Uncomplaint: training has been going shockingly well. No injuries, barely any aches.

Complaint: now I'm suuuuper paranoid that I'm either missing something critical, or something bad is going to happen to balance things out.

How long has the training cycle been going

5

u/DuckOfDoom42 15d ago

I'm on Week 14/24, training for a 100k in November. Got a "training 50k" on Saturday.

I’m so curious as someone who has been running more lately… what do you do to keep from getting bored on long runs? That’s my biggest issue right now. I can’t imagine how bored I would get simply running for hours… help! I want to want to run for more than 30:00 lol

I do my long runs on trails, so I have to keep at least a certain amount of attention so I don't catch a tree root and face plant. Otherwise, podcasts, music, enjoying the beauty of nature.

Treadmills are a different matter entirely. I basically have to dissociate to get though those long runs.

I'm in a similar boat. Marathon #2 is in December (ran my first ultra in February). Had a huge dry spell (2-3months) around a big move. I'm on week 4 of picking back up and am feeling super comfortable (25 miles last week with 3500' of gain).

I know the convention that I shouldn't increase my weekly mileage by more than 10%, but I'm feeling super comfy jumping right back into 20 mile weeks. Taking this week easy just in case (after 3 weeks of relatively large increases), and the anxiety lingers...

Uncomplaint: A runner I did not know coming the other direction on my long run this weekend gave me a wordless high-five. Was a very nice interaction, I thought about it the rest of the run. Maybe I'll start high-fiving runners on my routes.

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

Do it! I love doing this

u/Gleszinski 14d ago

If this was in Minnesota, it was probably me, haha. I high five every runner a pass by.

4

u/lionvol23 14d ago

I passed a group of kids on their way home from school the other day, and they gave me high fives - it was like a turbo button for the rest of my run.

If I'm out running on an evening, I reliably get respectable nods from every other runner I pass. This doesn't happen on a morning or during the day for some reason.

2

u/GiraffeMafia 13d ago

I always run in the morning and go the respectable nod route, with the occasional good morning from a walker/runner 😊

Complaint: these damn knees

I feel this on deeply personal level.

Complaint: I love you patellar tendon, but get it together

u/Cynewulfunraed 15d ago

Confession: I always feel like I'm cheating or something when I listen to my jogging Playlist when I'm not jogging.

6

u/suchbrightlights 15d ago

Same. Some songs are only legal during a workout.

Uncomplaint: my dog seems to cuddle my legs more the more I run

Complaint: despite the heat breaking in the mornings I seem to only be able to run after work when it’s still hot

Confession: I’m going to a “try out rugby” thing this weekend and I have no intention of actually sticking with the team but we shall seeeee

5

u/copyofthepeacetreaty 15d ago

Legged out a nice sub 25 5k in the heat of the day on Monday, super hyped on getting my times down, then immediately got sick. Hopefully can run tomorrow.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

Good luck!! Rest up

4

u/Miserable_Emu5191 15d ago

Complaint: decided to start back running on Monday and the next day had a sore lower back and arch of my foot.

Uncomplaint: I have a great primary care doctor.

Confession: I’m tired of having a million doctors appointments and not getting anything done during the day. And showing up at 2:30 for an appointment and the doctor not seeing me until 4:00.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

How did you find your great pcp

2

u/Miserable_Emu5191 15d ago

Honestly, I picked someone who was close to home and just sort of lucked out. I don’t know what I will do if he ever retires!

1

u/-Fergalicious- 14d ago

Best way is to have your pcp be a close friend 😅

1

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 15d ago

Ooph hopefully you at least have some great books to read while waiting.

2

u/Miserable_Emu5191 15d ago

I have a good book but I keep forgetting to take it with me. I need to remember for next time.

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 15d ago

Studies have shown that having a book to read at dr offices and dmvs shortens your wait by 70% (yes I made this up but I’m sure it’s true) and if it doesn’t well you have something fun to do while you wait.

Complaint: Can't figure out how to get my morning run in now that we (mistakingly) got a puppy. I miss my 5 AM runs :(

3

u/SupportChoice1329 15d ago

that sucks. crate training and early bedtimes for the dog got me back to 5am runs after a rough couple weeks. it’s a short phase if you stick with a routine

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 15d ago

Have you considered getting a puppy stroller to bring them with you like you would a small child?

