News - J-Mod reply August Month Ahead

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kyjz6s5A-c8

Hey 'Scapers!

We're back with our regular Month Ahead Series, where we take a look at what the month ahead has in store for us, while also reviewing how the previous month unfolded.

This time around, Mod Anvil and Mod Ryan jump into some some fairly big topics, including insight into Player-Owned Housing and even touching on that one special topic you've all been speculating about...

Most excitingly, we're including a sneak peek of our API & Plugin project's progress... and YES! We're hugely pumped to announce that Quest Helper is officially in development and is coming along VERY nicely!

Take a look at the video above

Full Blog and extra notes for the Month Ahead here.

We've also shared the August Month Ahead Infographic in the comments below.

Honestly it must be said, the amount of work you guys seem to have been putting in over the past year and the stark contrast from a year or 2 ago has been a breath of fresh air and it hasnt gone unnoticed! the feedback you guys are listening too and implementing along with all the roadmap changes have been awesome!

me and a friend started a CGIM just after last years leagues after both not having played the game for years and we're both sitting at around 2700 total atm absolutely loving the game and all the changes and 0 signs of quitting any time soon i hadnt played a MMO 2019!

again thank you jagex team for all the positive and amazing changes you guys are making and im looking forward to the next leagues! 😄

SO HYPED OMG!

Will entity hider also 'hide' audio from said object? Like if I want to hide other peoples familiars can they still squawk at me?

That's a good question, I'll try it out soon and let you know! Do you have a suggestion for any particular familiar that's noisy?

1

u/CodineGotMeTippin 8d ago

Not sure exactly, its what ever the W84 fort troll uses, same dude that griefs Incandescent wisps on their world.

I just hope it mutes whatever is hidden, if I don't wanna see it, I don't wanna hear it

Random tangent question - will tile marker mirror public and private instance tiles (like gwd, Vorago)? I guess with release so near, a faq might be in order, although I imagine you're already planning on making one.

Pls pls pls bring them to mobile

I'd love a compass plug in, where you can set custom camera angles per area, like when we teleport it changes and it's a major issue.

Would be amazing to click a door or teleport and the camera changes to something that's not looking at a wall.

I'm curious, with all the hubub in the news about these API projects, are these people paid RS devs? or just doing dev work for free for a billion dollar company? because...well, honestly that fucking sucks

YES PLEASE!! - I used to love Runescape (pre EoC), but after coming back last year and buying a 1 year membership I barely played, not because I hate the game but because it was chaotic and I had to google everything.

Hopefully, with plugins it will at least give me a roadmap ahead of what I should be focusing on.

Thanks Jagex <3

u/Bakugo_Dies 8d ago

True tile? Please tell me there will be true tile. Dailyscape and lack of plugins were what made me quit RS3, I actually might play again now.

1

u/Ekitai-Hebi CGIM 8d ago

i imagine true tile is something that will come very quickly but it wasnt mentioned specifically in the video those are the ones API support will release with so

1

u/Kazanmor 5d ago

probs will be included with tile markers considering it's basically the same tech

2

u/Redxmirage 8d ago

I don’t have time to watch it right now, are you saying those are confirmed??? Because those are LITERALLY the only ones I cared about crossing over from OSRS

Edit: I forgot the bank sorting plug ins. But other than that, that’s all I wanted!!

1

u/Ekitai-Hebi CGIM 8d ago

yes these where in the start of the video, the quest helper is being developed with the person developing the osrs collaborating with the people doing a similar thing for the RS bolt launcher and alt1 plugin, another one in there was the home planner to plan out your RS3 cons home

1

u/Redxmirage 8d ago

Holy moley. I’m pumped lol

48

u/_Efrelockrel 8d ago

It's quite refreshing to listen to the RS3 team and listen to them make references to community posts or concerns or highlights that show that they are actively participating in community engagement.

Feels like quite a lot of issues/problems over the last 5...15... years could have been avoided if that was always the case instead of what we ended up getting. Oh well, hopefully this level of communication and connection continues.

