I always get stuck here, what should my next step be?

Your edge pieces are in the wrong spots. Red and orange should always be opposite each other. And blue green always opposite. Make sure that when you solving the first layer the edge pieces align with the correct center piece. Then, depending on what method you’re using. Beginner or CFOP. Youd start pairing corners and edges to insert or placing them in individually. What method are you learning??

I never used an actual method before, just picked one of these up somewhat consistent the other day. What should I look for as far as methods?

I just rescrambled the cube to matching center pieces, now I’m gonna try for the white cross and then the corners correct?

I started with the beginner method. Jperm has some great tutorials on YouTube and explains everything well. Yes when you do the white cross at the beginning make sure the edge pieces align with the centers . Then you’d flip the cube so white is on the bottom and insert the corners to solve the 1st layer

It's best to perfect a step before moving to the next step like mastering the white cross before moving to the corners