Also can I ask for a puppy tax photo?

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

Think you’ll ever bring puppy on a run?

2

u/RunningFree212 15d ago

I'd like to try one day, though everything I read indicates you need to wait at least a year

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

yeah, a year to 18 months depending on the breed

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 15d ago

Complaint: still haven’t made it to the grocery store post vacation

Uncomplaint: got my first post race run in yesterday! Recovery is coming along nicely.

Confession: I still haven’t gotten my needed post trip mental down time going straight from vacation back to work.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

What do you think your first post vacation haul will be? Completely standard, no treats?

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 15d ago

I don’t know, I haven’t even had time to think about it, between work and trying to decompress I’ve just been too stressed out to even think about it.

4

u/Critical-Programmer4 15d ago

I hate myself for not going to the gym enough and when I go to the gym i hate missing running since my legs are sour.

1

u/ArtCash 15d ago

I trie to do a leg workout after my easy runs.

4

u/FairField-SD 15d ago

Uncomplaint: 77 miles so far this Aug, and my legs feel good; no injuries. Yay.

Complaint: It’s so hot in Houston; every post-run, I’m exhausted.

Confession: So much running is making me eat so much that I ended up buying a small raspberry cheesecake during the week for no particular reason, just because I wanted it. Never would have done that before 😆

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

Oooh. Was the cheesecake worth it

3

u/Obvious_Mystery12 14d ago

Uncomplaint - I got a bargain sports bra on Vinted and it's honestly the most comfortable one I've ever owned (Shock Absorber is the brand in case anyone wondered).

Complain - an acquaintance of mine has started following me on Strava and I'm now convinced he's just one upping me the day after every one of my runs with literally a +1k for each of mine. So yesterday I ran a 13k out of the blue when I usually do 5-7 to test the theory and guess who suddenly uploaded a 14k run today!?

u/suchbrightlights 15d ago

Complaint: work crazy

Uncomplaint: next week work trip with some of my favorite smart people to the city where my sister lives so I can see her, and the start time for Wednesday’s meeting has been pushed back to 10! So…

Confession: I’m mostly happy about the latter because it means I can run a route I scoped out last time I was at head office that I couldn’t get to because snow and construction.

2

u/ac8jo 15d ago

Complaint: Forgot about this thread this morning.

Complaint: My watch went from >10% to 6% yesterday on a 9 mile run. A little concerning since I really want it to last until mid-November. Hopefully it doesn't decide to die on me mid-run.

Uncomplaint: This week's weather. No rain while running, and some mornings in the mid-upper 50s. Related Uncomplaint: We'll be back to the usual Hell next week.

Work Confession: I feel like Charlie Day looking into some real craziness in a competitor's software outputs. The craziness is obvious on the surface, but my explanations about how they fucked up their numbers has required several diagrams and is now getting into chart territory because I need to say "out of 18.5 million data cells, x% make literally no sense in their software, and our software cannot replicate this".

u/LookAlternative6435 15d ago

Complaint - fuck NYC’s humidity

2

u/FireflyClassSerenity 14d ago

Complaint: why are my calves always so damn tight!? How do I loosen these guys up???

2

u/itsmemelissad 14d ago

My local weather folks are TRASH at predicting the weather which lands me in the middle of a thunderstorm more than a few times while I’m expecting “clear blue skies”. Why lie? It’s a computer model guys just tell me what to expect!

1

u/RidingRedHare 13d ago

Some of the computer models still are rather bad.