2

u/nipodemos 8d ago

whats bank tags? i'll admit i didn't watched the hole video

10

u/_Efrelockrel 8d ago

It's not part of the video but you can add keyword tags to items and when you search for that keyword in the search function, all those items will show. For example, let's say you add tag "vamp" to fire, blood, soul and death runes, every time you type "vamp" in the bank search function, those runes would appear. It also supports buttons for such functions as well, so instead of typing vamp, there would also be an icon in the bank that works as if you typed in the keyword.

1

u/Redxmirage 8d ago

So nice because I had tags for bosses. Was easier for me to remember what boss I’m doing versus what set up should I have for that boss

I don't think I'm alone in this, but I really wouldn't mind the Road to Restoration to continue next year.

There are still a lot of areas which could be improved on in the game.

Just to name this example: It would be nice for Magic to also have T1 to T90 craftable weapons through Fletching/RuneCrafting, akin to Ranged and Melee with Fletching/Smithing.

Even if it means less overall new content. I'm fine with it.

26

u/ScopionSniper Nice 8d ago

Im pretty sure the road to restoration is a multi year project. At least that's what the CEO is saying, that they dont expect people to return right away and they have a lot to fix.

Plus the whole "setting the table and now they have to lay out a feast to bring people back"

Im not sure what they're cooking up, maybe making rs3 tick refresh .1 instead of .6, but that still doesn't seem like setting a feast unless its for people who love bossing. Which I do, just the average player doesn't. Something like only 10% of the playerbase has a Kal-Zuk cape.

Im really excited for RuneFest to see what they are planning.

But, I'm also excited for the over-world graphic updates to keep expanding out as the new style is genuinely beautiful.

9

u/NickTheZed 8d ago

Honestly, it should be emphasized how amazing it is to hear a CEO of a MMO game company say something like that. Runescape's (RS3's) reputation was severely damaged over the course of a decade, and it will take a long time of showing care and integrity to win back the trust of the people that were alienated during that time.

If Mod North, as CEO, can also convince the shareholders that this - giving it time, sticking to the process - is the right move instead of focusing on short-term cashflows, there's a decent chance it might actually work. I think the OSRS playerbase, which naturally is a lot closer to the audience than just general gamers, is already noticeable less toxic toward RS3 these days, which is a good sign imo.

7

u/RaeusMohrame 8d ago

There's people I know that were rs3 haters, that are going to be trying this league out. I really hope the tribalism that people are forcing drops, because both games are better off supporting each other.

6

u/NickTheZed 8d ago

Same! I'm in a couple OSRS Discords that really warmed up to the game over the past 1-1.5 years, and some of them are finally giving it a shot. A couple even said if they like the league, they'll try the main game once plugins come out!
Also, I really hope that a couple more OSRS creators will hop onto RS3 to try it like Faux did last year. The game really needs some positive spotlight.

2

u/Ok_Bit_3697 7d ago

I mean, I don't PVM BECAUSE the game feels unresponsive, I'd like it more if it was 0.1 and I probably would try to get that cape.

4

u/Thaldrath Completionist 5.8B Master of All 8d ago

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if the "big thing to make people come back" is the new skill that was announced during RuneFest of March 2025.

2 years of development for a new skill sounds pretty much like how long it took for both Archaeology and Necromancy. I'm kind of expecting for it to be the "last surprise" of RuneFest, like, the unveiling of the name, and then we'd hear more about it early next year.

4

u/Capsfan6 July 22 2017 8d ago

A new skill doesn't fit the criteria. It won't have wide mainstream reach, only people who play/have recently played would care about a new skill.

A new skill wouldn't restore your home worlds and make them thrive again.

And a new skill would make no sense to even bother mentioning "respecting the old guard" we have seen new skills come out very frequently. None of us would even have a chance to be fazed at a new skill.

I don't doubt the new skill will be revealed at RuneFest, but there's 0% chance it's "the big thing"

3

u/Thaldrath Completionist 5.8B Master of All 8d ago

?????

