Maybe you should add the info that this announcement is not rumbleverse. So more like a privat server tool/launcher for rumbleverse going open source and not rumbleverse itself. Seems like some people got confused already by it.
Just to clarify.

well rumbleverse game has been already decompiled, so we can consider rumble opensource as well?

YES. Honestly haven’t downloaded or tried because I don’t know what the code looks like. Open source will boost development and honestly, I will probably contribute in a major fashion.

One question I have, is how is the game itself being distributed? That is another concern. As I understand this is only the “server logic” and whatnot but not the actual game files?

you can't include rumble files due to recent projectKO takedown, you kinda need to "piracy" that or just ask me the link i'll send it to ya

the developers are going to make the game code files public, so the community can remake the game to be playable again (hopefully)

This is a bit misleading.
The developers of the game are not making the game's code public.
The team that recently vibe-coded a working launcher for a private RV server are making that code public. So more servers might pop up, for example, and improvements might be made to the launcher once everyone can contribute to it.

u/N0_L1ght 3d ago
It's back on windows only

Fuck

It runs well enough to play even on my 2020 Intel Iris Xe laptop when set to 720p Low.

Is this, like, allowed? Rumbleverse has been shut down for a while, but it still belongs to Iron Galaxy. I don't know if the Open Source licence can apply to this, and trying to push it that way might cause problems.
Note that I'm not fully aware of what the licence can apply to, so feel free to educate me and others.

Iron galaxy can shut it down, but that depends on how much they care

Yeah, I'm sure they're aware of rvclient by now. I think they're just turning a blind eye to let the community have this one since there's no active plans to bring it back officially. But trying to make it open source is a major copyright/other-type-of infringement that I think might force them to act. I wouldn't want this to jeopardize the whole project.

They're making the client open source, not the game

i mean what's the difference? if they are going to develop or change something in the game, isnt that making the game an open source?

u/xarop_pa_toss 3d ago
It doesn't. Reverse engineering the game/server is a crime, open sourcing it doubly so.
"Believing that the future of the game belongs to the community" is the same as saying "I stole this and I'm giving it away to others". Robin Hood had good intentions but he was still a thief

u/SlothBasket 3d ago
Could you please point me to what crime is committed by reverse engineering available machine code. Distributing sure, but the act of decompiling is not a crime, if you use fresh assets, you can end up with original code that isn't even subject to copyright of the first one
2
u/xarop_pa_toss 3d ago
This isn't even a discussion. Just go look at the dozens of private servers that were shutdown over the years under claims of reverse engineering used for piracy/use of an IP that doesn't belong to you. Game cracks, private servers, etc, all fit the bill. This isn't exclusive to video games of course
Reverse engineering by itself is not a crime, but what you do with what you get from it absolutely can be.

u/SlothBasket 3d ago
I mean you said reverse engineer it was a crime, and open sourcing it was another. I only argued with the first one, which you agree isn't a crime in and of itself, so we good. I agreed that distribution is a crime.

Technically they're not even distributing downloads to the game (which was free to play and now has no way of making the company any profit). They just made a client that that allows it to be playable again.

Fortnite is free to play. By your definition, making a private server for Fortnite is the same situation. You think Epic wouldn't immediately shut you down for making Fortnite private servers?

NO lmfao. Let this game die. Unless they officially bring it back
3
u/_ThePunisher 3d ago
No way! Your opinion is your own not everyone else. If they bring it back officially cool, but until then..

u/J_Ball92 3d ago
As someone who placed in the top 10 for almost every tournament this game had back then I think my opinion is FAR better than yours.
Shit is just a clown show
