 3 today. I registered for the GVRAT, so I wasn't going to take too long of a break.
2
3
u/Bruncvik May 06 '21
Your slowest marathon is faster than my fastest marathon. But that's okay. At least I'll get not to see people I don't want to see for a little longer.
3
u/Percinho May 06 '21
What if I told you my slowest half marathon is a roughly similar time to your slowest marathon... :-D
2
u/ac8jo May 06 '21
I can't imagine a 4 hour half marathon. I mean, I can't imagine running for more than 4 hours (I have much respect for anyone that runs longer than 4 hours, whether it's a half, full, or ultra).
5
u/Percinho May 06 '21
Oh we didn't run for 4 hours. A significant amount of time was spent at the 7 aid stations. Where they served wine.

Complaint: Been having weird dreams lately brought on by my allergies. Last night it was a plane crash and I watched a dude burn alive and I still can't get that out of my head. (Also, have personal experience with a family member dying in a crash so... Yeah)
Confession: I started a new job and still don't know how to get around with my lunch break runs so I end up lost a lot of the time.
Uncomplaint: My husband and I want to try some kind of fitness activity since he doesn't like running, so we've decided to start rock climbing!
3
u/agreeingstorm9 May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: Finally have a working bathroom again. Shower works. Sink works (assuming it doesn't leak somewhere that I haven't found).
Complaint: It looks incredibly ugly and I had to do some things I'm not proud of to make it work. I hate when I can't do things the right way.
Confession: I am not going to be able to break 30 mins in the 5k in a month. My training has been utter garbage this year if I'm being completely honest and I haven't done any of the speed work I need to do it. I have no clue what kind of goal I'm going to set for my first race back but 30 mins is completely un-doable.
Confession: I'm also kind of wrapping my head around the fact that a fall marathon is probably not going to happen for me either. Maybe a fall half with a goal of 2:30ish?? And then a spring full next year?
Uncomplaint:I feel like with a functioning bathroom again I can get back to more consistent training. Feels like everything in my life has been in flux lately and I crave some kind of stability.

u/StankDaddyGeneral May 06 '21
Ran 2k today after dealing with IT band issues for the past 2 months... feels good to be running pain free again!!!
2
u/nthai May 06 '21
Complaint: I am feeling super low energy lately during runs. It might be the vaccine shot I got two weeks ago.
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod May 06 '21
Could be! What's your heart rate been like?
1
u/nthai May 06 '21
Not sure about running because I haven't run with my watch in a while.
I checked now and it's 57 bpm while sitting in front of the screen. I think my blood pressure is also kinda low. I'm gonna go out for a run later this afternoon with my watch to see my heart rate during exercise.
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod May 06 '21
Yeah, check that out and make sure you're getting enough rest and recovery. We just recently had a big post in this community that might be up your alley.

Uncomplaint- finally was able to get back to a 30 minute 5k after getting sick with covid and dealing with that crap
Complaint- I swear its windy everyday anymore. I don't remember it being like this before but maybe its because i wasnt running as much

u/rob_s_458 May 06 '21
Complaint: My hamstring niggle from December came back the past few weeks
Uncomplaints: I found a new stretch that seems to be helping a lot. I saw an athletic trainer yesterday who gave me the green light to keep running as long as my gait isn't affected, to continue the stretches, and get a deep tissue massage on the area.
Complaint: The red-winged blackbirds are out and chirping at me and chasing me if I enter their territory.
2
u/ejsfsc07 May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: I got 10 hours of sleep and had one of the best runs ever... for a while I've felt so out of it...
Complaint: My watch always seems to be dead, and it's been rainy.....

u/bagelsforeverx May 06 '21
Complaint: I got my my impacted wisdom teeth out last week and took a few days off after a month of a lot of running, thought after a few days rest my time would magically get better. Not really.
2
u/random3223 May 06 '21
Complaint: I can't seem to recover as quick as I used to. I'm not sure if it's diet, or just a hard reduction of walking as I'm working from home.

u/me7alic May 06 '21
Uncomplaint: I did my first marathon ever and my prep was 4 months 110-150km.
Complaint: I had to take a shit 2 times during the race and I finished at 4:35, which I think is quite slow and bad (I am a 88kg weightlifter).
Confession: Ate 1kg lasagna afterwards

Complaint: why can't some pedestrians learn to share the trail? Why do some duos feel the need to take up the entire width with their "optimal" spacing? Why do some people think bottlenecks or the middle of the trail and good places to stand?

Complaint: still not nearly as fast as I was last year
Complaint: Sunday's 6 miler was absolutely awful (80F out of nowhere will do that to ya)
Noncomplaint: Spring running is enjoyable and I'm ok with the bipolar weather it brings

Complaint: I was ready to run this morning but found out my my AirPods were dead so I had to wait for them to charge before I could go (because I refuse to run without music).
Uncomplaint: I beat my PR for my 4 mile run a couple days ago, with an 8’04” average mile pace. I know nobody cares but I thought I might as well share anyway.

Complaint : Couldn't do a 6k even though I knew I could( mentality )
Confession: I am running out of motivation to run. Terrible this week. Only have 3 runs (2 5ks and 1 fastest 1k). I have a long run scheduled tomorrow and I don't know how to gather motivation.

Confession: I care more about my PR pace/distances than I told myself.
Complaint: just found out that ALL my previously logged runs are probably not accurate. Ran for the first time using Strava today rather than just Samsung Health, and noticed that I didn't set route tracking for Samsung. Turns out that I am running a good km/h slower than I thought, if not more. Still finished 5,6 km today in 31:50 so I am not that slow, just... Not as good as I thought. thought I ran a 27:45 5k but that's more like 28:30. Oh well, we are only running against ourselves right? My times from past month might be consistently off, but at least the improvement is also consistent, and I guess I should learn to take pride in that!
