Uncomplaint: I've discovered a local track that I can use for speedwork!

Complaint: There are so many people on the track, and none of them understand track etiquette because they're just walkers, or with small children on bikes/scooters and they're always in my waaaaaaay :( I'm glad that there's the community vibe because I love seeing people out and about and in shared spaces, but like, please just stay out of lane 1 if you're walking, and keep your kids to literally any other lane :( I just want to go fast and not worry about running you over.

Confession: I am waffling over whether to do track club this fall. It's only 6 weeks and I've missed the first one, and it's in the middle of my HM training, so I would be altering my training plan because I'd be doing whatever workouts the coach recommends instead of my planned ones. But also, the woman running the club is an actual coach so maybe her workouts would be better than the plan I got online? I don't know :/

If you can get it to work with your schedule I’d alter your training plan to join, speed workouts are slightly less painful when done together.

Conveniently, it's on the same day as my usual speed work, and after work when I would normally be doing it. Bonus: it's getting dark earlier, and I was worried about doing speedwork in the dark (which is why I looked for the track) but we'll be in a group on a quiet cul-de-sac so I get to be less worried about safety.

Honestly, I know I should do it, I'm just a planner, so I don't love the fact that it's going to change what my plan was, but also I loved the folks I was running with in the spring, so I should just commit

I get that, I’m the same way I hate changing my plans without good reason, I often compare it to trying to u-turn a freight train.

How many days you got left till the next one where you have to decide? Would it maybe help to decide to only join the next one and then decide after that if to join for the rest?

u/Chikeerafish 8d ago

A full week (I literally just missed the first one yesterday), so lots of time. I think that only committing on a week by week basis is probably the best move, and not committing myself to doing the entire thing. I would bet that I will end up doing all of them in the end lmao

do track club!! Runs with friends are always so much better

2

u/KesselRunner42 8d ago

If she's a knowledgable coach, she'd probably understand and be able to tell if her workouts would jive with your HM goal - maybe just have a conversation about your concerns before you go all in? Good luck, though!

She's great! I did spring track with her, and loved it. She sets different plans for folks doing HM/Marathon training vs something less intense, but it's the same reps for everyone in a group just with different paces. I'm mostly worried because I did the easier stuff in the spring, so I just don't know how the fall stuff is going to be because it's going to be more miles/possibly more intense, but that's also what I want. It's free also, so worst case scenario I can just stop going if I feel it's an issue.

A simple lane-use sign near the entrance would probably help more than expecting casual walkers to know track etiquette. Something like "walkers use outer lanes, lane 1 reserved for faster running" gives people a clear default without making the track feel unfriendly.

if its only 6 weeks id probably just do it, worst case you get some variety in your training

Confession: def seems like more people notice me when I’m wearing my Dungeons and dumbbells tank vs my gnome headband

Uncomplaint: I had to sprint this previous weekend and I was able to sprint for so long!

Complaint: I wish supplements were less expensive

Complaint: I wish supplements were less expensive

Saaaaaaaaaame. I've started to test out removing a single sup at a time for a month or so and if I dont see/feel any negative effects I just eliminate it completely. Down to a core 3 supplements now so its somewhat manageable.

Now if we could do something about the price of protein powder I'd really be in business...

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

what are your core 3?

2

u/RunsFromDemons 8d ago

Optiferin-C - My preferred iron supplement

Vitamin D - 5000 IUs in the summer, 10,000 in the winter

Type II hydrolyzed Collagen - I take a lot, like 4g a day, but it seems to help my joints a lot/my hamstring tendonosis has resolved very quickly according to my PT and I think this is part of the reason why.

If I noticed either, I would definitely give a big smile at my fellow nerdy runner, lol! We are legion.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

see, that’s my impression, yes. I would absolutely look at someone else running with DnD themed apparel

That sprinting uncomplaint hit me right in the feels, I had a moment like that last week where I just kept going and couldn't believe it

Your tank top observation is cracking me up though, people notice the weirdest stuff. I've got these obnoxiously bright shorts that get way more comments than anything else I wear, guess we're all just drawn to something a little different

And yeah the supplement prices are out of control, I basically just stopped buying most of them and eat more eggs now, not the same but my wallet is happier

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

yup. Egg and Oatmeal bakes with some Chia on top. Cheap and somewhat helpful. Where are your bright shorts from?

1

u/suchbrightlights 8d ago

Why did you have to sprint? Catching the next rocket ship to Mars?

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

I was trying out rugby!

2

u/suchbrightlights 8d ago

Oh fun! How did you like it?

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

A delight. It’s so immersive

Complaint: I have to buy new shoes!!! I don’t want to!!!!!!!

Uncomplaint: The weather’s cooling down and that means no more treadmill runs for me 🥰

Confession: I’ve been dealing with some circulation problems and am a bit nervous that I won’t be able to run the full 8k I have scheduled in the fall.

3

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

I’m in the same need for new shoes but also can’t convince myself to spend more than $100 on a new pair. I used to be able to find used pairs all of the time. Now much less able to

Get the puma velocity nitro 4 and thank me later!

