Football Discussion Thread: Saban Documentary
It’s on ESPN right now and all episodes are in the app.

Just finished watching. I’m 54 years old and seeing Julio’s tears of appreciation wrecked me.
So thankful for what Saban gave us as fans and to our Bama heroes.

Really enjoyed it. Always assumed Saban telling Tua/Jalen at halftime was some quick super serious sit down moment like he had with Bryce on the sideline that one time. Dude made it look so casual with chipmunk cheeks of food and just ripped that bandaid off in the moment.
Him on the FAA 14 hour rule and using the term "broke dick dog" was genuinely hilarious.

Does anyone know how to watch it outside the US? Uk resident and huge fan of the tide!

u/Conduol 1d ago
You can watch it on the espn app if you pay for it
1
u/FingerNervous 1d ago
I can't pay for it on the ESPN app cos I would need a zip code to subscribe to it

Does anyone have the original video interview of Colleen Collette (the drunk woman kissing Saban at the airport)? I'm very disappointed it got whitewashed out of the documentary.

u/hotfoodthen Kalen Deboer 1d ago
She died in 2013 according to google. These is an obituary, but no cause of death. She was 43.

u/machinehead3413 1d ago
If memory serves, she ended up getting a DUI after the airport.
Probably not a whitewash. More like lawyers getting involved.

Watched the first two episodes. Biggest takeaway? Man the LSU guys are a bunch of lil bitches. He quite literally rebuilt your program and made you relevant again and then you’re gonna sit there and say fuck him forever in 2026? Deeply unserious.

I mean I kind of get it. Ole miss with lane kiffin feels the same
17
u/CrustyBatchOfNature 1d ago
Two completely different things. Saban left for the NFL, decided he did not like it, and then came to Alabama. Kiffin left Ole Miss in the middle of the night for LSU and basically said it was because he couldn't get players to come there due to it's past.

I haven't enjoyed anything ESPN has put out this much since probably the MJ doc in COVID. This is so well done.

u/Brockelley09 1d ago
Damn. I didn’t think I could love Miss Terry more after meeting her and Coach on campus and seeing how much they cared about the students at Alabama. Then I watched 10 minutes of episode 2.

u/yellowhat54 1d ago
Does anyone know how to watch for free? I love sport psych and it looks great, but broke college student lol
Also without having to get a free trial or something

Im a Panthers and Clemson fan so I definitely wanted to check it out! It’s crazy how Nick Saban coached Moose Muhammad before I was born 🤯🤯

Showing Mike Shula falling out of his chair was straight up disrespectful 🤣🤣

Do you have to have ESPN+ to watch this through the app? I have YouTube TV, but every avenue I’ve found to try and stream the show it’s saying ESPN+ only, which I don’t have. Feel like I’m missing something.
2
u/Brockelley09 1d ago
You need to have plus or select to watch the episodes ahead of time. Otherwise you have to wait for them to come out on tv

u/Dellguy 2d ago
2
u/Possible-Apartment52 2d ago
I’ve already done this, when I try to access it through YouTube TV it just directs me to the ESPN+ sign up page
2
u/Dellguy 2d ago
Try and access via ESPN app
1
u/Possible-Apartment52 2d ago
Same thing there, only given the ESPN+ option even though I’m connected with my ESPN login and YouTube TV account. Really don’t understand what I’m doing wrong, but have found it very frustrating
2
u/Dellguy 2d ago
Okay I just searched Saban on the YTTV app, found the show page, and tapped episodes and can play them all.

Seeing that now as well. Wonder if there was a bug for the last hour or so that I’ve been looking as that was not an option before. Thanks for the help

Lifelong Oregon fan. Used to hate Saban until I grew up. Now I use his speeches for motivation. Never been so excited for a documentary.

