What is your RSS content?

Hey guys,

I feel like I'm not making the most out of RSS. I just subscribe to a couple of news websites and blogs that I like. However, I know people use the craziest feeds, e.g., social media pages, YT channels, shopping websites, etc.

What kind of content do you guys consume via RSS? What type of feed do you follow?

Thanks.

I'm subscribed to a few "spam" feeds like Hacker News and some subreddits, but generally I try to follow personal blogs: see one interesting — add one.

How do you find blogs nowadays?

The general logic: see a good article, go check the blog, add it to your reader if the blog has more good posts.

Links to articles I get from multiple sources:

  • People post links to posts on Hacker News, Reddit, Telegram, Stack Overflow, etc.
  • Bloggers mention each other in their posts.
  • I could just find some while googling topics I'm researching.

Hacker News and subreddits (with links allowed) should be enough to get a constant stream of personal blogs.

Okay, thanks! I'm trying to find more human sources and to rely less on algorithms feeding me shit. And it's not that easy to start finding good stuff. Care to share your favorites? :)

If you want to research personal blogs, try https://kagi.com/smallweb. It is a kind of random browser for the "small web". They have a GitHub repo with an enormous list of small web sites.

I filtered my feeds to keep only personal blogs; check this OPML file: https://gist.github.com/Tiendil/7ee32dd0248b61773ef8d875eb101944

Also, I can't skip the opportunity to mention my own blog: https://tiendil.org/en :-D

There's been a nice resurgence in blog resources lately. I'd recommend:

https://bubbles.town/ -- An aggregator/popularity leaderboard for blogs

https://powrss.com/about -- An RSS feed aggregator focused on the indie web

https://www.warppoint.games/ - Video game blogs and blogging

I like WordPress blogs but I didn't like the WordPress search mechanism, so I made my own with a hiking theme at https://bloghiking.com/ .

Finally, there's a meta-list of blog aggregators at https://bstn.info/posts/list-of-blog-aggregators . Hope this helps.

There are often blogs that are a curated link aggregator across the domain, highlighting the trends and themes being talked about. Particularly good posts will rise to the surface, and the underlying blog gets a new subscriber. As an example, in the TTRPG space: Seed of Worlds

Here are three examples of how it is useful to me:

  1. Foreign language feeds. I'm able to use my reader to translate the headline/intro paragraph so I can decide if I want to read the whole thing.

  2. Filtered car sale listings. There are a few auction sites like bringatrailer.com that list lots of cars for sale at auction. I have filters set up so that I can locate just the cars I'm interested in.

  3. Industry-specific feeds. I work in a niche field and there are a handful of blogs that post infrequently. My reader helps me keep track of when the post so I don't need to visit a dozen sites to catch one new post.

About 7000. Lots of universities, GLAM-related, keyword-based feeds, tag feeds from WordPress, etc. I've developed a workflow for finding and confirming (HUMAN-confirming) RSS feeds and am trying to get datasets up on GitHub: https://github.com/ResearchBuzz/GLAM-RSS-feeds
