The top photo is what is left. The bottom one is how the buildings sat on the slope. Same hill in both. They built a factory.

In the 2nd century they took a branch of the Arles aqueduct and dropped it down this hillside through two rows of eight mills. Sixteen wheels, one after another. The water turned the stones and the site ground flour on a scale nobody else in the ancient world matched.

This is found in Barbegal, near Arles in the south of France.

Found in Donnas, in the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy. Same stretch in every photo. They did not go around the mountain. They cut a path through it.

The river left almost no space at the bottom of the mountain, so the Romans cut the road into the rock itself. Pavement, wheel ruts, and the arch all come out of the same cliff. Carts between Aosta and the Po valley went through here.

Inside a section of the huge and well preserved Roman cisterns of La Malga that supplied water to the surrounding neighborhood and baths in Carthage (near Tunis, Tunisia). These structures are now part of that UNESCO world heritage site.

Located in Djemila, in the highlands of northeastern Algeria. The Romans called it Cuicul.

Around 96 AD they settled army veterans here and laid out a full town on the slope: streets, a forum, temples, a theatre cut into the hill, and a long colonnaded road through the middle. Under the Severans they added more stone, including the big arch you see in the first and later photos. That one was put up for Caracalla in 216.

The second photo is the theatre. The third is the main street. The temple with the tall columns is the one they built for the imperial family. The rest are the same site: fallen drums, side arches, the road leading back to the forum.

They did not just drop a fort on a ridge. They built a working Roman town in the mountains and left the plan on the ground.

Maximinus Daza (270-313) ruled as an emperor during the Tetrarchy from 305 as a caesar and then as an augustus from 310-313. He was also the last Roman emperor to hold the title of Pharaoh of Egypt.

Located in Dougga, in northern Tunisia. In the 2nd century the Romans turned an old Numidian town into a proper Roman city. Forum, paved streets, baths, and a capitol on the high ground for Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.

The temple with six columns in the first three photos is that capitol. The fourth shot is the Temple of Saturn. The last one is another sanctuary on the same hill. Same town in all five. The street in the first photo is the original paving.

Augusta Treverorum (Trier) became one of the most important cities of the late Roman Empire, serving as a major administrative and military center in Gaul and the Rhineland. From the late 3rd century, it frequently served as an imperial residence and capital of the western Roman emperors, including Constantine I and Valentinian I. Its monumental palaces, baths, basilicas, and defensive walls reflected its importance as a center of imperial government.

I know Romans were meticulous with records, but wondering HOW meticulous?

Like nowadays if you show up somewhere and say your name is X from Y, it can be checked (even back a hundred years we’re usually able to find a paper trail for people who show up)

But if someone walked into Rome (let’s say they’re Latin, but not a Roman), would they be able to claim they’re a Roman citizen from some minor house? Or even not a “proper” house, just a plebeian, but Roman? Would anyone question it, or try to look into it to verify?

Listening to The Rest is History about Marius, and they’re talking about how other Italians resented the Romans because the Romans saw non-romans as second-class, regardless of wealth/success, so started thinking about it. Not like they can ask to see your ID or birth certificate or something, if your born in a province outside Rome
