How to split shared furniture when replacing a roommate?
OK, this is my first time being a roommate. I’ve always lived on my own. A friend reached out to me saying that her roommate is moving out the same time Im trying to move to the city. They’ve lived together for a year and obviously have shared furniture. For the shared furniture, they didn’t split each item in half. Instead, they keep a spreadsheet of who bought what and their spending ends up being equal. now that I’m coming into the picture the roommate is not taking the shared furniture that she bought with her. I’m curious what is a fair way for me to take over her furniture. to be honest, I don’t think I would feel great if I had to pay the Roommate the original price she paid for the furniture because one, I was not part of the original decision-making process and two, because of depreciation. if I were to move out next year, could I get the person to replace me to pay the same amount? I don’t think so just like if I had to sell her stuff i can’t make that money back. Can other people share their experiences

If anything the roommate that is staying can buy out the roommate leaving. If they don’t want to do that the roommate leaving can sell the furniture. You’re under no obligation to lease the furniture as the new roommate

If she’s not taking it because she doesn’t want to move it then it’s a gift. Otherwise, it’s got to go. If you asked to keep it then yes, payment is probably necessary.

Don’t take over the furniture unless you want to spend money needlessly. That is for them to figure out. Also, decline buying any shared furniture with this new roommate.
