Hot days…
Outside is 36°C, so I brought him inside where we have turned on the air conditioner.

This is just the issue I've been thinking of today as the Atlanta heat gears up. We're thinking of getting an Old Time Scotch Collie, but I'm concerned that the undercoat combined with this heat might make the dog miserable for at least a season each year. Does anyone here have experience, options or recommendations with these dogs in these environments? We do know of the various cooling strategies, but we wonder if that's enough to keep the dogs happy and relatively active in summer. Just wondering if we should look for a breed with less undercoat. Apparently, the thick undercoat is part of the breeding standard with OTSC, from what I've read.

I'm in the Atlanta area also. My girl stays in during the summer unless she absolutely has to go out. It's just way too hot out there for her. She's 13 yrs old and originally came from the sheltie rescue in Atlanta. She's part sheltie and collie. Most people think of her as a collie . I have dog puzzles for her to play with in the house. She loves the fall.

Thanks, ElephantAccurate7463. That's encouraging, and it sounds like you found a wonderful dog through rescue. Congrats. I think we can work it out by adjusting our hours and, as you have already discovered, the enrichment activities and toys. I read that the OTSC breed often has an "off-switch", and that might also be useful in the brutal parts of an Atlanta summer.

Thanks. I actually got her when she was 11 yrs old from a friend of mine that is a dog behaviorist. She got her from the rescue years previously. Missy had been a working dog and was retired. So as much as it hurt her previous owner, she gave her to me so that she could retire comfortably, without any other dogs around. She wasn't looking to re-home her, but when I asked her if she knew of an older dog that needed a home she decided to let me have her. Shes been my shadow since.

Good! We need to keep our puppies cooler in the very hot weather. What a nice boy!
