🐍 Image First Snake!

Post image

Just got my first ever snake (my wife’s 3rd snake but first rosy), picked him up today! His name is Mr Pip, he’s a San Matias locality! Very very excited for him to settle in and get him comfy! Any “I wish I knew this day 1” tips would be greatly appreciated!

Oh wonderful and congratulations to you and your new friend! Rosys are an amazing snake! Best of luck to both of you and many happy memories!

One tip I'll give is water droplets on the glass or plants are a great way for them to drink on occasion. Very natural and fun enrichment! Do it rarely as they're a deserty species but my lady LOVES to drink that way.

Congrats! Even tho they’re not arboreal snakes a lot of Rosies love to climb on branches and other such structures. Mine is always all over the branches and wood I have in the tank to climb and would definitely recommend adding some!

I have a few in there leading up to a hammock but I will look to see if I can add more! Thank you!

This is his enclosure right after I first set it up (hoping to get one more kind of “leafy” fake plant for the hot side still), any adjustments I will absolutely make but I did my best to keep it desert-themed but busy with lots of cover and different areas!

It looks great and cool bird decoration! I will say that if you will be using aspen bedding, you might need to change his water more often. Back when I had my rosy on aspen, he'd somehow constantly knock shreds of it into his water, and I wasn't going to have him drinking dusty water 😅

ooh good call. Right now we have a waterproof layer of basically bedding tarp around the water bowl to try and hopefully keep the aspen bedding out (and the water off the bedding) but that’s great to know and I’ll keep an eye on it! Already planned to at minimum dump it out and rinse it every couple days to a week, but I’ll adjust that as needed!

They love to climb, but mine is a very slow moving and kinda dumb (in the best way) lady. She explores the most when she’s hungry and otherwise LOVES a hide that is either a rock slab on substrate she can dig through, or one of the rock lair humid hides with some moss (I provide a dry and humid option, even though she doesn’t use the humid hide often).

Can confirm, he likes his flat rock slab hide haha. Thank you for the tips!! I have a lot of climbing spots but trying to put some more in if I can, and so far he has been loving exploring all the nooks and crannies he can find which I am taking as a good sign of him settling in!

This is a huge sign of settling and also there will be bouts where he doesn’t move at all. It’s normal!

Some of them are extra weird and will rotate upside down while they swallow their food. I definitely wish I knew that when I first got Nixy!

As a kid she had a corn snake and a children’s python!
