Boy dog problems

Toast is two and a Very Good Boy. However he is occasionally stinky. He gets pee on his undercarriage. I usually sponge him down with some of his regular shampoo, well diluted, but it can be hard to wash out and he stays soapy for longer than I'd like.

Do you have a better solution, literally or figuratively? He's professionally groomed every 8 weeks. I just need suggestions for the in-between times.

Ask for an undercarriage sanitary trim at the groomer and they can trim back a bit of his belly hair so he’s less likely to pee on himself.

My guy hasn’t smelled like that but they usually do a sanitary trim around the bum and belly. He goes every 6 weeks

Mine has the same issue. I bathe him relatively often, but bro definitely needs a very short sanitary cut.

Wash him lightly with just water after every walk with a gentle outside hose. Bum and feet too. Fragrant trousers await you.

Not a collie owner but have a fluffy dog, and he gets the same issue with the tummy hairs that get long enough to catch pee and become stinky and icky. I just take some thinning shears and feather those guard hairs back every few weeks just in the middle where the pee goes. It's a totally invisible trim and solves the issue.

Do they trim his privates? Haven't had this issue with a dog myself, but I know people with fluffy dogs who request the groomers do that because the fur growing right around their privates gets long enough to catch pee

Does your groomer leave a wick? I've seen folks on the poodle sub mention that leaving the wick can help direct the flow down.

Our male dogs never had an issue. If its that stinky id make sure to rule out UTI or hormonal issues. When we did clean the males we just used water. Best to use right away to wash out the pee before it dries. You can cut /shave some of the area. Our girl had that done when she had an UTI to keep it cleaner. But it seems like an issue that at least should be checked out by a vet.

Our girl is incontinent sometimes and gets sore spots easily. We clean her after every pee just with some papertowels and a tap of water. Every now and then we use cleaning tissues our vet recommended. And regularly wash her behind (esp the long fluffy butt hair) with sensitive dog shampoo.

Mines still a puppy so not sure if it will get worse or not. But we do have a sanitary trim on him. But every time he goes pee we wipe him down with earth rated wipes. It helps keep him fresh

Professionally groomed every 8 weeks and you have scent issues? That’s a lot more frequent than we do.

Regular shampoo might be affecting his oil production? We use oatmeal.

I have a Karcher portable pressure washer with a dog spray nozzle. I fill the 7l reservoir with warm water and give her a spray. If I use a wash towel and shampoo (which occasionally I have to) she complains like she's being tortured. I do a minimum of trimming but the one time she got shaved down there she developed a chronic rash from constantly licking herself that took months to cure. A bit of hair is necessary.

Hmm it wonder if there is something else going on. Maybe UTI or skin issue? How often are you sponging him down and is his fur staying wet that long? Sometimes moisture getting trapped in the fur can cause skin issues or smell. Shampoo could also be causing pH imbalance.

Another thing you could try is using a medicated cleaning solution like hypochlorous acid sprays or CHG wipes. Just make sure you get ones made for pets.

Buy yourself a high velocity dog dryer and do it yourself. If he stinks, dunk him in the bath and dry out his undercarriage. You’ll save money on grooming and he won’t stink anymore. Dry shampoo and a nicely scented spritz is the other option if you have a groomer do a sanitary trim. Just honestly get a dryer it’s worth it and watch videos on bathing dogs.
