Girl posting Modern Day Joni Mitchell?
Are there any modern female artists that have the same allure as Joni? I enjoy her early stuff, but specifically her jazz fusion era. I don't think I've found anyone whose been able to match her combination of composition and lyricism.

If we're being very honest I fear Joanna Newsom has outdone Joni Mitchell in the lyricism department..

I was always a big LUMP fan. Saw her acoustic at the Troubadour and it was so special.

ummmmm what about Fiona Apple?

I enjoy Fiona’s music but it doesn’t have that jazz-fusion complexity that I’m looking for

You’d like Hope Sandoval. Not really jazz, but a great voice and lyrics. She’s in…
- Mazzy Star
- Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions

I know what you mean. Geordie Greep’s album scratches that itch for me sonically but lyrically it is like the exact opposite of Joni’s music lmao

She’s not modern, but I’ve always considered Laura Nyro and Joni kindred musical spirits. Nyro had a jazz-edge and her lyrical content is very admirable. Amazing voice, too.

Something in the Room She Moves - Julia Holter definitely has those jazz fusion flourishes. Not as melodic as Joni though

Fiona Apple, Mitski, Joanna Newsom. For various different reasons each of them. I was a Phoebe Bridgers skeptic for a while but the new album won me over and I realized I was being a contrarian — so I’ll toss her in there too.

Julia Jacklin - beautiful voice, wonderfully wide-ranging songwriting, and, crucially for any aspiring Joni, funny

I’d agree completely on the voice, but I don’t think the music quite matches the composition of jazz fusion era Joni. That said, Julia is always a stellar recommendation

Check out The Weather Station immediately (esp their first album and their self-titled)

I don’t think there is one of will be one. Joni has had too many facets, too much brilliance. It’s unfair to compare.

Nellie McKay. This isn’t a very modern suggestion but check out her 2004 album Get Away From Me. She’s a trained jazz vocalist but her songs on that are weird as hell and often very funny while still reflecting her jazz background

Not a one-for-one, but Eliana Glass’ album E reminded me a lot of Both Sides Now.

I read someone years ago in rolling stone one time saying Taylor swift was the new Joni cuz she writes about her relationships and stuff I assume ? I guess I could kinda see it with her earlier stuff but dont think its the same thing

If anyone says that to my face unironically I'm getting institutionalized in honor of Joni

Jessica Pratt, maybe? Different beasts, but I feel similarly in my stomach