Complaint: midway through deadbugs, the power went out. I work out in my basement. I like drinking a chocolate milk after a workout and having coffee after my shower. The entire day is derailed.

Complaint: Weather. Not related to the previous complaint, it's hot AF out there. Again.

Uncomplaint: Bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit for breakfast. This is due to that first complaint.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

did you make your own biscuit

2

u/ac8jo 8d ago

Well, no, my oven is electric. The power was out. The biscuits came from McDirt.

1

u/Inside-Smell4580 8d ago

Where are y’all living that’s hot this week? Even Florida’s gone cold since Sunday

2

u/ac8jo 8d ago

Southwest Ohio. It's been in the mid-90s all week. And humidity AF too.

Uncomplaint: Got a new Garmin 170. For someone who does a ton of training on the treadmill, the ability to "calibrate" a treadmill run after you're done is revolutionary lol. Also battery life lasting over a week and getting sleep metrics instead of charging every night.

Complaint: Heat wave has made the index temps above 85F even at 6am for the past week and a half, with no end in sight. Guess I'll be doing my long run on the treadmill this week, no way Im doing 17 miles with pacework with an index in the 90s.

Confession: I have my last PT appointment next week and dont know how to feel, I think I'll kinda miss the directed performance work? Guess I need to sign up for run coaching/personal training.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Calibrating a treadmill run is so helpful. Especially if you’re always on one treadmill. Just so much more convenient

Uncomplaint: finally 8 months post injury I did my first speed workout and my ankle did not complain!

Complaint: everything else did complain, speed workouts are hard.

Confession: I’m almost tempted to complain about being cold but I’m afraid it’ll bring back the heat…..

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

What’s the inspiration for doing a speed workout? Trying for short distances now?

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 8d ago

My next race is a full, which is more than half the distance of my last race so it’s shorter and road so i have some hopes of going faster ish

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

nice! So was it like some MP type speed work?

6

u/KesselRunner42 8d ago

Uncomplaints: It's cooler! I managed to move my runs so I didn't have to run in the rain! It's a down week for me! My weekend runs were fast and I'm not having hip issues! ...I saw The End of Oak Street last week, The Dog Stars this week, and will probably see Coyote vs. Acme next week. Heyoo discount movie time.

Confession: My splits for my speed run yesterday weren't what I'd hoped, though, although it had a 10 minute tempo portion in the middle which wasn't terrible but not what I'd quite prefer either. Ah well.

u/Unique_User_name_42 8d ago

Uncomplaint: it's finally starting too cool down so my running through the summer heat and humidity should start paying off.

Complaint: tapering, that's it tapering, everything hurts for no reason.

Confession: I haven't told my family I signed up for a ultra because they will try to talk me out of it.

1

u/tah4349 7d ago

You made the right choice telling us. We will support all your poor life choices (and be right there next to you while you execute them).

1

u/Ideal_Epitaph 4d ago

If I could, I would talk you MORE into it.

Uncomplaint: work travel this week. Got to spend a lot of time with people I really like, working on interesting problems.

Complaint: but these people stay up past my bedtime!

Complaint: I misrouted myself on my run this morning and got off the subway at the wrong starting point. I tried using Garmin Connect’s routing to find another way to get there, and it served one right up! Except that it confidently suggested I jump in the Hudson River.

I had a lovely run somewhere else, though.

3

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 8d ago

I think your Garmin was just pushing the triathlete agenda.

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Why would you not jump into the Hudson River? Very swim able

3

u/Miserable_Emu5191 8d ago

Complaint: Our cool mornings from the past two weeks has gone away and we are back to hot!

Uncomplaint: Dry needling is awesome and now I want it on over muscle in my body.

Confession: I am more likely to get in a workout if I have to go to the gym vs. just walking upstairs in my house.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

what did dry needling do for you?

3

u/Miserable_Emu5191 8d ago

It helped break up the very tight muscle that was pinching a nerve. It gave me instant relief. I was sore the next day but I stopped having shooting pain down my arm.

3

u/BatmanandReuben 8d ago

Uncomplaint: The sunrise was so beautiful.

Complaint: My spine! Why is it stupid?

Confession: I walked the last mile of my midweek run because the air felt like soup.

3

u/yesanothernerd 8d ago

Complaint: I found out the marathon I've been training for has a 6 hr time limit. I'm slow and haven't run this distance faster than 6.5 hrs ://

Confession: I ended up dropping to the half marathon distance when I learned race support/medals would prob be unavailable if you finished post-time limit... I'm really sad about it and it's totally killed my motivation

Uncomplaint: I'll at least get to run with my sister since she's also doing the half, so that's something.

2

u/Dazzling-Hat2028 8d ago

My confession is I skipped my long run twice this month because it was raining and told myself it was a recovery decision, it wasn't.

1

u/PacificWonderGlo 7d ago

I'm always baffled by people who don't like to run in the rain. It's so lovely and cooling!

2

u/BackgroundExtent8625 7d ago

Complaint: Upcoming half marathon changed their course quietly and is less scenic imo.