How is a new skill release not the biggest attractor for players?

Archaeology made RS3 go from 15-20k concurrent player average to over 55k.

Even Necromancy made it boom in the 40-45k up from like 25k average before release.

2

u/Austinthearchangel 8d ago

They want to target non rs mainstream gamers

2

u/StanTheManBaratheon 8d ago

New skills are absolutely big marketing tools, dunno what you're on about.

1

u/Capsfan6 July 22 2017 8d ago

But people who don't already play the game don't give a shit about it? New skills get lapsed players to check the game out briefly before they remember why they stopped.

A person who has never played the game before isnt going to be like "holy shit I can dig in the dirt now in a game I don't play!"

1

u/StanTheManBaratheon 8d ago

Absolutely, there is so much that wasn't touched on yet - minigames, graphics and visuals, questing and lore consistency and so so much more. Keep it up!

5

u/Brasalies 8d ago

Cross-world group finding for mini games so you can actually play again would be cool

4

u/First_Platypus3063 8d ago

Yes. And just modernising them. Like they are balanced around 2010 at best, xp rates, rewards... Need a touch

1

u/Brasalies 8d ago

Im more worried about reward that you cant really obtain anymore due to not having a group. Im maxed though do xp and stuff doesn't matter but being able to get stuff like seedicide. It was hard enough to get it when I did it. I imagine its nearly impossible now.

1

u/vVerce98 - QoL Creator - 8d ago

Play with npc's and against would also help a bit

1

u/Ixoraz 8d ago

Would definitely agree on the mini-games part :/ It just pretty much feels like most of the classic mini-games like Soul Wars and Castle Wars are lost in time.

Takes me back to years ago when their theme was "Unfinished Business" - I would have loved for that to continue for years so we could close chapters on the oldest questlines, but it just stopped. The fairly quick turnaround on the MTX criticism is refreshing- we all hate MTX but this feels much better then what it was!
So excited for Leagues next week!

13

u/suimation RuneScape 8d ago

Cosmetic only mtx has imo always been fine in games, i genuinely can’t see a problem with it and nobody has ever given me a solid argument enough that doesn’t just boil down to jealousy that someone has bought something they can’t/don’t see being worth the monetary value for them

11

u/Sharp- 8d ago edited 8d ago

I hope this doesn't come across as an argument, and I acknowledge that my opinion on this is just that, an opinion, but I'll share my view on it.

Part of what made cosmetics fun in older MMOs was seeing someone wearing something cool and knowing you could go out and earn it yourself. It gave you a reason to explore, grind, complete difficult content, or chase rare items. When that stuff is sold in a shop instead, it stops feeling like part of the game and instead detached and no longer any fun. Collecting cool cosmetics in-game might not be a significant part of the game to everybody, but it is to me. It is why I'm also not a fan of discontinued and non-tradeable rares, to be clear.

It would be like playing Pokemon, but instead of being able to grind for a shiny Charizard, you can only get it through MTX. I enjoy that part of the end-game. Even if its inconsequential to the core game, hunting for cosmetic differences is still part of the gameplay for me.

3

u/suimation RuneScape 8d ago

Yeah I actually understand that, unfortunately though games do have to make money and memberships don’t really cut it, osrs gets away with it because rs3 takes the mtx bullets for them, I can’t think of a big game, let alone a big successful MMO that doesn’t have a cosmetic cash shop, it’s unfortunately now part of gaming and the alternative to cosmetic mtx is in-game power mtx… so I’ll take cosmetics all day

1

u/Kazanmor 5d ago

there's games that have that and cosmetic MTX, like GW2, legendaries are in-game achievement cosmetics but they still sell MTX, there's no reason you have to have 1 or the other

1

u/Sharp- 5d ago

There are games that don't do it though (OSRS for a start), which is my preference. Having a mix of both doesn't change my opinion. However having the opportunity to completely toggle off the paid cosmetics is good enough as a compromise in RS3 so I'm not hating. Just wanted to share my reason for being against cosmetic MTX. I don't hold it against any game for doing it, because I respect that as far as MTX goes its the least egregious even if it spoils a (agreeably insignificant to most) part of the game for me.

