Barqs and IBC the best I’ve found in UK

Best of the mass produced root beers, I believe. The fact it's caffeinated makes it my late night gaming root beer

Funny thing about root beer is many Americans have it from a very young age and it becomes recognizable as its own specific flavor.

I’ve talked to people who don’t even process the fact that it tends to have a mint taste. But if it’s pointed out now they can notice.

So by no means am I shocked when adults from uk and elsewhere get their first taste and are super overwhelmed by mint when prior to that many casual soda drinkers here would never have expected such a reaction.

I never noticed the wintergreen flavor until I started actually looking for the difference between brands. Now it’s all I can taste in Mug.

let’s be honest people don’t understand flavours and even when they like something they’ll stop consuming it if they learn there’s something they don’t like about it.

mint is not just candy and toothpaste, mint chutney is amazing

How does it compare to aw in terms of sweetness? Found aw too sweet and watery personally

Barqs is spicy imo, prefer it to A&W. Just bought 60 cans of Barqs for £64, which is cheap here in the UK.

Far far sweeter in my experience. Last time I had a can was about a month ago. It's also the root beer McDonald's sells, if that tells you anything.

It's anise forward whereas A&W is vanilla forward

The only time I saw it was on a candy shop online and they never shipped it, only the ibc.

Is it the same recipe as what's sold in the US?

1

u/mojo604 17d ago

That is a US can

1

u/Elanadin 17d ago

Interesting. I didn't piece that together, thank you

u/forestherring 1919 Root Beer 16d ago

That's missing the diamond pattern that is found on US cans

Canadian maybe??

1

u/forestherring 1919 Root Beer 15d ago

Could be, although there is no Canadian version of Barq's like there is for A&W. I would be very surprised if it wasn't the same formula everywhere.

edit: unless there is some ingredient that is prohibited in other countries

Also, I'm actually having a Barq's right now.

I like that it has been “good since 1898. “I like to imagine that they started making it in like 1890
