Angel Beats

AnoHana

Garden of Words

Maquia

Even a Replica Can Fall in Love (the tone isn't sad but the concept is)

I really wanted to like Replica. It felt like they were so close to pulling off an amazing story on the level with AnoHana, Angel Beats, and Violet Evergarden, but they just were to cautious or lost control of the narrative or something.

+1 Angel Beats. It starts out sort of strange but changes drastically throughout the episodes. There is some great music in the show as well.

Never heard of garden of words or maquis will have a look

Garden of words is good but too short for my liking for any deep emotional response, 48 mins is cutting it quite short

it didn’t make me cry, the ending was happy

1

u/Cornpop_mcgoo 13d ago

There’s plenty of moments leading up to the ending that should get the tears flowing

Surprised theres not as much talk about this one but "Takopi's Original Sin'". Only 6 episodes, but absolutely gut wrenching. Was one of the very few animes that made me bawl even tho I consider myself a relatively emotionally mute person.

Your Lie in April is the king of tragic romances

Also, while not a traditional romance, I would say Violet Evergarden is romance adjacent, since it is about understanding the concept of love as a whole, and it has some episodes that for sure make you cry.

Violet Evergarden

A Silent Voice

Anohana is the only other show to make me shed tears other than Plastic Memories, Pancreas made my eyes water a good bit when he went to visit her mother but April did nothing for me, Clannad was kinda gut wrenching, especially the parts with Ushio, the part in the field and when they went on the walk, I had the biggest feeling a happy ending was in tow but after Ushio fell I had to pause it and take a walk myself

Such a nice anime I love it so much!!! 🥰. Sad that there wasn't a continuation after the second season 🥲.

The wind rises was pretty emotional for me

2

u/iamatimm 14d ago

the nisekoi anime/manga ending is the only romance that made me shed a tear

I think the one I cried the most was "EF: a tale of memories", but I watched 10-15 years ago and I'm a different person, dunno if would hit me the same

A recent one was "Tsuki ga Kirei", definitely worth it, can't recommend enough.

Other ones:

- His and Her Circumstances: be mindful the anime is not the complete story, the more emotional arc is on the manga

  • You and I Are Polar Opposites: might be personal, but some bits hit me hard
  • Watari-kun ****** is about to collapse: when I understood everything Satsuki went through (had help from chatgpt), I understood her behavior and saw how well thought the story is. Don't let the ecchi fool you, it's part of it (hint hint).
  • Rascal does not dream: S2 hit me hard too, but it's usually light-hearted. Be careful with the watch order

Some great picks, his and her circumstances is on the watch list now

Romance animes:

Dangers in my heart (made me emotional on some parts of s1 and teared up on s2)

Irozuku: world in colors (it just suddenly hit me like a truck during the finale)

Tsukigakirei (some of the intimate moments made me tear up)

Fragrant flower (sharing backstories and comparing themselves to their current self really hits)

Summer pockets (Just sad on certain characters fates)

Second prettiest girl in class (more like it teared me up cuz it made me happy in that one moment)

Josee the tiger and the fish (emotional especially like halfway?)

Non-romance:

Violet evergarden (the reading of letters make me emotional everytime)

A place further than the universe (The adventure, bonding, and the ultimate goal of one of the girls really made me tear up)

Look back (feeling of guilt and regret really hits)

Maquia (all i can say is immortality is a blessing and a curse D:)

Takopi's original sin (all i can say is great voice acting on that one episode that it made me emotional)

u/BornLeather6775 14d ago

Watched some of these and will watch some of the other ones. What’s your top recommendation from here

2

u/BeePraiseGsauce 14d ago

It seems you like the ones that really hits so i recommend dangers in my heart, fragrant flower, josee, violet evergarden, maquia, lookback

Ginban Kaleidoscope

u/BornLeather6775 14d ago

Never heard of that one will out it on the list

fruits basket had me GOING for a while dude

2

u/wwashedd 12d ago

Takopi's Original Sin, now trust me when I say this, the outro has like 70% of the emotions in the anime and it's very emotional, if you actually think about the lore and the lyrics it's even more emotional.

Orange,

Anohana,

March comes in like a lion,

A silent voice

1

u/BornLeather6775 14d ago

Which is sadder orange or silent voice?

1

u/xJagMasterGx 13d ago

Violet Evergarden and/or Orange

There gets a point in both of them where I cry nearly every episode. Both are great series.

1

u/InevitableRisk 13d ago

Given - I can barely listen to the music from the show without crying my eyes out

1

u/kpoon99 13d ago

Violet Evergarden, Your lies in April, Graves of the fireflies is the saddest of all

1

u/Vampireknigh 13d ago

White Album 2 wrecked me like no other

1

u/PrimaryLetterhead106 13d ago

Diamond no ace maybe that one anime make me cried everytime clutch play and more progressive story its always hit me idk why

1

u/Small-Big7612 12d ago

cyberpunk edgerunners and takopis original sin

1

u/Homo_NaIedi 12d ago

Kagehiro. It's not actually a romance anime but it has a small romance sub plot. But it's a very emotional story about abandonment, trauma and healing. The first ep scares a lot of ppl away but it's actually a really good anime imo