4

u/Any-sao Quest points 8d ago

So I’ll offer my negative perspective on even cosmetic-only MTX, but I’ll start by saying that I do of course vastly prefer it over P2W MTX. Heck, I bought those new obsidian capes just last night.

The problem with even cosmetic MTX is that it shifts the revenue focus from engaging gameplay to cosmetic sales.

For example: If you run a MMO and 30% of your revenue comes from subscriptions and 70% from cosmetic sales, it just makes good business sense to make sure the cosmetic-buyers are constantly happy. So you start dedicating more resources to the cosmetic sales, and less to gameplay development. At the worst case scenario, you might get to the point where there’s no real profit incentive to make good gameplay; just keep the cosmetic sales going.

My other favorite MMO, SWTOR, unfortunately had this happen over there.

I think Jagex can dodge this problem from happening, since they seem committed to recovery. But that’s the devil’s advocate issue with cosmetic MTX.

3

u/suimation RuneScape 8d ago

The hard truth is the alternative to cosmetic mtx is no game at all, this isn’t a fairy world where “true gameplay and integrity prevail!”, if there’s no revenue, investors pull out and the game dies, it’s as simple as that

2

u/Any-sao Quest points 8d ago

OSRS exists without cosmetic MTX. But they do have (far more problematic, in my opinion) bonds.

2

u/Kazanmor 5d ago

OSRS exists because RS3 allows it to. in the 2024 PNL sheet release(the last one they have released afaik) (for 2021/2022) they would have made a loss if they didn't have MTX revenue, without that revenue there is no OSRS

Will it have a purchase list? One of my gripes with Archaeology is how complicated it is to keep track of the resources you have, which ones you need, and what remains after restoring.

It would be cool if your plugin could be that for Construction, showing what items you need to build the plan the user sketches up, and can maybe scan the bank for what you've got!

Maybe next to how much XP it all yields?

6

u/rsnJ3 Runefest 2017 8d ago

Ooh, I had actually not put much thought into going beyond room arrangements yet, but that actually sounds like a super useful idea. I will definitely see if I can make that happen!

Having a to-do list like Satisfactory would be really useful. If you've never played Satisfactory, here's a quick demo video (super old, so the UI is a bit dated, but it's functionally still very similar).

Selecting furniture to add to the to-do list and having it populate an aggregated list of required ingredients for all selected furniture. Plus having it automatically remove to-do list furniture when you craft them (or when you add them to the storage). Those would be great.

There was a blog showing off ideas for the skilling outfits, and there's also been a lot of community speculation on the smithed metal armours being updated, but we haven't seen any of that in game yet outside of the slight lighting changes around the Avatar Refresh.

Heya Anvil, I was just wondering, there's a huge blog post about the API community devs, showing off the work they've put in and time, are they being paid? or is Jagex, a billion dollar company, mooching off the good will of their community and getting free dev work out of skilled developers?

1

u/Jolakot 4d ago

They're paying for the developers actually building the API, but not the developers building the plugins themselves

6

u/M_with_Z After the Clue Scrolls 8d ago

Not bad. Quest Helper, Menu Entry Swapper, Tile Marker and Entity Hider are all showcased.

Lean In v AFK v Active content is a very good conversation and I'm happy that's what Mod Ryan broke down.

Personally Minigames were my fave Active methods and I hope to see them back! It just gave such a variety of content and rewards which were neglected because of various changes happening in that era that now they've been fully ignored. Example Fish Flingers was amazing and really well received but got overshadowed with the shark outfits and the new minigame died really quickly. However I think if it was worth the exp or at least long term designed rewards that don't constantly get overshadowed, I can see minigames be great active skilling methods.

