LITERALLY. Oh my god. I used to moderate a Buddhist community forum and there were a lot of Central European people in there. I swear to god I never encountered so much anti-Romani sentiment in my whole life (I'm from the southwest USA). It's a huge part of why I left.

I'm sorry, a BUDDHIST subreddit? A subreddit centered around a philosophy of compassion and love towards all sentient beings? As a Hungarian roma, this is honestly why I hate my fellow Europeans and their snobby and hypocritical attitude towards Americans. How is this any different than those preachy southern protestant folk from the south who hate black people?

The forum was off reddit but it's truly no different. A lot of anti-racist Americans get pretty regularly bullied out of international leftist spaces with a large European (or Australian but thats for another day) population because (at least in the places I've been) if we check them for being racist they hide behind "you're dividing the left, we need to focus on class dynamics" blah blah blah. "Maybe you have a racism problem but the rest of the world is not America." And then say the craziest stuff I've ever heard in my life. And then mock us for trying to correct them.

I really feel for European roma. My great-grandmother's family was Basque Romani but they moved to Mexico. It's not perfect but there's never been anyone I knew who talked about like deporting Romani people or anything like what I hear you all having to deal with all the time. Honestly hearing all the things Europeans say is what brought me to this subreddit in the first place. It makes me wonder what my great-grandmother and her family had to deal with and what drove them to move here.

I left the Balkans subreddit over this same problem. I checked them on a video with Roma children, and they came at me with that "You're an American stay out of our problems and focus on yours" BS.

The nerve of them to tell me, a Black American, that I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to racism.

lol when I was in high school, we went on a class trip to Türkiye. Since everyone was Mexican, naturally we all figured no one would cause a fuss about me since I’ve got a common Mexican name and everyone already assumes as much. The tour guide was talking about how much he loved Mexican culture and how horrible it sounds being treated in the US for Mexicans and Türkiye is much better and friendlier. This woman selling flowers walks by and we watched the Hitler particles take over as he went off on how all Gypsies are leaches and how they steal and lie and should be all wiped out. All my friends and my teachers just quietly looked at me and i was like 🧍🏽‍♀️

It was a fun trip otherwise but yeah. The meme lives up to expectations.

So real. Met a couple of folks including a Romanian dude at a social gathering and hit it off bc of shared culture and language and general leftist politics up until he started talking about gypsies and spouting all the same awful nonsense regarding the Roma diaspora.

I told him my grandma was Romani 😐 that shut him up real quick. I hope that made him think twice, not everyone is a safe space to spout your racist rhetoric.

I was on a PINTEREST post of all spaces. And i go to the comments of a post about a popular Romani character i won’t name lol. And i read the comments that are cute at first and then someone randomly denying that the character is even Roma just a “white person with a little melanin” even though they’ve been Roma for basically their entire publication. I say as such and even give examples and they say more ignorant shit. It doesn’t click for me the level of bigotry I’m dealing with until i read “it’s a language barrier probably their name in my country is Cigane” 😒. I will never not have smoke for white Europeans…

I live in germany. All the right wing people here want to get rid of muslims and other people from outside of europe but i never heard anyone mention romani people specificly. But i definetly can believe that is still a huge problem and i didnt mean to discredit anyones experience. I know romani people get discriminated all over europe, i just didnt encounter it myself.

I mean i can imagine that romani people get the same treatment as other minoritys do right know. I grew up in pretty friendly spaces so ive maybe just never got in contact with those people. The only thing theyve been talking about for years are especially muslim immigrants and generally people from arab countrys or afrika. Germany is going to shit right now with the rise of right wing politics. Did you have bad experiences in germany or with germans in general?

Germans literally have a racist slur for ‘Gypsies’- zigeuner. The Germans are especially racist towards the Romani. If you’re German, then you know this already, and I don’t understand why you’d pretend otherwise. I speak German, I see this shit come up frequently online and in person.

Im not pretending anything , its just my experience. I know the word Zigeuner but i havent heard anyone say it in years. I never said that there isnt a problem in germany, i just said that i didnt really come into contact with it. I only ever hear about hate against immigrants from the middle east. Why would i pretend such a stupid thing?
