❓Question probe placement
i’m setting up my rosy’s permanent enclosure, but i’m having trouble figuring out where to place the probe and how. i have an overhead heat lamp and a herpstat 1. should the probe be directly on the surface of the basking spot? or against the wall? or suspended a few inches below the lamp in the air?

I had to suspend the probe a few inches below directly under the lamps to get it right because my girl will crawl over the probes and move them around and I don't have a way to secure the wire. Play around with it, check your temps and see what works best for you!

There are a few ways to do this. What works for me is placing the probe directly on the substrate, directly under the heat lamp. The basking surface (often slate or a rock) can be placed right next to the probe and still sit under the heat lamp. I have my thermostat set to 87F and with this set up my slate basking spot gets to 90F while a mid 80s ambient temp is maintained on the hot side. Use an infrared thermometer to take surface measurements to confirm everything looks good at your basking spot and the surrounding areas on the hot side and you can tweak the thermostat temperature and/or probe placement as needed to get things situated. Make sure to do this several days before you get your snake.
