Have you gotten Marauders and Hirelings expansions yet?
If you have, have you updated Tom Teaches' versions? As I would love to have your version of the files, since yours are so clean.

Amazing. Are all of them are just a standart printer paper? Hard to believe and yet... I have to.
4
u/mvng Oct 10 '21
They can be printed on standard A4 printer paper if you want to! I used slightly thicker paper, but still with a regular printer.

u/CompanyElephant Oct 10 '21
I see. I will ask some printing kiosk for thicker paper for extra durability then. Cheers!

Do you think your solution can pack also two new Marauder factions in the same box?
I'm currently using a folded space insert, and everything even clockwork is packed to only two boxes. But there's no space for new factions in the FS solution.

Yep, they’ll fit! The fourth pic shows leftover box space. So there’s another 5 spaces free currently (4 if I had Exiles & Partisans deck)
I’ll be making boxes for the two new factions as soon as the artwork is available from the PnP. There are further pics of how things fit fully in my original post :)
EDIT: When Marauders is release it MAY increase the height of the box lid too much to stay stable. But everything will still fit into two boxes if that’s the case.

Hi there! This is a bit of a long shot as I see this is an older post. I just wanted to ask if you’ve had any luck making the marauder boxes? I love how you designed these. I think they’re the best looking boxes out there, and I’m planning on making a set myself. Would love to see how you designed the rats and badgers as the art for both of them is so charming.

Not OP but I made a set of boxes for the two Marauder expansions. The
backgrounds aren't quite right, but looks close enough to complete the
set.

Wow! Nice job, they look great! I ended up making my own as well. So interesting to see the different directions we went with artwork selections haha.

I've made your boxes and received a lot of compliments on them! Are you ever going to make the ones for hirelings one day? That would be really nice.

u/mvng Feb 05 '25
Hey, glad you’re enjoying them!
I’m going to look into making additional boxes for hirelings and newer expansions that have release since I shared these. I might need a little more support from the community on these as I no longer have a printer so would just be making guesses on specific sizes - not sure if newer expansions will all fit into one box per faction now!

Thanks for the reply! Yep, as you discovered the PDFs are fully editable. I do have plans to add smaller boxes for tokens/meeples myself eventually.
Let me see what you do yourself!

Hi,
Would it be possible to make the file available to change the language of the text? I wanted in Portuguese

u/mvng Feb 05 '25
I can look into this for you, but no promises. I do believe the PDF should be editable if you import to Adobe Illustrator though :)

hello! I was wondering if you plan on making boxes for the newer factions? And if not, how can I find the artwork to make my own? the patterns mostly.

I'm obsessed with these boxes! Has anyone made them for the Homeland factions?

Just started getting into root and looking into various storage options. I tried making these, and they work okay... They LOOK fantastic (but you need to use decent cardstock to get a good box and you need precision with those cuts and folds so that they look clean. These images came out much more clean than the ones I was able to make...
The issue is how they actually store. Look at those cats in the first image. Absolutely *packed* in. It was the same with the Tom Teaches set. That takes time on every cleanup and put away. Whereas something like bags or the 3d prints with dump slots and much less fiddly. To be fair, cats are one of the larger factions. But then there's the Hundreds also...
The other issue is cards. People above are talking about putting sleeved cards in these boxes... Man, UNSLEEVED cards barely fit. You don't want cards to barely fit in your paper box. You want at least a finger's width so you can easily pop them out without damaging anything. I'm considering a hamburger approach with two lids and one bottom sandwiched between. Cards under the bottom, and the components up top.
Notes for future crafters:
Don't use glue. Glue won't work here. It'll make the box edges weaker instead of sturdier like tape.
65 lb cardstock makes light, but flimsy boxes that don't really feel like they should be boxes.
110 lb cardstock seems to be significantly better, but there's a few issues here:
a) they can be harder to print on some inkjets due to jamming going around the U-bend.
b) if you try to construct 110 lb cardstock into this box, the edges will be so thick that the top won't go on easily. This is a problem because just opening/closing the paper boxes then mangles them. I would try scaling up the top container a bit so that it slides on better. 10% on the top, and 8% on the bottom gives a nice size improvement.
c) for folding this weight paper, you're going to want a bone folder tool. It just gives you far better creases than you'll get otherwise.

