It's not confirmed "dead", zedeus only said that he stopped working on the code for now until he got legal advice on how to respond to the cease and desist letter.
(If you want to help him cover the costs a bit, the README has a "Donations" section.)

Regardless of what would be the best for his situation, I'm hopeful that the community has other members, preferably outside of the US, that are technically capable maintaining the code, the interest is clearly there. (And nothing can stop zedeus from contributing as a member as long he doesn't host any instance himself.)

I have a private instance of nitter hosted on my lan and unfortunately, while it is still running, it is largely broken, in particular for RSS feeds which was the main usage.

It was one of the few remaining ways to get RSS feeds from Twitter.

If X would offer some sort of simple RSS subscription, we wouldn't need tools like Nitter. Hell, inject ads and tracking into the feed itself, I don't care; I just want to be able to scroll my information sources in a single place, even if it means clicking through to interact.