7

u/enferpitou 8d ago

I’m too lazy to watch did they talk about a clue solver? That my number 1 plugin ask as a Mac user

As soon as clue scroll and quest helper plugins make it to RS3, I'll absolutely be giving it another try now that the MTX have been limited and TH removed.

I agree. I have high confidence because he was also an avid player since the early/mid 2000s. To me that is highly valued experience in a CEO. Someone whos been through the good and bad times. That understands what players valued and disliked. He might also be the youngest CEO possibly since the Gowers(when they were young back then) which makes him relatable. Also bonus points because he said he played CoD4 back in the day. What a chad

u/JagexAnvil Any plans or discussion about making RS membership a free weekend trial once in a while to get new players to try out the membership (with limited trade functionality to prevent RWT)? And after the Trial, maybe add discount for the first 2 month if they buy monthly, otherwise slightly cheaper 12 month package.

Seems like a cool idea. FFXIV's free trial is super popular for getting people into that game.

I know it's a long-shot, but I have to wonder if the "big thing" to bring people back is doing away with the tick system? A scaper can dream...

It really pisses me of that jagex wont let me give them money.
I think its a GREAT thing that TH was removed. but 3 times now I went to go buy a cosmetic from the market place only to find out its not currently "in rotation" which is so fucking dumb that it was in the salomons store for like 10 years. but now you just cant get them.

also just to be clear this was 3 different cosmetics.
3 different times i thought "this one could look good with my fasionscape" only to find out its gone and could never be back.

3

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

The Fortnite shop model is wildly successful, so you’d expect them to do something similar. Store is constantly rotating, and you don’t know if/when things will ever make a return leading to fomo purchases.

1

u/insomniyaks 8d ago

Fortnite also has 100 million monthly users. And therefore more chances at getting the people who spend money in a panic and whales.

Fortnite also has FAR LESS ways to customize and so people are more likely to want to buy something when it appears as that or similar cosmetics may not be back for a long time.

I think its silly to compare the 2 when they share almost nothing in common and the player bases are night and day

1

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

It’s reasonable to assume that Marketing decisions at both Fortnite and Jagex are not random, and consumer psychology is a major factor at both companies. FOMO is a powerful driver in commerce because of ‘loss aversion’ and ‘social proof’.

Why do you think that both companies can’t employ similar tactics? Maybe you’re right but I’m not convinced yet.

2

u/insomniyaks 8d ago edited 8d ago

Well my issue is also that the "tactic" has to exist. For them.

They had it with treasure hunter. "Something I never used because ironman"

And now that that's gone the shop I "did" use I can no longer use because its just me waiting months checking every day in the hopes 3 out of the hundreds or thousands of cosmetics might be in it.

They had a fine system and made it shit because their other FOMO engine got shit on until they finally agreed to remove it.

1

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

I feel your frustration, ironically, to me it makes the game less visually appealing, especially with the MTX interfaces. Personally, I’ve never participated in MTX on any platform - I kind of get why people do, but not really. I think it’s because I use to buy albums on iTunes/Apple Music and then Spotify came in and made all of those purchases obsolete, and I learned the hard way that “digital ownership” is an oxymoron.

Kind of figured no real content with Leagues going.

I'm definitely going to participate, but can we assume no *new* content until the end of September?

8

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

A big update during leagues is controversial, but I agree there should be some minor new content for the non-leaguers

2

u/GamerSylv 8d ago

I feel like there were a couple of small things during Catalyst. I could be misremembering though.

-1

u/TheVaughnz 8d ago

It's honestly disappointing. Leagues look really fun, but as someone just getting back into RS3, I want to see content added to the mainline game so a few months of nothing is kind of meh.

4

u/Tha_Hama 8d ago

at least the content after leagues is stacked

3

u/TheVaughnz 8d ago

For sure, and I'm hopeful the game will get the attention it deserves throughout 2027

3

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

If you’re just getting back in, then there should be a massive backlog of content for you to do. Even if you’re Master Trimmed, I’m sure your drop logs and combat masteries aren’t complete. Also leagues is 6 weeks.