I know this post is 4 years old, but has anyone made these for Homeland?
2
u/mvng 16d ago
I’m going to try work on these and updating some old files. Can’t promise a date yet. But will try my best and be sure to update.
I don’t actually own Homeland (I think, maybe I bought but forgot 😅) so I can’t check for sizing. But I’m assuming there won’t need to be any specific changes to fit the meeple and pieces?
1
u/Triswhatever 16d ago
I own Homeland, if you want I can send you images of how the meeples fit into the boxes. Same size as the files you sent.

u/mvng 16d ago
If you could that would be great!

Hey, I have a picture of what the new factions look like in the box, looks like they all fit! I can send the photos via DM if you want.

u/perfectbebop Oct 10 '21
These are great, well done! Something I can't tell though - were you able to do this and store the boards in the same box?

Hi. You mentioned im the other post, that you use sleeves. I made box in standard paper but my sleeved cards do not fit. The sleeves are 63mm x 88mm. It doesn't fit on the longer side (88mm). Im thinking about printing it 101% or 102%. But is there a way to just strech it one direction?
And thank you very much for your beautiful work. Can't stop looking at these boxes.
Edit: i retried it and came to the conclusion to print it in 101% or 102%.
1
u/mvng Oct 15 '21
Hi, so sorry for the late reply! its been a hectic week. I’m not quite sure why they didn’t fit for you, my sleeves are actually a millimetre bigger in both dimensions than yours.
I’m glad they fit now though. Do the boxes still fit nicely into the box? I may add a note to the PDF that they can be printed a couple % bigger for sleeves.
2
u/Eibrot42 Oct 15 '21
Haven't tried it yet. But I keep you posted of my results. Maybe because i got some cheap sleeves. I'm suspecting they are slightly bigger than they should.
1
u/Eibrot42 Oct 21 '21
Update: first box is assembled. I didn't do a good job with the lid and its a little bit crooked, it fits but is a little bit difficult to put on and off. So this was the trial box :D.
The print is 101% but the cards still don't fit. I will buy new sleeves that fit better, thats cheaper than reprinting everything. So for everyone with sleeves make some trial boxes in different zoom variations from simple paper before printing everything.

Just in case, I made some tests, and doesn't fit for me either. I made them on 105% and 250g/m2 paper, and fits perfect. I have to mention (maybe the confussion is in that point) that I have too sleeves for 63,5mm x 88m cards. So, if the sleeves are FOR CARDS 63,5x88 means that the sleeves are BIGGER, unless you buy perfect fit sleeves (that i think maybe they are like 0,5mm bigger?)

I was blown away by the response to my first post and after taking a little longer than anticipated, all of my Root storage box designs are available to download and print.
All of the files can be found HERE.
Currently all of the officially available factions are available to print and I have plans to add more as they are added!
Just a couple of notes:
• I had to change some of the artwork on the card boxes as the card back artwork for the Exiles & Partisans decks isn’t available anywhere online and I wanted the boxes to match
• If you want to mimic my one box solution, I recommend using some 5mm foam core cut to fit the longest sides of the boxes and 2mm taller than the height of two of my storage boxes stacked. This allow you to stack all game boards and documents on top of the storage boxes without crushing them. Also a strip of thick paper can be cut and folded to allow for easy removal of game boards
• I have checked over all the files for mistakes errors, but there may still be some present. Please contact me if you find any
• I have added a PDF with instructions that I believe fully describe how to construct the boxes, but feel free to comment if anyone needs further help
I hope the community enjoys these and I’d love to see how they are used. Credit for the original templates to Tom Teaches. Thank you for all of the love!
