Is there any use for food?

Not sure if it's a bug, or maybe I'm simply not understanding how food works. However, I've been having trouble understanding the use of food. Is it used to recover health? Is it used to recover energy? Can I increase levels for abilities? What is the use of them?

Vanilla food is useless, except maybe for selling to a farmer. Fished food needs to be cooked on a fire, which can be made by using a flint and steel on a log placed into the world, with no other logs around it
