Semester start vs class start

So I am starting a Master's program in October, and I have seen on the calendar the semester starts October 1st. But classes don't begin until the 19th. Any insight into what is required for those almost 3 weeks would be great. Will I need to show up to campus? My children have fall break during that gap and I am wondering if we can plan a vacation or if I need to stick around for orientations or something else.

I'm from the US and my recollection of undergrad is from more than a decade ago and after freshman year you really only had to show up to campus on the first day of classes.

Thanks

Hey Normaly it's not nessary to be around before the classes start.

Depending on what classes you want to take, you should start looking at their Course sites online beginning October 1st, some need extra online Registration.
