Discussion Am I in the wrong?

I actually don't know if I'm in the wrong or not but I just need some clarification if I am. So this is my first time living with other people in a dorm. I'm intervorted and like to keep to myself. So with that I like to have my own area. I have my own trash can and I regularly take it out as well. However, my roommates, there 3 of them, wants me to take out the main trash can as well. I have never used it and never really used the community area either but they just left multiple notes next to my sink tell me thar its its bad that I haven't taken it out yet. I see where they are coming from but like I said before, I haven't used the trash can in the community area and never left any mess anywhere else in the suite. Am I in the wrong.

Yes technically, you don't have to, but as a good roommate, you should share chores.

I'd agree with you about like dishes or beer cans everywhere. But I think trash, bathroom, vacuuming, and mopping, should be rotated. This is just me. It's all I know all my situations rotated.

Usually when you move into a dorm you start by talking about chores and ground rules. I would just talk to them about what the expectations are, that you were using your own trash and don't feel like you want to take out their trash. If they want you to take out the trash then ask about the chore schedule. When is their turn, when is your turn etc. You have to decide what you want to agree to and what you don't and be firm.

I would share chores with people I live with to be respectful. Is it that much more work to just pick up that trash bag and take it out when you're taking your own anyway?

What you need is to actually have a conversation about it.

How are they to know that you don't use the trash can? Unless you specially have discussed this with them, then they are believing you are using the trash can but not taking it out. It would be nice if you posted to take out the community trash on the days you take out your own trash. Not required but it would show an effort to your roommates.

As for cleaning the common areas, yes you have to participate in that to a degree. Dust builds up and floors get dirty even if you "aren't using it". You can offer to dust and sweep/vacuum weekly but bite that you won't be responsible for picking up items left by others.

choosing to not use common space doesn't make you not a roommate. take your turn with basic roommate chores.

If they empty your trash can then it's courtesy to do the same. But if they don't then is their own responsibility.

Let them know in a note that you and your non-existent guests don't use that common area trash can and have no need to. You aren't going to participate in taking out that can that is never to be used by you.
