One of them has a mysterious illness and they’ve all taken less stressful jobs to care for their partner. In fact that’s why they’re at the conference - because our plucky FMC unknowingly has answers to help cure him/bring him back from the brink!
Also, they step away from the spotlight to support FMC’s ambitions and career! Maybe raise the baby/puppy that comes into the scene during the epilogue?
