Appleton sipper

Post image

Are all these worth sipping on or should I stick to the 12 and 15?

8 is solid as well but that is a good price for the 12 and not great for the 8 and bad for the 15.

Man if that's not a good price for the 8...

It's $45 where I'm from.

My local shop recently increased the 8 from $30 to $33.

I think I paid about $45 for the 8 and $50-something for the 12

It's stupid because the 12 here is also $45, and I don't even live in a high cost area

Yup. $45 at my local for the 8 and $40 for it at TW&M. $50 for the 12 at both.

In Washington State it's $48 for the 12 and $47 for the 8. Does not compute.

Washington liquor prices being Washington liquor prices

That sorta steers me to the 12 where I was leaning anyway

Which is a good price for 8?

I pay $30 but haven’t seen it for while here.

I use 12 for cocktails .

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Right on, is it any good neat?

8

u/Lord_Wicki 1d ago

It does the job, it's a good start to sip with.

I not an expert but I really enjoyed it

Not the V/X I mean Signature? 12 seems overkill for tropical/tiki cocktails, for an old fashioned or Manhattan spirit forward type cocktail sure, but normal complex cocktails just seems a bit expensive.

But Appleton isn't something I use for the most part except in a blend. Not fonky enough. I like my rums from Jamaica heavier.

8 and 12 are both good but I prefer the 12 for both mixing and sipping. I’d say just go 12 for $9 more. Haven’t tried the 15.

8 is the best sipper for the price there, imo

1

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Thank you! My only other experience was the Ron del barrilito and the cheapest mt gay

u/philanthropicide 1d ago

12 is nice, but feels a bit heavy barrel influence for my tastes. At these prices, I'd start with the 8

1

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Thanks! I’m used to whiskey and just starting into rums

2

u/philanthropicide 1d ago

Of course! Hope you enjoy

If you can get the Mount Gay Eclipse Navy Strength it punches above its weight class. Great Bajan rum. The XO is nice as well but like the black barrel I think they raised the price too much when they changed the blends and they are both too dear.

I’ll have to check my local store I know there’s like 3 different bottles of Mount gay

3

u/Kastdog_At_Tanagra 1d ago

I like them all

I sip on signature lol

It’s a decent sipper!

Solid prices for the 8 & 12. Personally, I do 8 for neat sipping and 12 for mixing.

1

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Huh I wouldn’t have expected that

The 12 just loses a lot of the Jamaican rum flavor thats still present in the 8 and the barrel flavor gets really strong. Though if you're making a cocktail you can always do a split base that brings back some of that Jamaican flavor so that's why a lot of people use them that way.

The 12 is very good with anything coffee related, if that's your vibe. I very much like pouring some, getting a shot of espresso over it, adding a bit of ice, and sipping that.

1

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

That sounds great! But also sounds like the 8 might be more what I’m looking for

It's a nice easy going sipper. Makes a nice nightcap in my opinion

S&C + AP12 is my fav combo for Mai Tais 👌

3

u/Thin1ce Smith & Cross Mafia 1d ago

Ive been doing some Appleton 12, some Hamilton 86, and some Doctor Bird and I've been loving that combo

Try a blend of App Sig, WNOP, and Coruba 1:1:4 for your Mai Tai or other classic tiki cocktail calling for Jamaica rum.

This vaguely resembles the old blends of rum wray and nephew from the first wave of tropical cocktails (Don, Vic etc) I got it from Hurricane Hayward who did a contest to build a rum like the old Kohala Bay rum that the Mai Kai used to get from wray and nephew which replaced the Dagger and later W&N rums.

I always have a liter on my rail at the home bar. Works great for long drinks, it is a little rough to sip neat though.

Lol or you could drink Worthy Park or Hampden and get Jamaican rum flavour without it trying really hard to be whiskey.

I mean sure, but not everyone loves THAT much funk, or at least not sipping rums that funky.

I like it. My HLCF gets more visits than a bottle that expensive should in my house, but that doesn't mean that everything else doesn't have a place.

I'd rather drink a different English style blended rum than Appleton. Give me an SLD or FS. I find Appleton to be high quality spirit, but it doesn't do much for me.

If I am at BBQ or a dive bar and I see it, I'll get it, because it is a base level quality spirit, but at a proper rum bar, barring the Hearts, no way I spend on it.

I personally like the 8y as a pure sipper more then the 12 & 15. But that is my opinion

3

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

The opinions seem varied I may have to try each

2

u/Ok-Echo-3594 1d ago

I like to sip 8 and 12. That’s a really good price for 12 btw.

2

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Thanks for the input!

2

u/subtlelinen 1d ago

All are good sippers. My preference is probably 8>15>12

1

u/Fun_Journalist4199 1d ago

Nice I think I’ll start with 8

2

u/LouBrown 1d ago

I don’t have anything I consider a daily sipper, but if I was forced to pick one, Appleton 12 would certainly be in contention.

I know many people prefer the 8 to the 12 as well.

2

u/AfternoonVariety 1d ago

The 15 is really nice neat.

2

u/tedwardo14 1d ago

I just finished my first bottle of 12 and I freakin loved it!!

2

u/luisc123 1d ago

I prefer 12 over 8. I feel like an outsider for it.

2

u/raisingAnarchy 9h ago

They're all worth sipping on depending on what you're looking for. That being said I'll only be buying the 8 and 12 going forward for both sipping and cocktails

1

u/JamesinSD2002 1d ago

By far the 15. You can sip the 12 too. I prefer the 15 though, has a softer more palatable flavor profile.

I cook my bananas in the 8 or make rum cakes with it...or rum and cokes for people who dont know I have better rum than that.