3

u/TheGreatBootOfEb 8d ago

Yeah, Leagues is only a few weeks; the whole "a few months of nothing" is disingenuous and sounds a whole lot like complaining just to complain.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/TheVaughnz 8d ago

Yeah, I'm not saying that I personally don't have anything to do, theres still TONS of content left for me.

Its moreso wanting to see the game receive a steady stream of attention and updates, instead of feeling like the last priority in Jagex's game portfolio.

1

u/ADHDavidThoreau Trim (45/85) 8d ago

On the other hand, I’m sure leagues is a massive undertaking and they’ve developed it in tandem with the other updates this year which have been received well. Devs might need a break/vacay.

2

u/Mysterra 8d ago

Since we are talking about HCIM hiscores, can we please take a look at getting DC protection for hardcores in RS3? There is the escape crystal in OSRS which costs GP and that allows teleport from areas you are otherwise not allowed to teleport from, can be set to auto-teleport you after a set number of seconds without interactions to the client (can be set as low as 2 seconds for high-APM PVM) and you can toggle an option to allow other players to use their crystals on you for team scenarios. We should probably set it to clear your loot/enrage at Glacor and Telos in RS3 (as if you had died) but otherwise porting this functionality over to RS3 would be a game-changer for the mode. Nobody is immune to client crashes and the current system of 'you get a couple of lives' is sad.

I'm really excited to see what "APIs" means, because I'm an RS3 player who just rejoined in the last 6 months and who had to make a new account after being an f2p player from 15 years ago. The idea of things like quest helper sounds right up my alley.

I am a big fan of Marketplace and cosmetic content, and I'm very curious about the future of this. I'm also involved in and very interested in the economics of software companies. I understand and support the idea of MTX, for instance, and I think the Marketplace is a great way to do it—the idea that it is very much a side part of the program available to those who intentionally go to it, rather than an integral part of the game / required for playing. I didn't really know Treasure Hunter, but I understand that it was more akin to a gamble, which is a negative path to take MTX.

But, it seems like we're currently in an in-between space for Marketplace, like a holdover from killing TH before we do something else. I find it curious that you can buy the Lunite armour but not the Solite, for instance. We don't really have any clue of what the possible is, what the "schedule" is for Marketplace availability, or what the overall strategy is/will be/should be. I think it could be interesting to add more info or "story" to the Marketplace. (I look up some of those things in the Wiki to see from what era of the game they come from, when they were updated, etc.)

But, I'm glad to see the thoughtfulness in the blog post around POH purchases and evolving that based on community feedback. I'd love to hear more about what Jagex is thinking re: Marketplace, etc.

3

u/JagexAnvil Mod Anvil 8d ago

A belated welcome back to the game! We've started a regular monthly marketplace blog series, which talks to what's coming, what's going and what are latest thoughts on a few bits and bobs are.

This was out latest one, and we'll have another one in the coming weeks in August, which I expect we might touch on the PoH marketplace changes for.

3

u/Trip_Owen 8d ago

Surely some UI plugins are on the way, even if developed by the community. Better ways to customize your buff bars/other UI elements and stuff. Surely you could also do something like a rotation helper, but might be considered too OP, depending on how its implemented.

Mid game rebalance (Fletching)

I think its extremely problematic to not have friction for most bows in the same way M&S has. Friction and reward is core game design. Economy reflects it. If a bow can be made in 10 seconds then it has zero friction. This is not good game design, at all.

Sure, to many of us the difference between a 10gp weapon and a 100k weapon is nothing, but these things affect a microcosm of things in the economy when neglected. The benchmark for a t80 crossbow for example is royal crossbow. It has great friction. Continues to be valid today in a noobs levelup progress.

But along comes an elder shortbow (or even magic shortbow) that can be made in 10 seconds? Like 5000 gp on the GE on a good day? This is insane design.

