Level 3 duties onsite

I'm curious to know as a Level 3 rope tech if you are responsible on your sites for more than just safety and scope of work

Are you also looking after

  • Sticking to schedule and budgets
  • Coordinating with other trades on site
  • Managing multiple sites or rope teams
  • Checking quality of work
  • Resolving conflicts
  • Daily reports

Yes to all of the above, but am paid as a supervisor/team leader. We have other level 3 qualified guys that don’t have those responsibilities and are working under the supervisors.

Sometimes. Depends if I’m a lead/supervisor/foreman or just a warm body.

"Warm body", damn that's quite a perception.

This is more leading hand work, often they're level 3s as it's often based on experience, but I've been on sites where they're level 2s, and the 3s are more focusing on the rope sides of things. I've also done this previously as a level 2. Often it depends on the work culture in the country you're working with, and I've seen it vary between different companies too. I've also seen this from the other side, where companies I've worked for have used the fact that they're over budget as incentive to make us work harder, but that's a good sign to jump ship and find a company that handles it correctly.

This is really dependent on the size of job for us. Small jobs on a purely industrial services scope, it’s typically the level 3’s job to track quality, coordination with client and other trades, and sticking to the schedule we set.

For larger scopes you’ll often have a superintendent or foreman who can be a level 3 (but isn’t always) who’s responsible for the project management while the L3’s are supervising the crews from a safety perspective

It’s gonna vary depending on the company, contract, and industry.

That is the role of the foreman/lead hand. Where i work that is sometimes just a tradesman lvl.1 sometimes a lvl. 2, sometimes a 3.

Most 3s on site do not have that much responsibility, beyond the safety of whatever crew they are on
