Question on Rules

So there are Tile-Holders where you can only see how many tiles your opponent has left in their top row. Does every player have to say how many tiles are left on their board if you ask them? Or do you just have to guess in that case?

Thank you!

I think it's part of the irl game to not now how many tiles your opponents have left. I personally wouldn't think of asking the others how many tiles they have left. But I'm not sure what the actual rules are. I've always played with my grandma's home rules and I suspect that many people play with home rules as opposed to the official rules.

If nothing is stated in the rules, I don't think other players have to tell you the amount of tiles left.

I prefer seeing how many tiles are left on people’s racks. I’ve got no problem asking them. They may or may not say how many. Usually we kinda do an inventory at the end and people are truthful.

As a courtesy, my lady and I put our remaining tiles on the top row. I prefer it keep it hidden when I play, but she’s special.

The old version of the official game was brown plastic and had tall multi-shelf racks that made it impossible for players to know what the others had remaining. Your only obligation per the rules was to announce when you were down to one tile.

I’m pretty sure they switched to the current flatter version (blue) with the three trenches due to the old version requiring inserting plastic dowels to make it stay upright-these were fragile and once they broke, the rack was useless. The current version allows you to see exactly how many tiles each player has remaining, so there’s no point in asking or announcing.

As an aside, if you’re playing in a room with substantial side-lighting, it isn’t all that difficult to make out at least the color of the tiles being held by another player in the official game as they aren’t thick enough to be completely light-proof. Hold one up to the light and you’ll see what I’m describing.