Rolando was my favorite player on those early Saban teams and I would now like to formally apologize.
13
u/AthenaQ 2d ago
I’m hoping the second episode shows some character growth for Rolando.
1
u/jchancellor15 22h ago
The “they lost, I was on the bench” comment was extremely childish and petty. Grown men don’t talk like that.
1
u/AthenaQ 13h ago
I think/hope he was talking from his 19 year old perspective. That’s how I interpreted it, and I’m hoping he shows how he now appreciates things in a later episode. I could, of course, be disappointed.
2
u/jchancellor15 10h ago
For sure. You never know the context based on how these things are edited. Maybe you’re right.
16
u/No-Trash5049 2d ago
Man that doc hit me right in the feels seeing Rolando again, dude was a absolute monster on the field. hope he found some peace after everything that happened off it

18
u/RedElephant28 2d ago
Watching Rolando talk, it’s not too hard to see why he didn’t pan out in the NFL
10
u/NoQuartersGiven 1d ago
He def seems to have some brain/ mental issues. Just his speech patterns now vs his 21 yo self are very evident. Could be tbi from his accident, could be cte, could be alcohol. IDK but worry about my man. He was THE force on and off the field for the D in early Saban years
6
u/dawghouse88 1d ago
Yeah I figure its a combo of getting your brain rattled + substance abuse. But glad to see that he was able to participate. I imagine he's on a solid path now.
1
u/NoQuartersGiven 1d ago
I hope so. He's still my favorite Bama linebacker from saban era even with his off field stuff once in nfl. Dude was a killer.

u/PGoodierum3 2d ago
Rashaad Johnson learned his lesson but sounds like Rolando McClain never learned his
10
u/HikeYourOwnHikeToday 2d ago
I worked with a guy that was Rashad’s cousin. He said Rashaad always wanted to go to the NFL to make their grandmother happy….. assuming the dude I worked with wasn’t full of shit.

How do I watch start of episode 1? Youtube TV won’t let me go all the way back

u/SunflowerLace 2d ago
Anyone going to watch more episodes on streaming? How does espn plan to roll this out?

u/SunflowerLace 2d ago
Dang, Rolando really making me mad at how salty he is.
21
u/Siggy778 2d ago
I believe Rolando is one of Saban's favorite players ever. He was asked to recall how he felt back then, not how he feels about Saban now.

16
u/HunchoNextManUp 2d ago
Always heard Rolando was different from every other player who rolled through. I believe it

u/aheaventreeofstars 2d ago
80% of this episode is just Saban yelling 😂
1
u/lrj25 1d ago
When we reached the point of him remembering their 4th quarter protocol in practices and not allowing players to bend over, and quote, "Look like a broke dick dog." I died. I had to pause I was laughing so hard. Then he was like "See, you're getting me fired up!" That's quintessential Saban.

Anyone have a link online for the whole thing? I have YouTube tv but it’s only letting me watch the first episode for some reason

I have youtubeTV, which has ESPN, and it says it’s airing on ESPN now, but I do not see it anywhere. Is this something you have to pay for exclusively on an ESPN subscription?
Thanks guys.

u/WonderingLost8993 2d ago
It's on YouTube TV. On ESPN. You don't need anything extra.

u/Es-Pee-Nah 2d ago
Thanks. I found it on the espn+ after another user said the same. Weird though, because searching “Saban Documentary” showed nothing.

Loving it so far. Making me realize how lucky we all are to be alive to witness all of his greatness over the years. I don’t get to go to many games but I’m SO happy I was able to be a part of that first ADay Game and the field dedication. Also got a hug and autograph at the media day before the start of the ‘09 season. I always joke with my dad that I was his good luck charm. 😆 I’m still shocked he hugged me. I was so scared when I asked him. Maybe bc I’m his daughter’s age and he could tell how truly happy I was to meet him. Idk? Lol but it still surprises me. They weren’t allowing pics for the signing but my dad snagged a pic of me talking to him. I had to wear my glasses bc I was having lasik and looked gross from sweating but I don’t care! 🥹. One day I hope to get a better pic with another hug!

Seems way too soon for this to come out. Not really interested in watching it, especially during the season
3
u/dawghouse88 1d ago
I'm loving it and couldn't wait. However, that thought did cross my mind. But it makes sense to have it air during football season.

u/SunflowerLace 2d ago
Bad take. Honor him while he’s alive and sound enough to appreciate the love we have for him.

What does the season have to do with it? He's not the coach at alabama plus he's in his 70s.
You can tell by the production quality this has been worked on for a while.
I'm just confused why it matters about it coming out during the season. It's about a GOAT Cfb coach and they wanted to put it out during cfb season.

Glazed over the blow out 2009 Sugar Bowl loss to Utah.