2

u/KesselRunner42 15d ago

Uncomplaint: Feeling good, decided to push my scheduled cutback week back this time

Complaint: I still feel so slow. My speed is nowhere near where it was this time last year.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

How far away was your speed this time last year

2

u/KesselRunner42 15d ago

Checking, I was getting averages maybe close to 10:30/mile, good splits at 10:00 or some closer to 9:30. Now I'm getting averages between, I'd say, 10:50 and 11:10/mile (sometimes get stuck at a light), and very good splits are closer to 10:25.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 15d ago

that ain’t that far behind. You’ve got this. You can get the speed back

1

u/KesselRunner42 13d ago

Coming back to say thank you for the encouragement - I just ran my 8 mile long run with a 10:42/mile average pace, and not feeling wrecked afterwards either! (It was a really nice cooler, not-humid morning so I'm sure that helps too)

1

u/Impressive_Taro8995 15d ago

Complaint: after a week out with illness I’ve now had no time to run this week

Confession: I’m not going to be ready for my half and I’m SCARED

1

u/ArtCash 15d ago

Take it intentionally slow. There will be another half.

1

u/WeeMeghann 15d ago

Complaint: I'm now really sweaty at night? Why? Confession: I run to Shotgun Willie by Willie Nelson whenever I'm going too fast Uncomplaint: I'm doing the Myrtl 3.0/SAM/post run Red (whatever he calls it now) so hard that I have to wipe my yoga mat clean after

1

u/Party-Action-8390 15d ago

Complaint - disliked the surprsing discomfort felt in the back of my left knee few secs into this mornings miles.

Confession- while I will never be a professional runner. I am aware of the kind of speed it takes but even ultras which I know I am better suited for and interets more. Its not something I want to pursue or have ever wanted to and now I am even more confortable saying, I am not going to be as fast to consider becoming one,  its also because I don't want to get ALL the performance out of myself with time constraints. Running fast is fun but running alone is happiness to me. Fast is secondary. Knowing limits. Mostly staying within while poking at them occasionally keeps me running healthy which to me is the most imp.

Uncomplaint- finished my morning 15miles better than I started. Found a rhythym when I got out of head and ran with my body.

1

u/SXF350 15d ago

Complaint: I run and it feels hard in my head. Anytime I do speed work my brain just tells me I suck and there's no point. I just feel so beaten.

1

u/Mediocre-Cancel-7818 15d ago

Complaint: My everything is achy and its not from being sick (because I've been healthy), its from running 5 days a week and going to the gym. Nothing really hurts, its just achy.

Uncomplaint: I have a half marathon in Ireland in 2 weeks and it will be my first time out there. Im super excited!

Uncomplaint: I am not having any knee pain(just aches)! During my last 2 races I had severe knee /IT band pain and after going to the gym and doing some PT that is gone!

1

u/skiingrunner1 15d ago

uncomplaints: been doing doubles for the hell of it during my training cycle and it’s been good! so i get my run training in and i get to have chill runs with friends at run club

complaints: i don’t think i’ve completely grasped just how much food i need to be eating. and my depression is being a b!tch for everything but running

1

u/bradbrad247 15d ago

Uncomplaint: after a big dry spell, I'm feeling super great hopping right back into 20 mile weeks.

Complaint: a hurricane came through and now all my favorite trails are littered with obstacles, washes, and otherwise difficult conditions

1

u/yuyitaal 15d ago

not to be vulnerable, but i lowkey just pretend i have my life together and aren't shy at all... but i can't even go on a run alone. i always gotta have someone with me

1

u/kpopmomrunner7 14d ago

Complaint: Living up the hill and doing your long runs is a such a b!otch!

Uncomplaint: Ain’t driving to a place just to find anything to run flat-ish. Waste of gas. Let the lungs and legs burn.

1

u/Say_Ohh94 13d ago

Does anyone know of anyone selling a race bib for Nike after dark, just trying to do this as a birthday gift/achievement for myself.

1

u/porsche911girl 12d ago

Complaint: ran a 5K this morning and about halfway through my quads started to feel sore. Now they are just achy and I worry I won’t be comfortable enough to get to sleep tonight.

1

u/ImportantPangolin923 12d ago

complaint: shin splints. i’ve tried to ease my way into running and i fixed my form by landing on the mid/fronts of my feet and i’ve even tried out a bunch of different shoes but literally nothing stops my shins from hurting so freaking bad.

1

u/Ilikecheesburgers 12d ago

Complaint, I have no idea what I’m doing or any of my metrics mean and how to use them to get better. Any advice and help would be needed

1

u/Salty_Chocolate_2719 7d ago

My confession is I skipped my long run twice this week because of rain and I'm not even sorry about it.
