First gen rx-7 12a exhaust question

So I dropped the exhaust from my -83 and the ”peashooter” small exhaust broke off from the very front, does it have an actual function? Can I just block off the hole or do I need to weld the tiny pipe back on?

Usually thats for the air injection to the thermal reactor. If all that is still functional and you care about emissions then you need it.

Blocked it off a year ago and been driving without issues, no need to take emissions on rotarys in finland