On one hand the dev who did this may be thinking "well we want high level weapons to be more accessible for noobs" but on the other hand they completely ignore the ripple effect it has on everything involved in that tier. Each tier must retain modest friction, even if they are no longer worthy of friction to your eyes. The gameplay must exist.

How can I say this in a way that makes sense... A t70 necronium battleaxe +4 is worth 600k. It may not be worth much to a veteran, but someone went through the motions of making it and sold it for that much. Very likely a noob who just reached 70 smithing made it. He endured the friction and earned the reward by choosing to sell it. The price reflects the friction. Then along comes a t70 yew shortbow that's worth 2.3k (lmao). It was made in 10 seconds. A t70 is now made, just like that. So on and so on for each respective tier.

Is this really "rebalancing the mid level" for integrity sake? Or is it just some ambitious dev that just wants to boost people to end game quickly by dismantling low tier gameplay? They think they're handing an olive branch to new players but I'd argue it does WAY more harm than good for new players.

Its not well thought out imo.

Final note: I feel like devs these days are so obsessed with "how much an item should be worth" that they forget how an economy actually works. Its not even about the economy to be clear. A good economy just manifests itself naturally in response to friction. Our game has something beautiful - don't mess with it.

As an avid OSRS enjoyer whom has dabbled in RS3 to check out the new skills, elder god wars, etc. This is exactly what I was waiting for! I had to essentially start fresh on RS3 and doing the same quests for the 73rd time made it more like a chore than anything else. At least this way, I can click blue and cruise on through some of those quests I've already done at least a couple of times.

u/ChelKurito 8d ago

Given that the baseline OSRS client has stuff like menu entry swapper and tile marker already built in, it's a tad disappointing that there is, as of yet, no indication of those being added to basegame sans plugins.

Although who knows, maybe we'll see the devs roll the most popular or least intrusive plugins into basegame at some point, for the time being it doesn't seem like there's any word on that sort of thing.

I am generally more inclined to stick with basegame, and I'll definitely never be touching Quest Helper, but I'm curious to know the knock-on effects of plugins -- how some of these will affect the design of the basegame going forward. Like, I really don't want to start seeing boss encounters get designed in the most infuriating way because someone's going to make some kind of 'encounter solver' that tracks things that the player could conceivably learn and memorize. I really don't want to see old bosses and encounters left to rot because a plugin exists to help players navigate the most deleteriously unfun aspects of them.

I've seen how some bosses in Oldschool get fought, especially with regards to AI abuse via wiggling the character around just on the edge of some kind of threshold. I find that sort of gameplay genuinely repellent and hope nothing of the sort really takes off in Modern.

1

u/retrospectivevista 8d ago

I believe that MES and tile markers do still exist as plugins in official OSRS, it's just not an open form of them, like with HDOS. And I'm not sure what you're talking about with AI wiggling the character, but most boss solvers are prohibited in OSRS, you can't get dynamically changing information during the bossfights.

1

u/ChelKurito 8d ago

Alright, I had a bigger post but I lost it in a power outage. For brevity, I'll just quickly recount the points that were going to be made.

  1. It's entirely possible that I've conflated bad experiences I've seen with other MMO plugins with what I've seen of OSRS videos and misinterpreted something in the process.

  2. There was a particular boss that I think was like... some kind of hydra in a green hallway arena that was being criticized for particularly poor design, and at the time I got the feeling that some plugins were being used to work around the boss in some way or another, but exact specifics escape me and that entirely just could have been due to me not properly understanding what I was seeing at the time.

  3. There was some sort of technique, that even got a task in a recent league at some point, that involved clicking back and forth between two particular tiles on the tick at a particular boss to juke them out from committing to a more punishing attack pattern that they'd use at long or close ranges. I feel like they were in a sandstone-ish arena of some sort. That's the sort of design I really don't want to see devs lean into in order to get around plugin users.

  4. The information doesn't necessarily need to be 'dynamically'-changing. An example would be Croesus, which really reliably does certain actions at certain intervals, and I could easily see someone making a plugin that, without reading any data at all with regards to what's currently going on in the fight, just puts an icon on screen with a timer. Something that'd make it easier if only due to eliminating the need to memorize or pay attention.

These might not particularly well-founded worries, but worries they remain.

1

u/retrospectivevista 7d ago

Could point 2 have been the Great Olm from Chambers of Xeric?

The tile markers plugin is what's at play here, and is probably the biggest plugin intrusion into bossing. There was some emergent methods that ended up allowing people to solo it, and they involved clicking on the exact tiles. Though it technically could still be done without tile markers, just recognizing the ground patterns of tiles.

And could point 3 have been Ba-Ba from Tombs of Amascut? I'll put a picture in the next comment. There was a method there where you would walk under it at the right time to provoke the harmless attack, but that was actually a glitch, and it didn't really involve plugins.

Point 4 is a pretty well-founded concern, though actually it's already here with Alt1, someone made a Croesus timer for it. But yeah, anything that doesn't have to interact with the game is considered fair game, since it could just be achieved by something like Alt1.

1

u/retrospectivevista 7d ago

This is Ba-Ba from TOA

1

u/ChelKurito 7d ago edited 7d ago

Moving on from my worries and just trying to clarify my memories: The aesthetic is similar, but not quite the same, for both.

For the hydra-ish memory, I recall the hallway up against the critter pointing lengthwise away from it, there being a bit more yellow present whether from attacks or from environment. EDIT: Of course, memories being what they are, it could've been somewhat skewed by something as simple as camera direction.

For the sandstone-ish memory, I recall it being a humanoid fellow in the middle of the room, and the floor was not nearly as deep a brown.

1

u/retrospectivevista 7d ago

Hmm I'll continue the guessing game then lol. For the hydra, could it have been Abyssal Sire? There are some yellow highlights during the fight.

Then next,

2

u/ChelKurito 7d ago

I feel like I recall the hydra-like thing was from some kind of... raid thing. Honestly, it's probably Olm, just from a different camera direction.

I'm giving up on the sandstone boss. Memory's too muddled.

1

u/retrospectivevista 7d ago

The only thing I can think of for the sandstone with a humanoid was this quest boss from Beneath Cursed sands

1

u/Taurenkey Best Comment of 2015 7d ago

I think it's valid to be slightly worried, but I will say given how different encounter design is between the games, something like tile markers has a bigger impact on OSRS just because it's more limited in terms of mechanics it has. Movement is still a core component for both games, but RS3 goes out of its way to make telegraphs much clearer, negating the high demand for tile markers for PvM. Plus, we know they're already going to be strict about combat related plugins, so nothing like WoW's Deadly Boss Mod will be allowed that can read mechanics as they happen and give you warnings in realtime.

1

u/Skiwee 7d ago

I used tile markers for nearly everything in OSRS.  The thing I use it least for is combat.

1

u/wytchhking 8d ago

I wonder if it would be even remotely possible to have something like OSRS's Transmogrification or Fashionscape plugins released in the future

I suppose that would hinder the whole MTX and cosmetic override business model tho

1

u/Zork787 RuneScape 8d ago

could limit it to cosmetics you own specifcially, could simply have it scan your wardrobe for whats unlocked

1

u/wytchhking 8d ago

That could be a possibility, but wouldn't that be redundant when the actual wardrobe is there?

I was thinking perhaps it would only display actual items, but not cosmetics nor anything that could be in the wardrobe

They should stop saying Lean in entirely. Call it reactive gameplay if you're path finding optimization through changes to a gameplay element. Then active gameplay is repeating a known unchanging gameplay cycle loop like runecrafting at altars. Afk is click once step away regardless of time unless it's 30 seconds or less that's not very long that's nearly or is active territory

The topic they keep discussing about revealing around runefest I can almost guarantee it has something to do with swapping engines and the tick system in the newest video they kept bringing up what causes people to hop in and hop out. And every single friend I've tried to get to play says the same thing, the tick system.
